  • The Florida governor and the Board of Education are facing backlash, including from Vice President Kamala Harris, over new guidelines requiring middle school students be taught how slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their “personal benefit.”

    The question I would like to ask is, could enslaved Africans learn the same skills without slavery?
    I put it to you that yes they could. Slavery was a horrible episode in human history that must be told truthfully so that reconciliation with that period of history can happen.

    • @no.6243
      @no.6243 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      No. They couldn't. In fact, learning a skill trade was often added incentive to come to the new world as indentured servants for people of all races, before the first person (a black man) sued to own a person without them having committed a crime. Before the legalization of owning a person without having committed a crime, slavery was of mixed races. Bringing together many cultural exchanges.

    • @skie6282
      @skie6282 ปีที่แล้ว

      @no.6243 slavery is a universal term. It has happened to every race and sadly still does. That is not the point of traching american slavery history as the slaves in Egypt or elsewhere wernt in america... but we do learn a bit about that too. The point of a black perosn owning skaves doesnt matter either. Like saying a black person supports the kkk.. ok well 1 in 100 people are born stupid it doesnt make the kkk right. And finally ues actually any skills slaves in america learned they could have learned without being wipped and hung and tarred and raped. Reading, writing, farming, finance, whatever. Dont remember the irish immigrants being whipped even though they were treated as 3rd rate people.

      Whether they could or couldn’t isn’t the issue. They DID, so it was accurate. Why some people would insist this is a bad thing is beyond me. Blacks still faced plenty of stigma even after being freed from slavery. The fact they possessed skills which they learned during slavery to participate in the economy and society is a triumph. It proves they were not subhuman nor mentally deficient. It proves that slavery was wrong. But some people need to insist that black slaves are basically brain-dead work-zombies who are incapable of anything and only good to be rescued. 🤷🏾‍♂️

      That narrative only exists in your mind. There is an appalling amount of ignorance about the history of slavery. Some even seem to think that it was invented in the Americas by Europeans no less. Or that Europeans just sailed up to the African costs and started snatching people up. The obvious problem being that even the smallest village would outnumber any slavers by many times and breach loading musket isn't really useful when 20 guys are trying to shove a spear up your ass. The weaker villages were raided for slaves alright, by stronger villages. They then sold the captives to Europeans and Arabs. It was quite the money making setup, unless you happened to be one of those weaker villages I suppose.

    just because a slave learned a skill it does not outweighs the horrific status of being a slave. By DeSantis' logic, terrorist learn combat skills and how to operate "electronic devices" despite the fact they killed people for both political and economic gain while hiding behind a religion. People in politics will say anything to white-wash the truth of the matter. I am pretty sure if all the slaves were left to their own devices they would have still learned those supposed skills regardless of being a slave or not.

The mere absence of freedom meant that they could not benefit from any skill they may have aquired as a slave. This take on slavery isnt just revisionist history, it is stark raving maddness. This is the action of a Governor, a legislature and a school administration bureaucracy guided by systemic racism, fear and loathing. The loathing I refer to is a self loathing by all of the aforementioned, based on a lack of empathy and self awareness that is so crippling that they are unable to admit to and acknowledge the mistakes of the past out of the fear that it may in some way implicate them. Not much different and how they are trying to remove actual history. And that technical skills program? They were beat repeatedly in order to do that skill with no pay, the only incentive was not to be beat. I think that's an important part of history.
