Archie is spot on today. I love Seiko's but, he's right.
You buy a Rolex when you want to be somebody. You buy a Grand Seiko when you are somebody.

Archie, that's the beauty of the Seiko. Sometimes under the radar is the way to go. I often wear mine during
"forced family/relative dinners" you know those type of people you only see once a year. Anyway, they like comparing success in a shallow manner ie: asking what car you drive and if you have a watch ask what brand it is. So during those occasions I wear the Seiko, and they have no f*cking clue how out goosed they are. So yeah understatement is sometimes better just take a look at your Reverso.

snobbery more important than quality - ? The Grand Seiko is more innovative, more accurate, at least as well built and cheaper than a rolex. Its smooth, its solid, its gorgeous, its silent. but hey its a Seiko.... they prob don't want you as a client anyway - - -

I swear to god. I love all watches but when I see people on the train to work stair at my daytona I feel all weird. Its that feeling knowing someone thinks you are a rich fuck even that thats couldnt be farther from the truth. NOW my grand seiko high beat is a god damn joy and winner! People dont have a damn clue so you dont have that pretentious bullshit to deal with. The quality is unreal. It is so good that I have not seen on swiss watch keep time like this thing does. +1 second for DAYS...days on end it just doesnt deviate! I also bought it for 3500 almost brand new with full warranty. If i want ill sell it for 2500 to get rid of it quicjly and its the same 1k I would lose on any rolex.

I wish Archie would review a Grand Seiko Spring Drive. Archie, in this video, talks about having to send a GS back to Japan the way you have to send a Rolex back to Switzerland. My guess is that since the GS Spring Drive models do NOT have an escapement or battery, sending them back to the factory would be rarely necessary. But I haven't heard Archie talk about technical details much, so maybe such is out of his area of expertise.
That's why Lexus is the most reliable car you can buy - 100% made in Japan.

seiko makes machinery for those "swiss made" production lines
Sure Seiko makes a lot of their watches in Malaysia and China. But the quality control at their facilities is so good that there is no difference between the same Seiko made in China and the same one made in Japan.

wrong. JDM seiko 5, for example, has 24 jewels compared to 21 jewels on malayesia seiko5. there is also a difference in the fit and finish of the bracelets, indices, lume dots on dial etc

Someone needs to send Archie their Grand Seiko so he can hold it and wear it a few days and then make a video giving an Honest opinion on what he thinks about the quality. Either the Spring Drive (with the gorgeous continuous sweep) or a Hi-beat will suffice. No Divers... I'm starting to consider sending mine to him just for an honest review, I am just worried he may treat it like shit and not bother returning it lol. Maybe someone whom he knows and respects can send one in.

Seiko looks like a seiko, is a seiko. To me its a hundred dollar watch that looks almost as good as the grand seiko. So yea it does not impress anyone ! its just a good watch.
What does impress you? Rolex, Patek, Ap? Very few people are impressed by anything you might wear on your wrist, other than to think of you as a fool for spending so much money on a watch. The only people impressed by whatever you wear are probably other watch lovers, and there are plenty out there who are impressed by Seiko. Few people who know about watches would be impressed by that 10-15 year old Rolex explorer Archie is wearing when put side by side with a GS hi Beat.

I am about to buy my first Grand Seiko, hopefully by the end of January. The two models I have worn have to be two of the finest watches I have had the pleasure of putting on my wrist: meticulous attention to detail, comfort, subtle and understated elegance, they are fantastic watches. It makes the price of a GS feel like value compared to other brands.
Is it a better buy because you buy based on resale and not because you love the watch?
I guess if you can’t afford the high end watches you like then you buy what will resale the best.

I would never get one. I will admit they are good watches with outstanding quality etc. But it is the same as buying a Toyota for 100000$. A watch has to be made in Switzerland.

