To reminisce.....
I had just dropped my family off at my in-laws, knowing that I'd pass by that evening's Peter Gabriel concert site,- I think in N. Va it was a Nissan Pavilion, or something. I drove in in the mid-afternoon, asked about tickets, which were plentiful for the outer amphitheater ring, under the sky. They let me in five hours early. AS I strolled around the grassy upper lawn, picking up trash, they played five or six Passion pieces, over and over again. For hours! I kept strolling. The soundtrack got even MORE repetitious, and after more of this meditative trance I did get curious about the stage and set-up, never, ever pursuing anyone, just enjoying the sound, and the walking. I remember , as a kid, the ambiance of funeral services outside of a stone church, as the organist played and the attendees gathered.
They let me stroll around and around and through, as if I was somebody cared for , or trusted.
But too much Passion!
Passion is perhaps the greatest of Peter’s works of art! It still haunts me.
The doudouk is a time machine taking one back to times before years were counted.
Absolutely lovely intro on the Armenian Duduk. I think "Passion" might even be my favourite Peter Gabriel album - and certainly my most played one. It's got so much emotion and ... well... passion, but not just in the religious sense.
@obsessivethinker7558 Incidentally I noticed it was a Turkish word just a few weeks ago when I was watching something with Turkish closed caption subtitles switched on (just to pick up a little Turkish), and I saw that a train whistle was described as "düdük". Seems a bit strange that the Armenian national instrument of the last few thousand years should be called by an Ottoman Turkish loanword, but I guess calling it "tsiranapogh" went out of fashion during the Ottoman Empire? 🤷
When you get a master of the doudouk on stage with Peter Gabriel, something magical is about to happen. "Passion" is a must-listen album and "The Last Temptation of Christ" is a must-watch film. A masterpiece of the highest form that will grab into your soul and change you.
Why does that instrument reach down into my soul. It pulls on the levers that release water into my eyes.
he is a master when it comes to playing the Doudouk
"With Andranik Askarian, he performed the duduk parts on 'The Feeling Begins', the opening track of Peter Gabriel's Passion, the soundtrack album from Martin Scorsese's film The Last Temptation of Christ. The duduk recording is actually an excerpt from a song titled 'The Wind Subsides', originally recorded for a collection of Armenian music released by Radio France's Ocora label."
Passion is an extraordinary musical work, composed in my opinion by the last music purist left in circulation, Peter Gabriel.
"Music Purist" is a good way to describe Gabriel.

Beautiful music.
It's actually an Armenian duduk. It's a double-reed instrument, not unlike an oboe. When you get a master on it, it makes magic.

The depth of Armenian melodies and sounds of Doudouk are the depths of the humanity itself.

It's always sad to realize that Peter Gabriel is not the composer of the song called Hovern Enkan despite all the credits earned by... It looks like plagiarism
