    Loved this! As the daughter of a Chinese father and Taiwanese mother, I think this accurately depicts all the language-related confusion I had growing up. Not only did I have to get used to understanding and speaking with two different accents (depending on which side of the family I was talking to), I always scrambled word choices like 馬鈴薯/土豆, 番茄/西红柿, "lājī"/"ㄌㄜㄙㄜ". This was hilarious!

      中国大陆也不是都叫土豆。土豆是普通话。北方有地方叫地瓜,上海叫洋山芋。番茄也是,比如我在上海就听到上海人叫它番茄和西红柿的都有。

    I love how - without even noticing maybe - our whole body, tone, speed change when we switch languages. I guess, English would be my second language and It kinda gives me a whole other personality. I love how you both start a bit shy but then something clicks and you get a new dynamic. I LOVE IT! ☺️☺️☺️❤️❤️❤️

Also it’s clear Miki’s mandarin has the Taiwanese accent influence while Kevin’s mandarin has the mainlanders rolling of his tongue (even tho Shanghainese don’t roll their tongue as much as the northerners). Both of your parents would be proud of your Chinese. Make sure you pass that down to the next generation.

    Really intriguing to see how the language that we use in our daily communication affects how we structure the way we speak for other languages. For example, at 0:22 when Kevin said 我爸爸妈妈也说中文在家里 which translate to my parents speak Mandarin at home which is how one would deliver the sentence grammatically in English. However, in Mandarin, it will usually be phrased as 我爸爸妈妈在家里都说中文. Personally, I face this issue a lot when I converse in English where in my head it feels like I am translating my thoughts in another language to English and usually the grammar comes out weird.

    I pay attention to the small details a lot when it comes to people speaking, and I can tell when someone is from Taiwan because they all have that distinguishing accent when they speak Mandarin. It's hard to explain, but when Taiwanese people speak Mandarin, they all have that 嗲聲嗲氣 type of feeling. Because Chinese is a tonal language, it's very noticeable for me to tell when their tones are all off. Something I used to notice when I took college classes back then was that Taiwanese when speak "吃 (Chī) (eat)" is always saying it like "ci," as in their tongue is flat when they're pronouncing the word "eat" in Chinese. But it's supposed to be a curl tongue tone when you're saying "eat" in Chinese. It's the same with "speak" in Chinese too. Taiwanese people always say it as "suo," but it's supposed to be "shuo," as in curling tongue tone.

    • @chriswang8343
      @chriswang8343 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      yea we are very lazy when it comes curling our tongues, and I guess there is more flow and connection between the pronunciations, so there is a stereotype that we mumble our speech. Another difference is adding meaningless sounds like (哦)"oh" and "(啊)ah" after a sentence like: 是啊(yes). or like if we agree to someone's argument or statement it will sound something like 哦哦哦對啊. There are differences in vocabulary usages between those living in China and Taiwan. For example, Chinese call subway 地鐵(de tie) and in Taiwan majority people call subway 捷運(jie yun)。We also speak slower compared to other provinces in China.
