How To Install 7 Speed Cassette On 8/9/10 Speed Hub

  • I show what you need to do to mount a 7 speed cassette on to a bike wheel hub designed to fit 8, 9 or 10 speed cassettes. It involves mounting a 4.5mm spacer onto the hub. But you may need to file notches into the spacer to avoid having the cassette wobble. The wobble is caused by uneven rivets. I found these on Shimano cassettes.

You can also file off the rivet ends and remove the rivets to make the back of the cassette flat. The purpose of the rivets is to keep the cogs aligned and together when they are off the bike for convenience (not necessity), but they don't serve any purpose when the cassette is mounted on the wheel.

Elaine M Cardente I would have filed or ground off the rivets too but hey RJ does really neat work. I worried the shifting ramps wouldn’t line up but they only go on one way.

Thanks much for posting this! Your video informed me about spacer thickness and how to do the notches. Just finished doing this on the wheel I bought. I first put without notches on the spacer. The spacer was aluminum and rivet heads pressed their marks on the spacer, there was some wobble. After filing out the notches, no wobble!

Thanks for the video RJ! It already helped a lot! If there is a leftover 8 spedd cassete, you could use it, even that you could only shift 7 gears of its 8. They would be compatible despite the reach of the gears, right? A problem would be to use 9 or higher cassetes (the spacing beteween gears would be different, as well the chain itself).

IMPORTANT NOTE: On some bikes the spacer goes on the outside, installed after the smallest cog and before the threaded retaining ring. Such was the case with my bike.
I installed the spacer on the inside, before installing the cassette, as shown in this video. When I went to test the bike, the chain would come off the biggest cog, when I got to the top gear. And, on the other extreme, when I tried to shift to the smallest cog it would only go to the next to the smallest cog. I figured out that the spacer needed to go on the outside of the cassette, installed after the cassette.

  • @misternobody4644
    @misternobody4644 6 ปีที่แล้ว

You can also just remove the rivets (I used a grinder to grind off the rivet head, and a punch with a hammer to punch the rivets out) on the cassette and install the cogs individually. This way, there is no rivets that will contact the spacer and it will be much easier to clean the cogs individually later on. This will only work with some Shimano cassettes. Other Shimano cassettes have an internal spider/spacer that is riveted to all the cogs, making it more complex to remove all the rivets. The Shimano cassette that I've owned with a single internal spider/spacer does not have rivets that will interfer with the hub spacer, so removing its rivets is unnecessary.

A potential problem I've had with this method is that the spacer moves the entire cassette outboard. This can create alignment issues with the chain rings. If you then move the chainrings outboard with a spacer on the bb, the FD may not reach outer chainring. I wonder if there's a way to put the spacer on top of the highest gear before the lockring. Then you would just have to move the RD inboard.

Liked and subscribed, very helpful video, I've just put 2 new wheels on my bike, it's a new cassette as well, problem I've having is getting the tension correct for the gears, too tight then too slack to go back up.... it's trying to go back to first from second, but if i release tension to fix that then it's not tight enough in seventh to pull up to 6th🙄 if you get me, I've just put 2 plastic spacers behind the cassette and filed one down so the lock ring tightens. I've just come across your video...could this be causing my issue?
I've seen the pins but never thought anything of them. I've just got the bike bug so still learning.

I got fed up with all the 10,11,12,13 ? speeds and compatibility issues and I have now gone back to 7 speed cassette with the beefier chain. I get a better chain line and without loosing any range. (I have a 7 sp 11-34) everything is working great. I don't have to worry about cross chaining either because the chain is only going up or down 3 cogs. I love it and I'm going to keep riding 7 sp. The only downside to the spacer method is that empty space which could have been used for better stablity when 7 speed hub body is used. I tried to find a dedicated 7 speed rear hub but no luck so far.(ebay seems bit sketchy especially none of the items I saw mentions the condition of the cup and cone. Do you have any suggestions? or should I just be happy with what I have and not be greedy? Thanks for all your videos.

I ride 3x7 gears on a road bike. Cassette is 28 24 21 18 16 14 12. I'm using some old 9 speed cassettes to scavenge cogs so I can change my gearing to 28 24 21 19 17 16 12 to make gearing more useful to me since I rarely ride above 21mph. Need to use 7 speed spacers between cogs. Bike Gremlin says distance between cogs(aka cassette pitch) is 5 mm for 7 speed and 4.35 mm for 9 speed.
I always assumed 7 speed cogs were beefier/thicker but they're not really. Bike Gremlin site says 7 speed cogs are 1.85mm thick and 9 sp cogs are 1.78mm thick, only 7/100 mm difference.

Because there is only two rivets instead of three, is the cassette still sturdy and has no wobble and other possible moving, even the rivets only cover 1/3 of the cassettes area? I mean you can still use a cassette even one rivet or screw is lost?

I'm planning to buy a Tacx Neo trainer and to use my hybrid 7 speed cassette bike on it. The 4.5mm spacers from amazon are kosher (ihave a giant escape 3 all shimano parts)? I need a quiet trainer as my neighbour's wife is terminally ill and I'm too unfit to struggle in the cold and wet of winter!

I just tried to put a 9 speed cassette onto a wheel that had 8 speeds and it is a hair too short! Is there any measurements listed detailing which rear hubs will hold how many gears?

What is too short? The free hub? There are no spacers?

You could also grind the rivets off, they are only there for packaging and delivery, they play no part once on the bike.

Can i still use 8 speed cogs even if my rd is 7 speed?

I have a MTB with a Shimano Tourney CS-HG200-8 cassette.
    Cogs:
    32-28-24-21-18-16-14-12
    Crankset is a triple 24-34-42.
What I would like is to get rid of the 12 tooth cog because I really rarely use it, the 14 tooth is perfect for a top gear.
Could there be a 14-32, 8 speed cassette (or even a 7 speed) and then to add a first gear 34 or 36 tooth cog to have 8 gears?

You will have to research it.

The main problem was that one rivet was missing from this cassette, all I know that mine has all 3. I've installed the 4.5mm spacer along with 7speed cassette on a 8/9 speed hub without a problem and it sits as it should. This cassette seams new so variations should be taken into account.

Did you have problems with indexing after installing the cassette? I replaced the rear wheel on a Dahon D7; the new wheel was set up for an 8/9 speed, so I used a spacer like you did. However, I cannot get the derailleur to index correctly now - I can't switch to the small ring and my "2"gear takes me to the largest ring. Adjusting the H and L screws wasn't enough. Any hints or help?

+Jimmie Roan Are your shifters 7 speed? Did you readjust the cable? There are a lot of possibilities and I can't really answer without a lot more details.

I would like to know if I can convert my Ritchey 2x6 into a modern brake/speed shifter combo instead of the shifters on the lower part of the frame.

I have a selection of thin spacers, roughly 1-2mm thick. Can I combine them to get to the required width? Is there any compromise in structural integrity by doing so as opposed to buying a new single, thicker spacer. It's a budget build and I really don't wanna spend any more money than possible. Also they are spacers I just had laying around. They are aluminium I believe but not sure if they were designed for the free hub or another part/headset? Thank you, Stuart.
