When I was in the SCA when we would be out in public in very medieval clothing we would get a lot of the "Are you in a play?" question. The standard response would be to deadpan back "Yes. Cats."

Honestly, not caring about what people think about what you wear is so freeing. I love 30s and 40s neutral tone fashion but also gaudy tacky bold-colored 80s and 90s patterns. For a while, I was conflicted because I was afraid the major contrast between the styles would make people think I was crazy or weird, but then I learned to not care. If I want to wear a tan below-the-knee a-line dress today and tomorrow wear ripped mom jeans and a neon abstract collared shirt, I will.

I've made myself a nice walking skirt, and I find that it blends better into my cross-gender wardrobe when I take liberties with the fabric itself.

A lot of it is expensive and highly collectible now, but you can still find blouses and skirts for not too much from time to time online.

I've been trying to find a sewing pattern for an Edwardian blouse. I think it would look great with skinny jeans to add a bit of floof and drama. I've made an Edwardian skirt (ten panels that go into a slight point at the top of the back) and wear it with a tshirt. I wore it to visit Highclere Castle and felt like a Disney princess as I swept down the stairs. No one else noticed but it felt so damn good!

No influencer recommendations but a style: My favorite favorite favorite era of clothing is the Teddy Boy fashion in the 1950s. London teenagers (mostly boys but there were some girls as well) would take Edwardian cloths (aka Edwardian "Teddy" Boys) and cuff the pants, add colorful socks, wear creepers (a brand of shoe that became popular I believe in WWII which then in the 1990s became popular once more) and then adorn the outfits with velvet bows or ties (and you can't forget the slicked back Elvis hair!). It's really cool because it looks modern because it's just a suit but when adorned with the accessories and hair it really just adds to the ensemble. (also The Beatles were Teddy Boys before they became famous in the 60s and turned to Modern "Mod" fashion)

However, I would be so happy if you could one day make a video about men's fashion as this is so rarely talked about and I can't be the only guy who enjoys vintage styles. (No worries, if that's not something you'd ever do. You're amazing)

Loved this! I did this in the 1980's in high school, the Belle Epoque revival was big then too, as was early Frontier (carried over from the late 70's with Little House on the Prairie, The Waltons, etc). Lacey blouses, long tiered skirts, and granny or western boots, depending on the era you wanted to channel. Even in the mid 1990's the Victorian revival was amazing, with lots of velvet, buttoned frock coats, killer boots, and big hair. Thank you for posting this video, it brought back so many great fashion memories, and inspired me to incorporate Belle Epoque back into my wardrobe again! Hugs from Toronto, Canada! XOXOXO

I find your approach to evoking an era so refreshing! I'm in awe of the talent and dedication some vintage fans show in perfect duplication of historical costume. But I've noticed there is sometimes a slight snobbishness about total accuracy. I'd much rather incorporate my favourite vintage details, like lace, skirt shapes, high necks and bishop sleeves into my own personal style! Your vintage philosophy is v refreshing 💃

I did a Gibson tuck for my wedding hair!! Made the 3/4 sleeve lace dress seem appropriately vintage but still modern enough to not be costumey. I'm gonna have to try the others though, that Lazy Gibson Girl hair is super fun.

Thank you, not just for the information in the video but for your thoughts on doing your own thing and dressing in a way that makes you happy.
I often dress in very Victorian/Edwardian style clothing when not working. Being immersed in those eras is a relaxing and cathartic form of therapy against this overly-modern and interconnected world of ours. Inasmuch, I'm nearly as used to the occasional critic (who is usually someone guilty of sartorial blasphemy themselves) as I am the people who comment positively on the look. Keep up the good work, young miss.

I'm a mature woman that has been history bounding her whole life. It just didn't have a name back in the day. I was just that weird girl in the 80's wearing victorian Folkwear patterns that I sewed on a treadle machine. I absolutely love you and keep making great videos!

I've found my stile, that's been very 40's-50's for years, to start to get inspired by edwardian in either a "feminine modern princess" style, or "femme dandy let's make Oscar Wilde proud" style. So this video was a welcome inspiration for me ^^ And the words "I don't give a fluff" should be printed on tote bags and pins.

