    Free speech discussions online take on a pretty strange form, and it seems like it's only the wierd people talking about it. But what's the deal with that, and what can we learn from PragerU?

    Mia, I am a cis, white, mostly hetero male who has auditory/tactile synesthesia (I feel sound and occasionally I hear a touch, be it a painful slap or a gentle touch). I did not know I was a synesthete until I was in my 50's, though I knew my brain was not close to what doctors call "normal." I celebrate neural diversity!

      I was aware that I had some form of synesthesia, but I had never heard of this kind! I think you just described why I’ve always been so sensitive to loud sounds! Sounds are just so... jarring! And painful sometimes! And bright light makes me cold too. It sounds so weird to describe but it’s what it feels like. Thank you for sharing your experience... I think I’ve just had a mini self-realization.

      @@kaleidoscopickait I think the first mention of this form of synesthesia was a medical journal paper in 2010 about a traumatic brain injury that lead to the patient feeling sounds and hearing touch. Most people are born with synesthesia and have some cross over into other forms i.e. Fresh artichokes taste violet, which is lovely and lemon meringue pie is a putrid orange to me. There are two FB groups dedicated to synesthesia, if want to learn more.

    You’re right about length of videos being a factor. I am watching this video, but because it is 50 minutes long, it took me longer to get around to watching it than I might have done, because it felt like I had to set aside time to watch it (even though it is only roughly the length of the single episodes of many TV shows I watch), and I could see how someone would be tempted to just watch the shorter video.

    I live in America. In America this discussion has a serious issue in that people believe free speech allows harassment, allows the repression of other people's opinions and allows them to essentially abuse whoever they want. The problem with this discussion is that one side is using it as a shield to commit abuses, and thus it is something we can't easily approach without getting into the mess of people's ignorance

Prior to the 80’s, great, fantastic, all artwork is unambiguously masterpieces but then the 80’s came along with their disco and, idk, gays and now art bad. Rip art, the 80’s killed it.

    I feel like the filter/corporate platform/etc issues are related to losing the idea of an irl public commons- it's a lot harder to manipulate speech in an irl town square or bar or whatever, but there isn't much of anywhere in the modern world where you can exist and discuss things without paying for it, and the internet kind of takes the place of those spaces- just a lot more controlled. Part of me thinks the solution to this is some spin on the "internet as a publicly owned utility" concept, but I have *no* idea what that would look like.

    Ah damn I watched the entire video before it was re-uploaded, I hope that didn't happen to too many people, influencing the algorithm stats. It's a very good video, touched a bunch of thoughts I have on the topic.
    I think it's especially noticable when platforms like twitter and youtube selectively enforce their community guidelines. They ban some alt-right channel and everybody is cheering, and then they ban an lgbtq creator and everybody is mad. And still I feel like nobody sees the underlying issue that these big companies just have absolute power over the most important communication and entertainment mediums in our generation. And this means both in direct terms through bans etc., but also through their machine learning algorithms which directly predict and influence our behaviour and do their best to turn us into social media addicts (gotta maximize that engagement!).
    The only way I can think of to solve this problem would be to declare social media platforms as public infrastructure and build accessible, transparent open source alternatives with clear rules and guidelines.
    I don't know how you would convince people to switch over though, when the constant dopamine feed of an algorithmically crafted timeline is exaclty what keeps people coming back to these platforms.

    Regarding fact-checking (32:14) I have come up with a rule I apply to all TH-cam channels : I will fact-check any video I watch that raises my eyebrow at some point. If the facts check out, good. If the video lied or misrepresented, I ban the whole channel. Forever. Without appeal. And I extend the ban to all joint channels in cases of MCN's. I watched a couple Prager U videos years ago. I've never been on that channel once since then. I give no second chances. I place the onus on the content creator to fact-check. If they don't, I don't care where the "error" came from. Not my problem if you've been successfully lied to, it just means you're lazy and/or unreliable. This rule has saved me a lot of time and effort.

