  • It's hard to imagine a time when being gay could land men in jail but that was the reality in Australia for many years. In fact, Australia is home to what is thought to have been the world's only prison for homosexuals.

What that guy said at the very end about “it’s up to the broader community to decide whether we should say sorry” is so wrong. Yes, we have to make the choice to say sorry, but ultimately it’s up to whoever was harmed and persecuted to determine when an apology is necessary, because they are the ones who actually went through it. You were wrong, just apologize.

That way of thinking would have been very persuasive here in Ireland around the same time and even later into the 1980s...and the primary reason for that was that the Catholic Church has a very strong hold on Irish society and was indeed part of every social institution within Ireland as well...and what's more you didn't ever dare challenge the church or it's teachings in Ireland for fear of negative consequences...thankfully following the expose of a series of scandals from within the church which rocked Irish society, the way of thinking towards homosexuality has changed significantly...but there's still those out there who believe it to be a "menace" and typically because they view homosexuality as something which "destabilises" society...

Juan: Offensive behavior is almost always defined in law as behavior that offends the people in power. After all, the can make and alter the laws. The people in power then convince a large percentage of the general public that said behavior is offensive without giving the other side a chance to rebut the argument, or even to come out of the closet, as it were, to try to rebut the argument. Remember, the system is set up and being controlled by those already in power. Why on earth the rest of the populace listen to them or to a particularly charismatic leader just because he (how often is it a "she") seems convinced of the argument he's selling?

But here's the great thing: Australia is a wonderful society that reversed this evil and educated the public that it was wrong. Don't see much of the, shall we say, poor and oppressed world doing any of that.

Homosexuality used to be viewed the way our times views pedophilia, which the law in Australia still defines as sex with anyone under the age of eighteen. Every society has to have someone to scapegoat. In the past they used to scapegoat homosexuals. Now we scapegoat the scapegoaters of the past. Seems kinda hypocritical to me ... being intolerant of the intolerant.

    I'm just like ....
    Where are you ranking things?
What other menaces did you consider that you believed were *less* of a "menace" than "homosexuality"?
And while I ... don't exactly believe there's an answer to that question, I'm interested in hearing the response anyone might have for that 💙
What punishable offenses .... are less of a menace .... than "homosexuality"?
but also the first part of that question can have different qualifiers, if you like
    "What crimes against fellow humans"
"Which affronts to continued life on this planet"
"What impediments to the welfare of citizens"
And if anyone wants to put "beliefs" in the first part of that, I'll tell you about some beliefs:
I believe we need to stop finding excuses to hate each other 💙
and I believe we need to start recognizing where we thought we could relax, because we thought we found the right target; and it allowed us to be hateful to the wrong people 💙

Australia was a penal colony for England. All those uncouth people, prisoners, undesirable genes, cultists. That is where England sent them to. Australia. Even today people from England look at Australians with a jaundice eye. If you thought English looked at the Irish poorly just times that by 10 and that's how they view the Australians.
