    OMG!!!! I was there! It was a difficult time in my life: homeless, unemployable, sick and tired of being sick and tired! I passed out and blacked out during the concert. When I came to, 400K people were gone and continued my journey of addiction for several more years. By God's Grace, I just celebrated 36 years of continuous sobriety and now when I watch this concert 40 years later, I'm grateful not only to be alive...but to be available to help my fellow man.
    Long Live the Music :-)

      Don't take all that 12 step bullshit seriously George. You recovered on your own. Fuck the group. A/A is good at first but anyone who stays with them more than a year is headed for trouble. All kinds of 12 step side effects can occur like.
      Anxiety
      Depression
      Thoughts of suicide
      Suicide etc.
      The oldtimers in A/A can be some really sick fucks. I said to one.
      "You've got thirty years sober but STILL go to meetings"? Like WTF is up here? I say that these people are weak.
      Twelve Steppers are told the same scam.
      "We all tried it on our own and failed. If you ever leave the group you're going to slip right back to Shitville only it'll be even worse".
      THe perfect subliminal prescription for anxiety disorders Depression and of course slips. Incidentally! Take note here I'm very serious about the following!!!
      EMT's and paramedics answering suicide attempt calls have long noticed a whole bunch of poor fuckers lying dead or dying over their own lengthy handwritten life stories. THE POOR FELLERS WERE WRITING THEIR 4TH STEP and their Depression worsened so they took their own lives.
      Basically, A/A is a cult. Just quit. Fuck those sick bastards. If you want spirituality (which is just another name for "religion"?) Go to church or synagogue. And I'm completely serious about this. In Christianity and Judaism, we see congregations genuinely concerned over their fellows. The whole basis of Western civilization rooted from these two paths. Notice that I didn't include Islam. As there's some really sorry ass child molesting fuckers.

      So many times just before his untimely death, like Brian, he was kind of half-heartedly involved in the Beach Boys, and you wouldn't even see him at most gigs. But for one moment in 1980, it was like 1964 all over again, and Dennis made a decision he was not going to give his drumsticks over to some random member of the "road" band--he was going to be an active participant in the music he helped create all those years ago--and it was a wonderful thing to see!

    • @SeahorsesJay
      @SeahorsesJay 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      The Beatles were the better band with better PR and better image, but they were essentially just a rock band who experimented with instruments and goofy lyrics. The Beach Boys weren't prolific as a band unit, for their first 11 albums, they relied on Brian Wilson for everything - that's just one man writing producing and singing almost everything they did - compared to The Beatles who shared writing credits and had to have a producer come in and help them out. However the most important thing to me is that The Beach Boys were all gifted singers, even Mike Love could hold a tune - whereas nobody in The Beatles had a particularly refined voice, and they couldn't harmonize for shit.

    I was 13 and had been lucky enough to have a friend who’s divorced dad was living and working in DC. We stayed with him the whole week before. 2 kids alone just kicking around DC getting into trouble like we were in an 80’s movie. Seeing the monuments and acting cooler than we were. The whole town was buzzing about the concert. We sat in the new cars on his dads car dealership lot and listened to the radio talking about it. By morning it was already packed and we thought there was no way we would ever see a thing. Then we saw kids about our age begin climbing the trees on the right of the stage just at the outskirts of the main crowd. We climbed up and got a great big branch and just sat with an amazing view and shade for the whole show. Core memory that I will have forever.

    Carl was the glue that held the Beach Boys together...when unfortunately, big brother Brian, had his major malfunction. Carl deserves as much credit for the Beach Boys' success as Brian gets. Al Jardine does as well...for that matter. Mike has a great voice...but he was just as goofy as Brian was at times. And we can give a big thanks to Bruce Johnston, for coming in and picking up all the left over pieces. But yeah...Carl was a phenomenal performer, who, in my opinion, is in the shadow of Brian, and really shouldn't be. ☀️

    • @Da_Mick
      @Da_Mick 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Actually, the band tightens up noticeably when the other drummer takes over. Dennis flails away unnecessarily, trying to keep up, and always did. This makes him play to the back of the beat, essentially following the band, rather than driving it, which creates a sloppier sound -- the drums stick out sounding busy rather than in sync as an felt but not heard part of the music.

    • @karmafrog1
      @karmafrog1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@Da_Mick Actually, you are expressing your perception and your opinion, and God bless you for your right to it. Dennis Wilson is about the least "busy" drummer in rock that wasn't named Moe Tucker or Meg White.
      As for behind the beat making for a sloppier sound that doesn't drive the band, Al Jackson Jr. would like a word.
      Nobody ever drove a band harder than Dennis on the '68 live version of "Do It Again." To be fair to your point though, Dennis was past his peak in 1980 (I think he'd only been back with the band a short while here) and Bobby F. is a fine drummer (but they had many other more techy replacements not nearly as good).

