Roy Keane | Testimonial Match Speech | 2006

  • Following his testimonial game with Celtic, Roy Keane received a hero's welcome and surprised everyone, perhaps even himself, by taking the microphone in the centre circle afterwards for an emotional farewell speech.
The attendance at the game was 69,591, a record crowd for a testimonial match in the U.K .
Roy played for Celtic in the first half but ran out for United after the break, to the delight of the United fans. Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs combined to set up Cristiano Ronaldo to score United's winner after 55 minutes.
Keane, who left United that previous December, told the crowd: "This is something I'll remember for the rest of my life."

He was pretty much let go for for criticising the United team at the time, Ironic that he had been doing it is whole career. It's what made us a better team. Many ex players recite how he would encourage them to do better by doing so. When he got to the end of his career he was criticised for it, guess him coming to the end of his peak had more to do with it.
Let's be honest there have been times over the past few years were we could have done with Keano giving some home truths. Pogba would not got away with half of his Bullshit with Keano in that changing room. True Leader and Balls of Steal. Not some Posing wannabe flirting with other clubs.

It was less to do with the end of his peak and more to do with the end of an era.
The league was going all in on being a french clone(and it's oh so close now) and if you're going to copy the french or the spanish or the italians you have to be very weak, very spineless, very cuddlesome, Roy was none of those things and criticizing players without some kind of home office control was the last thing they wanted. Roy represented that more than ANYONE else in the premier league so they swung the hammer and off he went, and you never saw ANY of the other players who would go in on their own lads do it anymore. The sad part is Roy is so jabbed by it I don't think Fergie will ever be able to sit him down and tell him this was why it happened
tl;dr- It was censorship from the league to turn the BPL into a more "welcoming" hand holding, baby league like the rest of them, and it worked

He never treated anyone like trash. Keano's fall was all form the board, Stam? Fergie literally said the board forced him to cut him due to salaries, you name a shite move by United while he was there it was most likely due to the board
People always complainin about the Glazers sayin they've made a right cockup of the club, but the United board has ALAWAYS been a bunch of good for nothings tying the hands of their coaching staff.
