you should try doing this (its what i do and its super fun)
BOTH TEAMS: Gold shroom, single shroom, Boo, Star, Bullet
RED TEAM EXCLUSIVE: Shock, Blue Shell, Crazy 8
BLUE TEAM EXCLUSIVE: Boomerang Flower, Triple Shrooms, Piranha Plant (and sometimes i add coins to this team)
I play on red team but you can play on whichever one you want
edit*: you can switch these items around teams as much as you want
Something interesting you missed is that Boo actually beats lightning. Because you get invincibility and you also get to steal the other team's shocks
It only steals from people infront so you just get a mushroom

I just tested this out. When I gave my team Lightning and the other team Boo, my team easily wiped the floor with the other. My team still had an equally sweeping victory when we used the Boo and the other had Lightning lmao
I think in this case, if the human player is smart with the first item use, their team can pull ahead for the entire race no matter which item distribution there is.

If this was online, for the shock only item team, the OP strategy would be for one player to accept last place but constantly spamming items while on a double box the whole race, making their entire team get top 5

1:44 The reason for that is because MK8 has a skidding state, where your tires don’t grip the ground and you move forward slowly. This can happen when you hold brake and accelerate at the same time, when you try to accelerate immediately after going into reverse, or if you fail to get a boost from attempting a rocket start (you can even see your tires skid in place before you are released). When you hop, it cancels the skid, causing you to land and accelerate like normal. Using an invincibility star maxes out your acceleration, so you end up shooting forward.

It's crazy how Nintendo managed to give Mario Kart 8 such extraordinary longevity. And even forgetting about the 48 new tracks, this one simple update alone is probably going to extend the game life for a lot of people by 100 hours or more. This game didn't have any challenges I would consider extreme or impossible.....until now.

Here’s my list of challenges you could try in the all-blue-shells tourney (again, I posted this in your last video too)
1. Win without throwing any blue shells
2. Win without getting targeted and hit by a blue shell
3. Complete a race while having 10 coins
4. Win without getting targeted by a blue shell at all (this includes if it’s hovering towards you, so no outrunning)
5. Win without getting hit by a blue shell (like at all)
Once again, I ranked them by (assumed) difficulty
An idea for a team race is to have one team be "chasers" and the other be "runners". The chasers have red shell, red shell, piranha plant and blue shell. The runners have mushroom, triple mushroom and golden mushroom. In theory what would end up happening is it plays as one team trying to run ahead and the other trying to bring them down.
that's already cops and thieves in the regular battle courses of MK8 Deluxe

Love the video Troy! ⚡ Last night, my friend and I played a few GPs of "Item Draft" versus. We took turns drafting items and battled it out. I picked second, and that is a MAJOR disadvantage in this mode. Because the coin will always be the last item picked, and it is so common in first place, it takes out most significant items you can take. My friend took all the shells and such and I was getting rekt in top spots. My blue team ended up having a ten point lead going into the last race, but his team target shocks us on Mushroom Gorge Lap 3 (shock was his 1st overall)... I get first, but my entire team finishes 7-11, for a 32 point swing in his favor. It was super fun, would love to see you try an Item Draft versus video! 💙

Hey Troy, just so you know, you can get a crazy 8 of only stars and only red shells like you said, it just doesn’t work with items like the blooper or if it fills in with a mushroom.
Yeah, it works with every item except bloopers. I think the coins and mushrooms with the bloopers might be a bug

My brother and i did only blue shells and triple reds! On Baby Park it was super chaotic and fun!
Also i loved the backwards aspect to Peach's Garden, that was a super fun update!
Hey Troy! Watching your videos has led me to find a very strong interest in Mario Kart Wii and 8 Deluxe throughout pretty much the entirety of 2022. This year for Christmas, I asked my dad if he would get me a Nintendo Switch Lite (The Pokemon Sword and Shield one) and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. I wanted a switch lite mainly for the convenience of being able to lay on the couch and play it kind of like how I would with a phone, except with buttons instead of fully touch controls and to enjoy some of the newer-released games. The Nintendo Switch Lite will be here right around Christmas (maybe a few days after) and I'm so happy that I'll be able to enjoy some Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Oh, and he was nice enough to even get me Animal Crossing: New Horizons as well :)