    A level playing field of _all_ ideas seems terrible. I'd take it over the current situation, but I don't want discriminatory ideas to have any kind of pedestal, like you mentioned with the principle of harm. I'm fine with ideas that are capitalist, libertarian, liberal, communist, anarchist, socialist, democratic, even authoritarian, and what have you being discussed on a level playing field, and I can see how each of them can bring something useful to the table, but there is nothing useful that can be gotten out of fascism, racism, sexism, or any of the bad -isms. Having them on a level playing field with other ideas as if they were equally valid causes nothing but harm.

    • @someonespotatohmm9513
      @someonespotatohmm9513 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      But who determines which ideas cause nothing but harm, in different times and places "capitalist, libertarian, liberal, communist, anarchist, socialist, democratic, even authoritarian" ideas are considered to cause nothing but harm. The problem is not that we don't agree some ideas are bad and should not be considered, the problem is we can't agree which and more importantly how this should be determined.

    • @bbureau12
      @bbureau12 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Who defines and interprets those -isms, though? It's a big old world. There are people in it who consider BLM racist and feminist sexist (and some members probably are, as are some of their critics.) I fully agree free speech (like any social construct) needs controls. No one should be allowed to incite violence or make threats... but to me those threats need to be pretty tangible, and I think that, when in doubt, society should err on the side of tolerance.

    • @juls_krsslr7908
      @juls_krsslr7908 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It's a level playing field to express ideas, not the value of the ideas themselves. If someone says something racist or sexist, they can, but no one has to give it equal attention or equal legitimacy. Right now, racist, sexist people with money and power can essentially pay to have their ideas distributed widely and in a manner that suggests legitimacy while opposing voices are drowned out and de-legitimized. In a level playing field, all ideas might be equally accessible, but listeners can reject anything they don't like. Having money would not give someone an advantage.

    When I learned the history behind "you can't yell fire in a crowded theater" my opinion on the phrase turned hard lol

  • @saizai
    @saizai 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    FYI: the "yelling fire in a crowded theater" thing is dicta from Schenck v US, 249 U.S. 47, 52 (1919) - saying that it's OK to criminalize socialists burning draft cards. The relevant part, verbatim (minus citations):
    The document in question upon its first printed side recited the first section of the Thirteenth Amendment, said that the idea embodied in it was violated by the Conscription Act and that a conscript is little better than a convict. In impassioned language it intimated that conscription was despotism in its worst form and a monstrous wrong against humanity in the interest of Wall Street's chosen few. It said "Do not submit to intimidation," but in form at least confined itself to peaceful measures such as a petition for the repeal of the act. The other and later printed side of the sheet was headed "Assert Your Rights." It stated reasons for alleging that anyone violated the Constitution when he refused to recognize "your right to assert your opposition to the draft," and went on "If you do not assert and support your rights, you are helping to deny or disparage rights which it is the solemn duty of all citizens and residents of the United States to retain." It described the arguments on the other side as coming from cunning politicians and a mercenary capitalist press, and even silent consent to the conscription law as helping to support an infamous conspiracy. It denied the power to send our citizens away to foreign shores to shoot up the people of other lands, and added that words could not express the condemnation such cold-blooded ruthlessness deserves, &c., winding up "You must do your share to maintain, support and uphold the rights of the people of this country." Of course the document would not have been sent unless it had been intended to have some effect, and we do not see what effect it could be expected to have upon persons subject to the draft except to influence them to obstruct the carrying of it out. The defendants do not deny that the jury might find against them on this point.
    But it is said, suppose that that was the tendency of this circular, it is protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution. Two of the strongest expressions are said to be quoted respectively from well-known public men. It well may be that the prohibition of laws abridging the freedom of speech is not confined to previous restraints, although to prevent them may have been the main purpose …. We admit that in many places and in ordinary times the defendants in saying all that was said in the circular would have been within their constitutional rights. But the character of every act depends upon the circumstances in which it is done. … The most stringent protection of free speech would not protect a man in falsely shouting fire in a theatre and causing a panic. It does not even protect a man from an injunction against uttering words that may have all the effect of force. … The question in every case is whether the words used are used in such circumstances and are of such a nature as to create a clear and present danger that they will bring about the substantive evils that Congress has a right to prevent. It is a question of proximity and degree. When a nation is at war many things that might be said in time of peace are such a hindrance to its effort that their utterance will not be endured so long as men fight and that no Court could regard them as protected by any constitutional right. It seems to be admitted that if an actual obstruction of the recruiting service were proved, liability for words that produced that effect might be enforced. The statute of 1917 in § 4 punishes conspiracies to obstruct as well as actual obstruction. If the act, (speaking, or circulating a paper,) its tendency and the intent with which it is done are the same, we perceive no ground for saying that success alone warrants making the act a crime. … Indeed that case might be said to dispose of the present contention if the precedent covers all media concludendi. But as the right to free speech was not referred to specially, we have thought fit to add a few words.

