In fact, Freddy Mercury was a big fan of Montserrat Caballé, and he had the dream of singing with her. And, when Miss Caballé knew about it, and listened Freddy's music, became inmediately a Freddy's fan too. If you watch some interviews of them together, you can see the great love that Freddy had to Montserrat.
When she heard this rock star wanted to meet and possibly sing with her she asked her people what could I have in common with this rock star. Their people set up a meeting. Freddie so impressed her with his musical knowledge that they talked through the wee hours of the morning
Monserrat Caballé is in my opinion the best opera singer of all times. She was the idol of Freddie Mercury before he started his career. Singing with her was for him like a miracle, a dream came true (in his own words)
I completely agree..Mercury likely was the best front man of and rock band and definately the best live performer of all time...and somehow they made it work
Montserrat asked Freddy why he haven't wrote a song about her hometown and this is what he did. In my opinion the best song he made and also the best performance. The two voices are great together. RIP both
Montserrat belongs to Barcelona and she was asked to produce a song for the 1992 games. She suggested a collaboration with Freddie and the rest is history.
@@orraman5427 Not sure how this version started Mike has explained in interviews they weren't asked to do a song for the olympics Freddie and mike wrote Barcalona When it was recorded her brother who was invilved with organising the olympics put it forward and it was chosen Freddie hadn't wrote it for that
That was the best opening song of Olympics in history..nothing before and after came even close..that was an 11/10 performance(live) by 2 of the best singers in their field in history
Freddie was a huge fan of opera, so I've read. He will have been super stoked to have been a part of all this, and promoting the 1992 Barcelona Olympics that unfortunately he never lived to see. Had he still been alive and well by the time the opening ceremony kicked off, it's highly likely the pair would've performed this there.
Freddie Mercury was a great admirer of Montserrat Caballé, one of the most famous opera singers in history, which meant that when they met in person they became great friends. As a result of their friendship, Freddie proposed to Caballé to sing together, and since Barcelona had been chosen as the venue for the future 1992 Olympic Games, he composed this song for their opening. They also recorded an album with several more songs. Unfortunately he left us half a year before the event in which everyone would have heard him live singing with his great friend.
The story of how this song/album came about is so lovely. Freddie joked in an interview on Spanish television how he'd like to perform with Montserrat Caballe Freddie idolised her and when she heard about the interview, she responded positively. He wrote the song and an album for them both, which is why this is more like opera with elements of theatrical rock.
On Spanish TV in 1986, Freddie mentioned that Montserrat was his favorite singer in the world. He was reportedly amazed by the legendary ability of Montsy (his nickname for her), to control her voice. “He had such love and admiration for her, he was always watching to make sure everything was perfect for her” (Montserrat’s niece) 💐💐
There is an inaccuracy. Fredi has long admired opera since his youth and dreamed of singing in opera. And Manserat is his favorite singer. He adored her. And now his dream came true...
Hi sunshine. Thanking you so much for looking at these video. For a long time & requesting many, many times to check this out. I thought you would enjoy. There is also another video of this with Freddie wearing a black tux. Check this out on the side. it's somewhat different. Be Happy, Mark
Freddie Mercury had so much more to give, Sadly he was not allowed the time to carry on. But what a legacy of music and performance he left for us to enjoy.
Hi Beautiful Biss. I watched a documentary a few years back, on how this duet came to be. Freddie had already been diagnosed with AIDS, and when they met for the first time, he refused to kiss Montserrat but instead proffered his hand to shake hers. She, apparently, found this to be quite rude, so he had to confide in her and explain about him having AIDS. She took his face in her hands and gently kissed him on the lips & their great friendship started from there. They rehearsed the song over three days before finally filming it. The song was used by the BBC as the score for their coverage of the 1992 Olympic games in Barcelona. Hope you're having a great day/time ... Big Hugs ... Dougie XX
Another masterpiece. The conjunction of the Voice of Rock and the Voice of the Classics in perfect harmony. Rock and Classics have a lot in common, more than is believed and thought. Both genres are full of Rockstars. Celebrating the Barcelona 92 Olympic Games, nothing was better than this interpretation to celebrate the greatest festival of Humanity.
You're right. This was fun for Freddie. And, a dream come true. There is an entire album of Freddie and Montserrat Caballe. They truly loved each other and this project meant the world to them. Freddie's last stage performances were in support of the Barcelona album ❤
During a flight of the band Queen for a concert in Barcelona, a journalist asked Freddy Mercury what he preferred in Barcelona. Freddy answered 'the catalan Nightingale', that was the nickname of Montserrat Caballe. Their song became the official anthem of the Barcelona olympic games.
I like your comment about them being confident of their capabilities and brought their best to this performance. It's stunning! So beautiful together. I agree he was enjoying himself immensely ... but so was she. What a stunning combination of his rock opera style and voice range and her out-of-this-world voice. Enjoyed this respectful reaction and review. Nicely done. I had goose bumps, too.
This was one of the happiest times in Monsterats life. She adored Freddie and this collaboration allowed her to “just sing”. Opera required her to stick to the script and the story being told, this album allowed her to have fun and step out of her comfort zone.
If i remember correctly, the lyrics of the song, written by Freddie, describe him meeting Montserrat for the first time, they met in Barcelona for the first time, if memory serves, hence the title reflecting the location of the first meeting.: "Barcelona it was the first time that we met Barcelona how can I forget The moment that you stepped into the room you took my breath away"
This was the first collaboration between a rock singer and an opera diva, but Freddie was much more than a rock singer. He and Mike Moran composed a whole duet album in this operatic style, Freddie's dream came true.
I loved Barcelona Olympic Games. Every night the transmissions of competitions ended with this song. And after the games ended, there was a radio show where the whole album was played. Perfection.
Between Freddie and Montserrat, they actually collaborated together on an entire album; the Barcelona album also included several tracks credited to Tim Rice - the lyricist who works with Andrew Lloyd Webber!
Watching this is emotional because it was so special to Freddie. I love knowing that their meeting, musical collaborations and performances together brought him so much happiness, it was his dream coming true. 👑

Hello Bisscute, without a doubt a different experience for both singers, I think they both came out of their respective comfort zones to give us this beautiful performance. Taking advantage of the fact that this week International Women's Day will be celebrated, I would like to suggest a reaction to the singer Nina Simón, who in addition to having been a great singer, was a fighter for the civil rights of people of African descent. I understand that she received 15 Grammy Award nominations and was recognized with the Grame Hall Of Fame in 2000, and that two days before she died, on April 19, 2003, she was awarded an honorary diploma at the Curtis Institute, the Philadelphia academy that rejected her when she was 19 for being black. I suggest the song Ain't Got No, in its live version, or Feeling Good, both equally beautiful. Greetings and a special hug for you on Women's Week, from Mexico City.

Skill and talent, unlike any other.
