    I’ll often say “late Victorian and Edwardian”, because that’s where my personal style lies. From 1890-1910. But I do try to differentiate between the two.

    "The Age of Innocence" with Winona Ryder, Michelle Pfieffer, and Daniel Day-Lewis, and "Tess of the d'Urbervilles" with Gemma Arterton and Eddie Redmayne, are set in the 1880s and the costuming is superb.

    Loved this! I always get the impression Edwardian often gets conflated with Victorian...
    Personally I prefer Edwardian - spiced up with some details from the late Victorian age (I loved the costumes from Crimson Peak, though - not 100% historically accurate, I know).

    Aesthetically I like 1890s and 1900s styles more then previous decades but if I were to take up history bounding I'd have to shorten skirts and lower necklines because I hate wearing tights clothes round my neck.
    I was looking for the waistcoat pattern Costuming drama used on Black Snail Patterns website and got a bit confused that they only have an Edwardian section, which includes a lot of Victorian era patterns, rather than calling it Victorian, a more commonly known period.
    And I agree, a video focussing on the aesthetic/artistic dress movement would be great!

    Dead Still is set in the 1880s, though I don't know how accurate it is. I like how Nancy's dress reuses the same parts with her accessories changing (at least at the beginning) instead of having her have a different outfit every episode. Ripper Street is set in 1889 at the beginning, but again, I don't know how accurate it is.

    Can you do the same. Comparison with the Georgian period !? What would. Have been the Canadian/American equivalents?
    .and yes interested in a second video for 1890s that makes you so excited 🌞
    I always follow European time periods/era. Not sure if it because I am born Canadian.. my European ancestry or popular media.
    So romantic era and Regency era was in essence apart of the later Georgian era ?
    You did a fantastic job by the way !!! I wish I could dress like this every day...without being made fun of lol

    Was the early part of the Anne Of Green Gables series set in the 1880’s??? I could be wrong, but I think when it begins, the women are dressed like that? Quite formidable but then softening quite quickly as the story progresses…perhaps the late 1880’s??? 🤷‍♀️😊

    Here's some classic Australian movies set in the Victorian and Edwardian eras. I haven't seen them in a very long time so I can't promise that the scripts have aged well. Some of the costumes from these movies are great though.
    1880s - The Man From Snowy River (1982) -> based on the 1890 poem
    Seven Little Australians (1973) -> based on the 1894 novel
    1890s - My Brilliant Career (1979) -> based on the 1901 novel
    The Getting of Wisdom (1977) -> based on the 1910 novel

    I love how you leave what others would cut, way more fun to watch :)
    Also I keep waiting for someone to mention Murdoch Mysteries, but it's Canadian so nobody's ever heard of it... My uneducated eye says the costuming is often beautiful even if they bash corsets now and then (which, you know, I bash bras all the time, so....) although I'm pretty sure that I once spotted where someone was hiding a zipper...

    Yes tell me more about these fashion moments.
    I MUST KNOW!
    EDIT: So in my browsing of the internet Ive found that a majority of what people think of as Victorian is actually Edwardian. Victorian - like boho, hippie, g*psy, retro and vintage - I think, is a buzzword now. Its not so much about actually defining and identifying things that span the actual Victorian period, but its about appearing as such. Much of what I used to think of as Victorian is actually Edwardian because of inaccurate labeling.

  • @WillNelson73

    Many Americans use the term "Victorian" as a catch all for clothing over 100 years old, but often they really are referring to Edwardian

  • @reenabearkitty

    I ran into this video because I honestly cannot tell the difference between Victorian and Edwardian fashion. I am a big Titanic nerd and I know the ladies of the time wore Edwardian outfits. I am considering getting an Edwardian outfit but honestly there's a dearth of period clothing online that is affordable 😅😅 It's not that important in the grand scheme of things considering that I'd rather be comfortable for work and play, but I was just curious. thanks for this informative video :D

    Bram Stoker's Dracula film in 1992, is set in the late 1880's. If not, 1885 or 1886 to be exact! Before, other films have done more in the 1890's setting.
    Of you wonder more into Opera Theatre to any Theatre, as you may know, La Traviatta is done in the late 1850's to 1860's frequently, and Madame Butterfly in the early 1990's because that's when Puccini compose it. These are a few examples. Tosca is quite awesome, because it's either done in the mid Recency era or the late 1870's. Going to play productions, The Matchmaker or a.k.a. Hello Dolly is actually set in the mid to late 1880's.
    So, here are some histrionic style esthetics.

    I think the BBC series North and South was set on the 1850s (I know the book was published around that time so I'm guessing). I love the costume on that show, but don't know how historically accurate it is! This inspired me to do some research!! =)

    • @pipers_river
      @pipers_river 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I love the 2004 BBC North & South!! In the show (and in the book) the characters visit the Great Exhibition of 1851 in London - a World Fair also known as "The Crystal Palace Exhibition". So the time period for the story is roughly 1849-1852, as there are a couple of flashbacks. The costumes from the show are really very historically appropriate for these years.
      I love the costumes in this show! Especially Margaret's outfits. But I am very partial to Fanny's chequered dress (with its many petticoats).

      I always find it confusing in the adaptations because they seem to push the action forward for some reason... Can't remember if any dates were mentioned in the books until the last one. Anne's youngest child was 15 in 1914 when all her 5 brothers and sisters were older and able o join the war efforts. And I think Anne was 24 when she and Gilbert got married. We can deduce Anne was around 50 yrs old during WW1, by that reasoning the first book takes place in the late 70s, early 80s.

    I have a feeling that the techniques for putting a gown together did not change that much from the Victorian to the Edwardian period, even though the styles did change. I have a suspicion that working class women did not change the cut of their gowns every decade, the way upper class women did, as she was more inclined to look neat and be comfortable, and she may have had one special gown for Sunday, or Shabbat.