I got so nervous that you would be kicked everytime you stopped to bag for items, until I realized you can't get kicked in an offline match.
The reason why you cant do only crazy eight is because crazy eight actually just picks random items like from item boxes so if it would allow you to do only crazy eight and you got one, it would crash the game(its hardcoded so you cant get a crazy eight as a crazy eight item)
I honestly thought Blooper+Crazy 8 was going to give 8 Bloopers because in MK7 Shells Only, the Lucky 7 gave 7 Red Shells.
Even if it still seems like a Wii U Port to me, the fact customization of the Item Roulette is a thing, makes it more to a Mario Kart 9 honestly than just a straight port with few changes.
I legit tried one team only having bullets and another team with other items trying to see if a combination of items could beat bullets. Closest I got was the Boo as the bullets are to overwhelming but it was a nice experiment

The reason for crazy 8 only not working is probably due to it requiring items in its item meaning it would just be nothing if it was just the crazy 8. If no items other than crazy 8 are selected (or items not normally in the crazy 8) then it defaults to giving a mushroom. (eg: goldens, bullets and blue shells)

You could play this like a deck building game, where every team can choose some items before the game starts.
To balance things out every item could have a price, good Items like the shock cost a lot but a banana costs almost nothing.
The only problem is if you only pick one or two good items and nothing else you only get good items, you could fix that by forcing players to pick at least 5 different items or something idk. - Just an idea that popped into my head

Something like 'you must spend exactly 9 points' where power items are worth more than 9 and bad/common items like coins, bananas are with -ve points
So you could build a reds/shrooms deck or a bullets/bananas/coins deck and it would be roughly balanced. Would probably need some trial and error to figure out the exact numbers
I really like the idea of this, you should play this on a online tournament and have real people play so there’s more strategy!
I think the game won’t let you pick the crazy 8 only is because it needs items to put into the crazy 8. You saw with the Blooper crazy 8 that it added the blooper + Mushrooms and coins in the empty spots that items should be.
So In a mushroom only or shell only game, the crazy 8 is OP, In a power item only game… its very weak
I wish it just gave you 8 bloopers like how it gives you 8 bombs if you have only bombs.

I have an idea. What if you did red team with horns only and blue team with blue shells only? It's easier than mushrooms, but there are some tracks where you can't get enough horns to defend yourself.
i like the idea of two teams competing with their chosen item.
But maybe it's better to split all items between both teams.
For example, the captain of each team gets to pick 1 item, then the other captain picks one, then the first captain picks another and so on.
if there is an odd number of items, the last one won't be used at all.
if i remember correctly the crazy 8 only looked like that because you had only bloopers, i remember seeing a game where someone had craazy 8 and redshells and when they got the 8 it was 8 redshells

Blue shells & the horn only is the best combo . Great fun. The only game type I enjoy is triple green shells only
I’ve found one of the most ridiculous ways to play MKWii. My GCN controller kicked the can, so I decided to try playing with WiiMote and Nunchuck; however, I used the COD Rifle attachment for the nunchuck which made it a lot harder.
Hey there, did you know that by hplding down the use button you can hold the bomb behind you? If anyone touches it it blows up but doesn’t hurt you, but it will flip them