Rolex for me! Actually Rolexes but who's counting?!? There are diminishing returns in most all fashion and it comes down to the image one wants to project.
I get the snobbery thing. I just bought a Grand Seiko recently for $4,100 and it's a beautiful piece. Still, people see "Seiko" on the dial and they assume it's an $80 watch. If the Japanese really wanted to sell these here in the States they would need to come up with a separate brand like Toyota did with Lexus. That, and perhaps actually market them...
Grand Seiko, spend $6,000 for a watch that looks EXACTLY like one from JC Penny's clearance rack that sells for $80, only thing worse is a Quartz owned by a Jetta driver.

jaime pereira I think a Rolex Datejust looks like the classic Oyster that RWC developed long before Grand Seiko. The only contemporary to the Oyster design would have been the Harwood which in some ways was more innovative in its bezel set feature similar to the Sky Dweller ring command, plus self wind. If you are buying a watch simply because it looks like a Rolex then buy an invicta, alpha or some other garbage watch. Seiko failed to differentiate the Grand Seiko as a luxury watch, both by its branding and style. Outside of Tokyo it fails to impress.

Archie I hate you but I can't deny a few of the things you said, by watching that video I realised that it's just correct that a fuckin watch is just for the fuckin snobbery. It sounded hard and sick when you screamed it but hey, you know what, it's a big truth! The Seiko is more accurate? well the most accurate is your mobile phone! the Seiko is cheaper too? well, yeah, that's actually exactly the problem in a way!
I would buy a Seiko Astron any day, just as I would buy a Citizen Satellite Wave as well but the watch I bought as a piece of JEWELLERY had to be a Swiss one, in my case an Omega Seamaster Aqua terra 21.5mm in blue, which many love and many hate but it was the Jewelry watch that touched me personally.
I have a Seiko sarbo35 . JDM . I really like mine .

Hi. Japan really showed (and got angry) the world (that'd be the Swiss and Germans) the equivalent of a master swordsmith that makes masterpiece katanas (the world best sword in history says sword people). It's a katana masterpiece in watch form.
Also the japanese beef is the Rolls Royce of beefs, the wagyu.

Grand seiko are not made in China they're a 100% made Japan..
the top line of seiko i think is not GS is Credor...
GS watches are absolutely amazing...the Japanese essentially fixed the main issue with long term mechanical watch accuracy with the Spring Drive...yeah it has some electronics in it but the watch is powered mechanically. My favorite is the SBGE001 GMT with the beautiful Sapphire Bezel with luminous GMT numerals.
The biggest problem with GS is not the watch its the marketing...but at the same time its a WIS' watch so its an absolutely amazing piece the can be flashy but still fly under the radar.

The seconds hand has no pause in its movement...it has a smooth sweeping motion.
Spring drive is amazing technology, not sure where your coming from with all the negativity towards the movement. It has a 72hr minimum power reserve with a single barrel because the movement is efficient and in most cases its automatic winding. The mechanism in the movement move in one direction which might minimize wear on the parts. It continuously regulates its self based on a internal precision reference....how on earth could this be anything but a step fwd.
I do agree the kinetic watches do suck...the solar tech is definitely better but the spring drive is very solid...speaking from experience...
Not sure I agree with your assessment. The SD watch I owned had a pretty nice looking movement and I never had issues. It was by far the most accurate watch I owned and it looked great. Some of the SD watches can be serviced in the USA but other do need to go back to Japan (I would always recommend sending an SD watch to Japan for service...). Never heard of Seiko not being able to service an SD watches. Considering all moving parts move in one direction in a SD watch I find it hard to believe that it would be anything but more reliable than most std mechanical movements.
Are the SD watches expensive...sure they are but its great technology and does work. If you want a watch that is quartz accurate but never needs a battery then this is it.
BTW, I do agree with you the Kinetics do suck though the one I have had for years still works very reliably even with the original capacitor.
+Arthur Serino Spring drive is part of the Grand Seiko line. Parts will be there for a long time. Did you know that Omega (I own a Speedmaster, not the Motm ) only guarantee parts for 20 years. It's written on there web site.

Omega and Grand Seiko start at 6 thousand US. It's the beginning of fine jewelry. Mid tear. Those 60-200$ citizen your talking about is besides the point. There all watch and know jewelery value. I hope you understand the difference.

The cheap mass marketed China made junk Seikos have killed the brand for me. I will never give a rats ass about Seiko. Just don't care about them.
The higher end Grand Seikos and even a lot of their regular JDM watches are made in Japan.
