  • How to steer a car correctly. Learning how to control the steering wheel when you first start learning to drive is very important and being able to steer the car correctly will help you to control the car around corners and will give you confidence in your driving skills.
    We will be using the 10 to 2 method of steering the steering wheel, some people call it the pull and push method.
    I will show you a demonstration at the start of how to steer the steering wheel correctly using the 10 to 2 method. Then I will be driving around with the camera pointing at the steering wheel. I will cover turn left and right and also emerging left and right. #steering

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I agree with some of the comments here - with modern cars that have power steering, hand-to-hand is an antiquated technique. And moving the steering wheel back after turning is redundant - the steering wheel will come back on it's own - just open your fingers and let it recover, and then make adjustments in steering. As the suggested video on the right - this is a technique you should un-learn after you get your licence. Unfortunately, you need to know it and do it to pass the test. All the best, Cheers Rick

      Zurkster it might work for you but you probably are a hazard to everybody else on the road which causes accidents for other people. The amount of times I see people who feed the wheel over break at junctions causing people driving at the speed to limit to break hard just so they can turn the corner it’s dangerous as well as indicating late. So although you might not think you’re doing any wrong for it but that person who’s had to break hard behind you could have been shunted by someone else.

      @@elpatron3446 We see some pretty awful stuff on these threads, but that one just takes the biscuit. If drivers have to brake on approach to a turn, it's because they're going to fast. What's that got to do with the way they turn the wheel, for God's sake?

    Hey you are a god send!!!!!
    Steering is one of those things that as I've gone further in to my lessons I've lost the ability to do correctly, my instructor explains, by saying don't cross your arms and it's not a white knuckle ride , but still couldn't work out what and how I was meant to be doing it ( temporarily dippy moment)
    This video explained and showed me everything I needed to know, it was a dahdahhhhhh moment.

    Some people have alleged this is a dangerous steering technique, nonsense. The government would not permit anything intrinsically dangerous on driving tests. Many years ago faults on the driving test included CAT and CAB for steering. This was crossing hands at top and bottom respectively. No longer the case steering faults are now outcome based. The system is tricky to master extremely effective for general road use but totally not cool. Emergency manoeuvres have been mention as a weak point not sure if that is true, not had one in past twenty years, but the best system in an emergency is "the emergency stop". Stopping in a straight line is preferred prior to considering swerving. I remember seeing a video of an uninjured guy whose car was on its roof who said "I swerved to avoid hitting a squirrel". My advice is that if you can master it use this very safe system. Travis has put out a lot of good information on driving why would he wrong on steering? If there is a superior system nobody has described what it is.

      Hi, this is one of those questions where a lot depends on if you are crossing your hands a lot and is crossing your hands considered to be a safety to you and those around you. It will start as a minor fault depending on the situation. But if you swerve and this is a result from crossing your hands, then a serious fault.

    How many times the wheel should be turn for a good turn

    • @JamesTravis
      @JamesTravis  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Westley Walker A lot would depend on the turn. Some are tight turns and some are wide long turns. The best advise would be to try a left turn in first gear. Don't look at the wheel, look at where you want the car to go and follow it. Then repeat it. Once you start to get used to the turns, then use 2 nd gear.