@TWD98: Yesturday I test this in Customize item if I turn nothing off, in the mushroom cup last race, finial lap just before the finish line go hit by a blue-shell, and when the immunatie was gone got hit by another blue shell, so it feel like super frantic mode, and this happen more often by simply removing the coins. Also it is possible in custom to have bullet bill, golden mushroom and star in first place with nothing turn off but very rare, and I'm not talking about you get a bullet bill from 2nd and used it in first, I meant your still in first and the roullette would stop on bullet bill, by removing the coins this will increase the chance that first place get that. the other test that I did, I put single mushroom, tripple mushroom gloden mushroom bullet bill, and star. first place always get does golden mushroom bullet bil and stars, but second to 4th place get single mushroom, so by removing single mushroom, now 2nd and 4th place only get golden mushroom, if you add fire flower that 2nd to 4th place only gets fire flower. I also test the crazy 8 single mushroom with crazy 8 if you get crazy 8 you get 8 single mushroom, Tripple mushoom only with Crazy 8 you have 8 big mushroom does represent 8 tripple mushroom, so using one will behave like you used all 3 in one shot, because the game does not want to used. So if you have single mushroom and tripple mushroom the crazy 8 will default into the 8 tripple mushroom as 8 big mushroom, so that mean if you go into normal item mode and get a crazy 8 people thought the mushroom that shows up was a single mushroom, it is actually a tripple mushroom. Also I do not know if that change is for the custom item only, before when you are first place with a boo item it never steal from the other player because no one is in front of you so it only steal mushroom from cargo, now if your first you can steal item from the players in the back. Lightning will no longer make you give up your glider, only shrink and lose item, other change in non mandatory glider, before if a bullet bill on the glider ramp you will not glide when the bullet bill stop even if you where still in the glide area, now you will still glide when the bullet bill stop, if you are still in the glide area.
If you turn crazy 8 on with 1 item from the crazy, you will only get that item in the crazy 8 so you could have 8 stars in the crazy 8

@TWD98: the reason the crazy 8 with blooper only give you a mix of blooper mushroom and coins even thought you disable mushroom and coins, they are too many blooper on the screen, if you wait for all cpu to finish, then it can give you 8 bloopers the crazy 8, the reason why Crazy 8 cannot be selected on its own, only one Crazy 8 can be activated at a time, and if you could it would just be a mess of de-sponding each other 4 mushroom and 4 coins, The crazy 8 item count as land item not roullette item so that is why it can go against one you actually pick to be in the roullette same with the boo item on its own, if it can't steal anything it will steal a mushroom from the land(cargo), they could be another reason why in blooper only with crazy 8 you still get mushroom and coins, the crazy 8 is program by default to help you and having only blooper is not helpfull, also Crazy 8 never appear in 1st place.
You should try only boos for one team and the other team can get any item. The only way to get items is to steal them from the enemy. Or you could do it the other way around where at any moment the enemy team can steal your items.

0:46 the bad part is that if you miss one bam shock dodge, you are basically screwed.
FUN FACT: the crazy 8 only works with the items that you choose. Which is why when you choose only one item and that item can’t be found in an 8 so it puts in a mushroom so it would work. But for items like the blooper which does work with the 8. It would stay that way.
This might just be the best feature in a Mario Kart game ever.

I found a way to have almost completely random items with this, I set the items to: Triple green shells, triple red shells, blue shell, triple mushrooms, golden mushroom, bullet, lightning, star, and crazy 8, a lot of items are removed for this to work but with these enabled you can pull any one of them even in first place
Side note crazy 8 is prob not from every position however I did pull the shock in first so…

Usually I do Mushrooms, Triple Mushrooms, Super Mushrooms, Super Stars and Lightning for my team and other team gets Coins in team races and in solo races I do Mushrooms, Triple Mushrooms, Super Mushrooms and Super Stars

I was playing with some custom item settings with my sister and apparently she got a star crazy 8 with 8 stars which I find funny.
I'd say You can't get crazy 8 because it is 8 roulettes inside of a roulette & you can't have nothing on the roulette, but then again you get coins & mushroom in crazy 8 while those 2 are of so i makes less sense

You should do a "Gun Game" of sorts with NMeade or Mayro or any guest! Where you both start with 100% chance of pulling a really powerful item (eg shock or bullet bill), and whoever wins race between the two moves onto the next item down (so guaranteed star for example), then down again (mega/golden) until they get all the way down to Fake Item Box/Blooper, and whoever wins first (between the two players) with the worst items wins the game!
Additional term, more optional: Placing last in any given race means you get setback one item, and placing first means you move TWO items down, to incentivise targeting players outside of your rival :)
I think that'd be really fun to watch, but it could be messy in terms of modding the game like that
