No not on those old saws, but if you take the time and money to make everything tight on the saw, seals, gaskets etc, and a pull starter in good working condition with the correct length of cord I find a decomp is not a must. Although I do like having a decomp on my 272, a definite plus on that saw.
Did the same on an sk 288 cylinder that had the boss but was sold without the decompression valve. Very fortunate having a friend that works in a machine shop!

I put a decompression valve on a husky 61, starts much easier now.
