You'll find that Eric Clapton's leads stay mostly "within the music", unlike many others. Jimmy Page would get much wilder, and I like him, too, a lot. But I like Clapton's style a lot as well. You'll hear more of his heavier stuff if you listen to Cream. The riff in Layla is one of the top guitar riffs of all time, for me.

Eric Clapton is one of the greatest guitar players of all time. He was in several bands over the years: Yardbirds, Cream, Derek and the Dominos, Blind Faith, Delaney and Bonnie and Friends as well as an extensive solo career. His music is fantastic, you should take some time to get to know some more of it. I absolutely love this song. The studio version of this song (the long version, Dereck and the Dominos) is breathtaking because it has Duane Allman also playing guitar and the two of them together gives me goosebumps just thinking of it. I have seen Clapton live a few times, he is such a humble person, shy and soft spoken. It is hard to believe when you see him performing like a boss then slipping into his quiet and introverted self as he thanks the audience for the applause he somehow seems to believe he doesn't deserve. Clapton's nickname has always been "Slowhand" and to watch him play is mind boggling because he barely moves his fingers and yet he is able to bend notes out that make you wonder where they came from. Thank you for your reaction.

He had the admiration from one of his idols Rock's 1st guitar hero Mike Bloomfield. Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs album ranks as one of the greatest guitar albums. Ranks up there with Jimi Hendrix's Electric Ladyland, Roy Buchanan's Loading Zone and Chet Atkins and Les Paul's Chester and Lester.

I love 💕 love 💕 💕 Eric Clapton I think he's underrated as a vocalist and as a guitarist.I like ALOT of solo stuff,Cream was good a little on psychedelic side for my taste. this is a really great song it was in many things but it was in a Goodfellas if you've ever seen that.

Underrated as a guitarist? On which planet?

  • @jennhurl
    @jennhurl 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I thought I'd try to shed some light on two very hot button issues & the controversies that followed which Eric was involved in which people are mentioning. Feel free to add onto or correct anything I've gotten wrong.
    BACKGROUND:
After World War II ended in '45, Britain needed immigrants to help with the resconstruction of their economy. The Royal Commission wanted only white Eurpeans to come but eventually opened it's doors to people from Pakistan, India, the Caribbean, etc.
In the 50's the influx created a backlash from racist policy makers who wanted to keep Britain mainly a white country.
By the '60's most citizens felt too many immigrants had been let it citing concerns for violence & poor communities.
In the '70s, the'1976 Race Relations Act' was passed to ensure racial equality and protect immigrants. The impact the immigrants made in helping Britain get back on its feet in those two decades was huge.
I have many friends in the U.K. and they all tell me that today, the population is beautifully diverse & race is pretty much a non-issue. (British folks, chime in if that's not your experience)
    WHEN & WHAT HAPPENED:
So... back up to 1976 when 'The Race Relations Act' was passed. Political & racist comments had even spilled over amongst some rock stars. It was then that an extremely intoxicated (that's no excuse) Clapton was onstage & made an absolutely abhorant rant regarding the immigration using awful racial slurs. To me, his opinions he spewed were hateful & ignorant at best.
    FALLOUT & CONSEQUENCES:
“I was so ashamed of who I was, a kind of semi-racist, which didn’t make sense. Half of my friends were black, I dated a black woman and I championed black music.”
    - Eric Clapton
Clapton’s bizarre outburst, which helped spur the Rock Against Racism movement, saw him labeled a racist for many years, and he has subsequently apologized many times, blaming his addiction to drink and drugs for the outburst.
    WHAT HAPPENED WITH COVID?
Next... Jump forward to 2020 when Eric took an outspoken political stance against the Covid vaccine & lockdown. He based it on his own personal experience with the vaccine which he said was "disastrous". His hands & feet froze up and felt numb & frozen for 2 weeks. The vaccine which was advertised as "safe" caused a severe reaction for him. He also spoke out against mandated lockdown. “I’ve been a rebel all my life, against tyranny and arrogant authority, which is what we have now,” Clapton wrote.
    MY PERSONAL THOUGHTS:
I'm not in any way excusing Clapton's rant nearly 50 years ago but I hope people also discuss his apologies made & philanthropic charities he supports. I like to look at the circumstances in which something happened, growth, & the sum total of someone's life - not just one piece.
The pandemic, mandated lockdowns, masks, & shot requirements were a divisive issue period. People lost life long friendships over it. Public sentiment spanned from "You better wear a mask & get your required shot or you're selfish & endangering the life of others" to "there's no way the government is telling me what to do & Fauci is an idiot". Eric is a rock legend so any opinion expressed publicly are big news. If you don't agree with him, it's even bigger news.
    Sorry this was so long....
Hopefully I got at least some facts correct. Again, feel free to chime in with respectful discussion. I ALWAYS love to learn!
    🌟Jen

Not the unplugged version, please 🙏 😢 The original studio track from 'Layla and other assorted Love Songs' -Derek and the Dominos is definitive, although there may be some live versions with adequately sympathetic support.
Okay!! So sorry I jumped the gun, guessing from the thumbnail before it was released that it was the unplugged/acoustic version, which has its fans and advocates. This is, in fact, as good a live version as I've heard.
I'd be surprised if you haven't yet done Clapton with Cream - 'Sunshine of Your Love', 'White Room', 'Crossroads', or 'Badge', co-written with Beatle George Harrison whose wife Patti the entire album by Derek and the Dominoes - 'Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs' was dedicated to. Patti and Eric eventually married with George's blessing, and the two guitar greats remained friends right up until George's death. Eric hosted and led the band for the tribute to George held a year later at the Royal Albert Hall. A must-see show.
Check out Eric's take on Jimi Hendrix' 'Stone Free', Stevie Wonder's 'Higher Ground' or 'Presence of the Lord' and 'Can't Find My Way Home' with the supergroup he formed with Cream drummer, Ginger Baker and ex-Spencer Davis group singer/keyboardist/guitarist Stevie Winwood after Cream's demise. Also worthwhile, anything from the Cream reunion concerts from 2005. Rest In Peace and Power, Jack Bruce and Ginger. No fighting please, or you're headed to the basement. lololoh hell.
Also from the 'Layla' album, 'Have You Ever Loved A Woman' and 'Bell Bottom Blues'.

Eric loved Jimi, was just shocked and intimidated on first hearing by his talent/genius. Jimi came out of the blocks slaying a song Eric loved but thought was too hard, I think 'Killing Floor', maybe. Jimi's manager Chas found Eric backstage shaking, trying to light a cigarette, and blurting out, "Is he REALLY that good?!" Chas knew of course he really was.

Huge respect for Eric Clapton until recent revelations about the man's personal views... his political stances... and his rather sordid personal life... Before the internet, we couldn't have access to a music legend's history or personal profile... so, we could enjoy the music he created.
But now, that can of worms is open and Clapton's recent cozying up to demagogues, right wing politicians, and disregard for public health measures in a pandemic... as well as his past vocations about black folks in England, have been revealed... (This despite being a fan of 50's blues and the late B.B. King... but then again, so is an open racist like Ted Nugent)...
    How the mighty have fallen...

Anyone can make his/her own decisions on which music to listen to and where his money is spent, but where does it end? Is music always political, and can we only listen to saints? Can you separate the music from the person? Is redemption possible? What about movie stars? Sports stars? It’s a slippery slope to navigate.
