  • @MartinKatscan

    I get the ergonomic reasons for the backwards config, but I'd be nervous doing that.
    The shape of the frame has purposely been designed to evenly distribute downwards weight/force with those angled 'front' legs.
    Other way round, you're kinda 'pulling' the weight towards the straight legs, which would probably increase the risk of 'oopsy synth avalanche'.

    • @GourlieRecords
      @GourlieRecords  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It depends how you load it, I suppose. If you have more shelves than what I’ve configured it probably would be a bit of a tipping risk.
      One of the main reasons I set mine up backwards is because the space it is sitting it. If I had it the normal way then all of my synths and controllers are pretty much up against my wall and window and I wouldn’t be able to close my curtains. I also don’t have my legs angled out as far as they can go but rather just enough to fit. If it would have fit in the space normally I would for sure have put it in the standard way.

    Thanks for the info, I was wondering if it is stable as you installed it 'backward' setup?
    As the weight is not on the angled legs, have you experienced any balancing issues?
    I love the wooden plate idea btw

    • @GourlieRecords
      @GourlieRecords  ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope, no balancing issues whatsoever. This thing doesn't even budge. I tried wiggling it just now and it might as well be screwed to the floor. I am near getting to the point where I could add my third row and depending how I organize it, I might have to turn it around or else the wood shelf ends up sort of shadowed by the row above it in the backwards orientation. This is an unorthodox way to set it up but it ended up working better for my space and allowed me to get the rack 6 inches closer to the wall (which is huge in my small room). Just play around with it and see what works best for you. I will say it's much easier to run the full spectrum of experimentation before you get everything wired up 🙃

    • @GourlieRecords
      @GourlieRecords  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cable management is an art within itself! I always try to balance things being neatly tucked away but also available to access for when I move stuff around. Some of my synths and MIDI controllers I like to move from my rack to my desk. The struggle is real.

    Great Ideas. I had a similar stand in the late 80's. I never thought of reversing it to create more room. My challenge is how to you mount monitor stands so you can hear in front of you when you're playing your keys? I currently use a Roland Juno DS 88 on a single tier stand in the same orientation you're running so that I have more room on my workspace. However, I don't like not having a way to mount monitors on my stand. I have big bulky stands with triangular bases that rip your toes off when you walk by them. Any ideas are helpful. Thanks.

    • @GourlieRecords
      @GourlieRecords  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think they make a mount for these stands for monitors which attach to the vertical poles and flare out to the outside of the stands. Have you looked into those?

    Still rocking the 'backwards' setup? Thinking I might do the same. Any follow-up thoughts after using it a little over a month like this? Any concerns?

    • @GourlieRecords
      @GourlieRecords  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well I'm still only on 2 shelves so there is no need for me to change yet. I can definitely see if I add more that I might want to flip back the normal direction. The other thing about my space is having it in backwards lowers the footprint it sticks out from the wall which lets me slide it in between my desk and wall. The biggest reason that saves space is because the backs of my devices are closer to center of the rack so the wires don't jut out into my curtain from the very back of the rack.
      I also only have 1 large MIDI keyboard and the rest of my setup is MIDI controllers and 4 Behringer synth modules. If I were using this to stack multiple synths with keyboards, I would definitely have it the standard way because the top rows would over shadow the others.

  • @lwpweb

    why not more holder bars instead of the handcraft wood bar? i think to buy this jaspers.

    • @GourlieRecords
      @GourlieRecords  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Price and versatility. I place some pretty small devices on that shelf and if I used bars I would need around 8 more bars. Also my current configuration has a 2x2 grid of Behringer desktop modules stacked which I can only safely do with a solid shelf. The bars are better for holding large instruments.

    How did you build that wooden shelf with the lip to hold the midi controllers? Looking to build one the same for my jasper

    • @GourlieRecords
      @GourlieRecords  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, Chris! It’s actually pretty simple. Just a 1x12” pine plank with 1x2” pine beams screwed into the side of the plank. Just make sure to predrill all your holes before screwing so as not to split your wood. And put in enough screws to hold your load. For my purposes a screw every 5 inches did the trick and I have 5 Behringer Neutron sized synths on my shelf plus a few random things here and there.

    • @GourlieRecords
      @GourlieRecords  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It’s a vintage flag that’s been in my family for 3 generations. It was my great uncle’s and given to him for his service and was at one point flown over a government building in dedication to him. My mom had it packed in a closet for a while so I asked if I could have it. It’s very faded and frayed at the edges, it’s actually pretty cool looking since it has a patina that can only come from years of use. Not really any different than hanging a tapestry except that it has more meaning to me 😉

    If anyone has one of these stands, could you tell me if the back legs can be lifted so I can place them on a step so I can get the stand as far back as possible.
    Nice shelf! But using this backwards makes me feel like it’s going to topple, I’m frightened for your gear 🤣

    • @GourlieRecords
      @GourlieRecords  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I haven't tried to raise the bars through the angle bracket at the top and won't because it requires me to take down my entire setup, BUT it looks like the bracket that holds onto the legs at the top can be loosened just like every other bracket. So unless there's glue in them I don't know about, then you should be able to loosen the top bracket joint and slide the back pole up as high as you need to accommodate your step.
      Also I've tried to do a tip test on my setup and this rack isn't going anywhere with its current load. 😉

      @@GourlieRecords thanks for getting back to me on this, At the moment my synths are on a home made stand and are on pullout shelves, but the runners look like they could go at any moment! I think I’m going to take a punt and order one. The back legs on mine will be secured to the wall by some means. The step in the room serves no purpose at all other than to irritate me :-)
      Thanks again 👍🏼

      So only by messing with the adjustable screw-out feet was I able to get any amount of real stability. I wasn't sure if this was normal.

    • @GourlieRecords
      @GourlieRecords  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fine tuning the cross bar that adjusts how wide your stand sits will also make a big difference. If that is off just a little it will definitely wobble. It's pretty standard for adjustable feet to be the solution to things like this and absolutely worse case a shim, but nobody wants to see a shim under their stand.
      Not all floors are perfectly level. The floors in my house are wild, I call my home slanty because it's a historic home and has no level floors. Anytime I make any furniture for my home I always ensure the feet I use are adjustable 🙃