There was a tall, long haired guy and his girlfriend standing at a display case, looking at an item for sale. I didn’t look at his face, as I was interested in an item next to him. He completed his transaction with the sales person and started to walk out. The sales person stepped over to me and said, “Do you know who you were standing next to?” I said no, who? He said “Brian Wilson”. I turned and looked, and yup, it was him. Missed my chance to at least say hi. I have loved those guys since day one.

    THIS is what put me over the wall as a Beach Boys fan. HBO kept playing this from 1981 until at least 1985 or so. Every time I came upon it, I left it on. Same for my mom and dad. We all became deeper Beach Boys fans from then on out. All three Wilson brothers. Although it's hard to tell where Brian goes off to when he's not on camera. This was Dennis before he made his big turn for the worst. As for his playing, he's still on point here.

      Brian was barely there. Sang very little and his facial expression was flat. At times I couldn't locate him on stage. It was sometime the following year that his family brought back Eugene Landy, his quack psychologist, for what turned out to be about 9 years of overinvolvement in his life before they finally got an injunction preventing Landy from contacting Brian. Dennis got better on drums over the years, but he knew his limitations and did not resent it when studio drummers played on the recordings.

      The 80's were about as dead of a decade as you can get , unless you're a kid and missed the 60's. Take it from someone who was lucky to experience that time . Went down hill since the early 70's . ✌.

      I was in the Marine Corps .I was hit at Khe Sanh 2/23/68 .
      The 60's also had the Cuba crisis , President Kennedy was assassinated , Robert Kennedy was killed , Martin Luther King Jr. was killed , We had the first man in space , we landed on the moon , Woodstock , Charles Manson .
      I'd definitely say the 60's wasn't a boring time to be alive .
      If you watched the movie " Dazed and confused " the year was 1976 and a girl is talking with her friends on the last day of school at a party . She was saying how that time sucked. She said " well the way I see it every other decade is good , she said " the 40's swung , the 50's were boring as hell , the 60's definitely rocked , and the 70's , well , they obviously sucked, so the 80's should follow suit and be really cool . But they obviously were really boring , unless you liked the song " Disco Duck " and Molly Ringwald's movie " Pretty in Pink " and 16 candles .
      The 90's and over , forget it , BUT one thing for sure. You will always be in the history books until the Earth explodes , they will say LONG , LONG TIME AGO there was this VIRUS all over the Earth that killed ######## many people . That my friend you can COUNT ON , and you will always be part of that terrible time !!

So, no oceans for us, but, we felt like we were on top of the world when we skied. Years later when grew up I met my first boyfriend an 8-track of "Wild Honey" was playing I fell in love with the Beach Boys 💕 and so did we.

    Such pure voices. They have never needed any autotune. I was born in 1980 and I can remember listening to The Beach Boys with my parents on WCBS-FM 101.1 in New York City. Every time we took a car trip that’s what was on. I think I fell in love with The Beach Boys music when I was about 8 years old. When I was 10 my parents took me to my very first concert. We saw The Beach Boys and Chicago at Brendan Byrne Arena in East Rutherford, New Jersey. They brought the house down. They played Kokomo and people did a conga line around the arena. This music brings back so many wonderful memories. I often wish that I was born in the 1950s, to really see them in their prime!

    Dennis has to be the most exciting Rock drummer that ever lived.
    No other drummer makes me just yell fuck yeah and gives me the chills.
    He made the Beach boys Rock.
    Kowalsky was very good, Dennis played the drums like a F1 driver, balls out all the way.
    I especially love the way this concert starts. To start songs, the Beach boys used to jam a little bit and get their rhythm like they do in the second piece, Do It Again. But the show started with big whole note chord, drum flam and go Darlin'
    Fuckingtastic

    My wife and I together with some friends, saw The Beach Boys along with Chicago, at Anaheim Stadium on 7/4/76. The stage was placed out in centerfield and the entire field and stands were PACKED !!! It was also Brian's first appearance back on stage after several years of Dr. Mandy-induced absence. The Beach Boys rocked the Stadium so hard that all the upper decks were actually swaying in step with the crowds' dancing and the Stadium officials had to keep asking the fans in the upper decks to "sit down". The next day I was driving down Pacific Coast Highway in nearby Laguna Beach and when I turned my head to my right, Alan Jardine and Mike Love were riding alongside in a white Jaguar with Jardine driving. Great days!!!
