Hey DB, love the content! I have a side ques for ya regarding server racks. I currently have a Dell R710 and 720 server I would like to rack mount however I am having issues finding the right one as I recently bought the wrong size and the server did not fit in length and was too long. Was hoping for some help on buying one that would also be good for Unified Network equipment as well going forward? Cheers!
I don't have a lot of experience with different racks... All of mine are relatively shallow like it sounds like you have. I'm currently using a SysRacks setup that is only about 20" deep, but I think they have other options on their site: sysracks.com
What are your drive temps like with your Noctua fans? I have a SuperMicro CSE 847 and use Noctua's industrial 3000rpm fans in my chasis and they make AIR FLOW!!! but the expense of being louder. I was looking at this Noctua fan controller but wanted to see what your temps were like for your hard drives at those fan speeds.
It has been interesting to me from day 1 how at 45Drives there could have been such a massive oversight at launch for what most expect out of a homelab, specifically in terms of cooling and noise. I've built a server and workstation the past year and using anything other than Noctua wasn't even a consideration outside of an AIO for my workstation. It's just a shame at the price point that the Noctua fans will be an even higher upcharge, or you just have to throw away the OEM fans and swap yourself 🤷🏻♂️
While I understand the sentiment it wasn't really an oversight considering the market they were used to. I personally would have preferred a low noise active cooler on the CPU and slower fans but having worked in DC's and with 45drives before this really isn't out of the ordinary for their usual market but is for the homelab market. It will take them some time to learn what the homelab market wants and so long as they end up making a better product I'm OK with that.
And after they sent me this device, they partnered with Noctua so this isn't an issue for anyone else in the future. I covered that in the video. I guess you missed that part.
It's expensive but it definitely isn't trash. There are a number of chassis that can handle 15+ drives but feel free to link one that is available in the US that can take a standard ATX PSU with the same build quality that doesn't cost as much or more.
Couldn’t count how many times troubleshooting something only to discover it was missing power somewhere. 😂 So been there!
Thanks for sharing.
Hey, cool'n'quiet.. wasn't it an Intel brand ? ;-)

Dell makes their own racks of varying U for these servers of course. Those are pretty deep servers. Look for a used one that hasn’t been abused.

looks like my drives are in the low-to-mid 40s

New HL15 setups will come standard with noctua cooling. I talk about that in the video

The HL15 is trash. If you need $200 worth of parts to make it work for you!
