You can't compare the regular season results of La Liga to the playoff results of the MLB. You have a playoff system that makes everything more random.
If you check the pennants, which is the logical thing to compare, things are a bit different:
The Yankees have won 41 American league pennants. Second on the list are the Athletics with 15...
In the National League things are a bit better with 4 or 5 dominant teams.
Again, it's totally unfair to compare a playoff. league to a non-playoff one.

I think 14 of the last 16 (2009-2024) winners being inside the top 10 for spend is indicative of its impact. You don’t have to have to be number 1 to win, but 90% of the time you do have to spend more than the bottom 66% of teams. I don’t really think it’s a bad thing, if you want it and are willing to spend money for it that’s fine, but for the teams/owners that are unlikely to be in that top 10 of spend it can be rough as a fan. On the other hand it does make the shots they do get more tense and exciting because they are rare.

The Yankees and Dodgers paid a lot of money for star power and name recognition. Most of those players are still very much in their prime and have all for the most part shown up this post season. What we have learned the last few years is that the hottest teams going into the playoffs tend to have the most success in the playoffs.
Even when the Guardians were clicking on all cylinders earlier this season, they dropped 4 out of 6 games vs the Yankees, the did not match up well against the great competitors this year except for like the Phillies and Orioles.
I have lived in north east Ohio my entire life. The Indians/Guardians are my team, we saw flashes of how great they could be even in game 4 of the ALCS, but our pitching staff was gassed. I hope Vogt learned his lesson and I hope the Guardians make moves to stay competitive next year. Those Yankee bats were just too much this season. Go Dodgers I guess.

I think the pay to win question's main point is being ignored. While yes it is possible for lower payroll teams to occasionally stumble into winning runs and make the world series the main problem is there's no way for small market teams to get some players because a handful of teams can easily out bid them and not really think twice about it because they have 2-3 times the revenue (or more).
This is nothing against any big market team. There's no rules being broken. There's nothing wrong with using whatever resources you have available to improve your team in whatever way you can when you aren't cheating or breaking established rules. I think a better way to think about this topic would be to add this question: Could the MLB balance out the talent and create a more competitive league across the board by establishing payroll rules that would keep small numbers of teams from hoarding a large portion of the talent? As someone who's a fan of the sport as a whole seeing more super stars go to different and unique places is very appealing.

It's telling that while 7 MLB teams still have not sold their jerseys and identities out to advertisers, not a single one of them made it to the playoffs this year. I prefer seeing a team that has never made it like Seattle or a team that has not won it in a long time like Cleveland. I did like it when teams like the Pirates and Reds had a team of great players that were the same players to make it in the 70's. As a Padres fan I used to look forward to teams like the Big Red Machine would come to town and Pitsburgh and Cincinnati are technically a small market teams and I would hate it if they would not ever have a chance to get back to the World Series because of payroll.

The part of the equation that’s missing here is consistent access to the playoffs. By Jimmy’s metrics until a couple days ago Cleveland was the more successful franchise for the last 14 years because they made one World Series and the Yankees made zero. But in reality that doesn’t take into account the fact that in 10 of those 13 years the Yankees made the playoffs and Cleveland only made it in 6. What if they’d been able to keep Lindor, Brantley, Cliff Lee and the Yankees couldn’t acquire Cole, Stanton, Soto, etc? Who would have had more bites at the apple then? But worse still… the Jacoby deal. That would have sunk Cleveland as a franchise. New York got to move on. And this is one of the most successful small market teams too.
Yes Cleveland was on that list in 90s and the Padres have been on that list in recent years… the difference is that they couldn’t sustain the spending for more than a couple years. The Yankees don’t have to make that choice. They would never have to let a player like Lindor go.

Presenting an argument on buying your way into the world series not really being a thing, when evidence within the video itself points to it happening (17 of last 32 WS in top 5 payroll, 5 of the last 7 WS featuring at least 2 top 10 payroll teams, etc) is pretty bad faith. If anything, it shows recent years trending toward paying to get there as we get deeper into this statistical analysis era of baseball favoring teams with deeper pockets. I'm happy for you and your Yankees, and I'll be rooting for them against the Dodgers, but I don't think we should be pretending that money doesn't buy world series.
Also, presenting Dodgers as 5th in payroll is also pretty bad faith when you know they have over $900m deferred over at least 4 players. It's technically true on paper, but no one is really fooled here.