    As one of those "tech people who talk about the filter bubble", I've already been talking about this a lot. I am always on the lookout for alternative platforms, but very often, these platforms lean heavily to the right (for example LBRY/Odysee). This is exactly for the reasons you spoke of in this video: The right monopolizes this talking point.

    For the LGBT creators, a lot of them talk about more adult stuff and that just got the channel flagged as less ad friendly. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m gay myself and it’s not a case of, “NANCY GET THE GAYS OFF MY TV.” Like I forgot the name of this creator but he was a gay guy and he made really entertaining videos like teaching his parents gay terms and stuff. It’s entertaining yea, but it obviously gonna be less ad friendly and then he claimed he’s being discriminated against. Now I’m happy to have my mind changed on this. So please...

    Nice video! Though my CC would be that the colour grade on your footage is a little dark to my eyes - if you're using Lumetri Color in Premiere it might just need "Highlights" raised a tad to add some contrast. There's also a really good plug-in called FilmConvert we use at my work but it's a bit of a money-sink. (Sorry for backseat editing - I'm currently procrastinating work lol)

    I really think the point Mia made abt the immense gap between far-right content potential vs that of progressives/leftists is really valuable. Oftentimes, I see criticism of the more prominent "breadtube" ppl framing said TH-camrs as rcih & famous celebrities w no awareness of how radically underfunded even the "successful" breadtubers are in comparison to the billionaire-funded far right propaganda machine.

    35:44-36:00 There's actually quite a few organizations to counter balance the likes of Prager U and the Daily Wire, they're just not as prominent. Some which come to mind include 'More Perfect Union,' 'Democracy NOW!', the 'Gravel Institute,' 'Represent US,' 'Second Thought,' Vox (arguably), and many more. And that's not even counting all the individual TH-camrs and more mainstream infotainment shows that permeate the platform as well.

    Very good video !
    Yeah, I think that the main problem of the discussion around free speech (or rather, by free speech absolutists) is that it takes free speech as, well, an absolute, disconnected and un-influenceable by anything else that happens in the world, be it irl or online. The reality of ~living in a society~ is that things are more nuanced and we need to think about what we can accept and allow, taking into account all the economical and political power dynamics at play. Which is, indeed, a tough nut to crack.
    And then there's the whole other question of what speech is actually capable of achieving, and are people actually willing to engage with the debunking of the misinformation they believe in. Very tough nuts.

  • @dreye3215

    I think that the main problem is the word "freedom". Nowadays at least, that word tends to be very indifferent to power dynamics, with most of its usage referring to giving people in power the freedom to exercise said power however they want, like firing gay employees and whatnot. "Freedom" has become a synonym for deregulation.
    What the left wants in regards to free speech isn't to remove consequences for saying certain things, it's to level the playing field, giving marginalised groups an equal voice. It's about giving power to people without power, not deregulating the power that already exists.