I have stopped feeling silly about mixing up the decades/centuries. My favorite outfit is a lace and silk white Edwardian blouse from 1890 with a neon scarf, high waisted jeans, and lace up tan leather knee-high boots. People compliment it almost everywhere I go so that gave me confidence to try other pairings.

All of these hairstyles are super beautiful, most excellent execution! Especially the front of that braid, such lovely balance of floof and swoopy curl, very A Room With a View. It's quite nice that one can kinda just pile some curls around and get a very romantic and quite accurate look with this era. American Duchess make wonderful Edwardian shoes for any non-boot occasions, though really, boots are for all occasions as you say :)

    Two More Tips to consider for a Edwardian look;
    1) Wear a simple cotton petticoat under whatever skirt you own. It helps to balance out the look of the skirt by preventing your legs or bum clinging to the actual skirt fabric. If you look back at old photos a key aspect is that the skirt itself creates something of a "mystery" by not adhering to the body passed the waistline. It seems like it's an object unto itself that doesn't really hint at the wearer's body shape. No matter what your skirt's hem is, this simple under layer really helps to ensure, even if your skirt is very modern, that the fabric "sits" right on your body from a historical perspective. A cotton petticoat is really just a tube of fabric that cinches in at the waist enough not to fall off; no matter what sewing methods you choose it makes for a good beginner's project if you don't want to buy one (it's a great project because no one will see it so no one will know if you're stitches are messed up).
    2) Cover bare legs with socks or tights. If you are going with a skirt not to the ankle, wearing socks or tights to hide the flesh of your leg really helps. Edwardians and Victorians had a lot of hang-ups with human anatomy and creating an outfit that "acknowledges" those phobias helps give it a more historical vibe. I also notice they were scared of collar bones, thought wrists were a bit iffy and were terrified by knees. KNEES! Oh what has the world come to?! Somehow they had less problems with areas that were more "fleshy" or rounded and less boney / veiny. My theory is that science was a real curiosity at the time, but people still wanted to imagine themselves as being slightly separated from the natural world.

Did my hair up with the bun and curls. Got lots of compliments and dates!

I remember going to the Gunne Sax outlet store back in the 80s in SF to shop for all of those pretty lace tops! Had such a good time rummaging through the bins of factory "rejects" and finding gold! I found some great stuff for super cheap, like $2-$5, and if something was wrong with it, I grew up with a seamstress grandmother that taught me sewing, so I could fix just about anything. And the "dressing room" was just one big room with no individual stalls for privacy; it was literally a portion of the factory that was reserved for us bargain shoppers. So here we all were in our under clothes trying on all of these garments in front of each other, but I didn't care, I wanted those clothes 😊😄😆 You carry this look very gracefully and elegantly, it really suits you. 😊

Late to the party, but between you, Ms. Banner, Ms. Donner, and everyone else in the CosTuber community, I’ve leaned in hard in “I don’t give a fluff.” Edwardian vibing... a little, sort of... but with modern fabrics. Floor length black wrappers with yoga trousers under them for warmth in Nebraska winters, over black bodysuit leotards for scoop neckline, topped with close-fitting vests that give a silhouette like a corset would, hair bound up and pinned into a beret... choice bits and bobs of my handmade jewelry, plus makeup... and a black wool cape. Every where I go, I get appreciative looks and questions, and I feel great and like my most authentic self.

I have always liked the Victorian/Edwardian look, too. While I was in College, I used to wear a blouse like the one you wore in the video, and a calf-length skirt. People asked me if I was studying Theatre, and I would say, "No, I just like this style." After the other students got used to the way I dressed, no one bothered me. Today, though, I'm more into the 40s look. Now folks say, "Hey! You look like Rosie the Riveter!" Yup, that's the last time I wear that head scarf turban-style! Kidding! I like putting my hair up in the 40s turban style when I'm grocery shopping, and my hair's a mess, and when I'm at home vacuuming. Sorta keeps my hair from getting into my eyes. LOL! You looked so cute in all of your Edwardian outfits! My hair is growing longer, since I can't get to my hairdresser because of Covid! I liked the way you curled your hair, so I copied you. (God, that sounds creepy!) Stay safe, and take care, Rachel!
