    Those pads work great but they do come apart. Don't forget to thoroughly clean the loose abrasive material out of any engine internal areas. Wouldn't want that stuff circulating in the lubrication system.

    yeah and you can use straight gasoline if you don't have break cleaner

      When I was a kid, my dad would pour some gas in a pan then wash his hand off after working on the car 😄

    Good ol' scuff pad and brake clean. Gets the silicone off without damaging the cross-hatching.
    Mercedes Benz tells us to leave a teeny tiny layer of old silicone on, because they also tell us to spray a "preparer" on before applying new silicone. Supposedly this softens the old silicone and makes it act as a sort of scaffolding for the new silicone to meld into. I never saw a difference either way, it didn't seem to matter if I left some silicone on or cleaned it to a shine, it didn't leak. Benz is weird.
