32:23 'i want something that is just.. a total beast... after me... something that's just total instinct and savagery, claws fangs and furs' yeah me too
I'm glad you still liked this one! I'm very fond of it, even though some of its flaws are pretty noticeable in this video. The atmosphere is great, and I still love how the dream sequence was built up, along with the time spent in the house. One thing the game lets you do is explore without having something chasing after you, so you have two in-game days to learn the layout. That helps give an advantage against the monster. Yet the mundane activities (which do make sense, as you mentioned) still have this sense of underlying dread. Something is off, and by the time you get to see what is going on, it's built up to the point that just about anything would make the player jump. Another thing I noted was how the protagonist doesn't carry random items around until he knows what he needs them for. I liked the thought system since it makes more sense than the protagonist writing down stuff in a journal everywhere. The scattered reports get outright noted in the game, and I thought it was a good move for the experiment's purpose to be addressed in an ironic situation. That is, the scientist literally forgot what it was for, so rather than being "GENERIC EVIL EXPERIMENT that is NEVER EXPLAINED," it becomes, "Dude, why the heck was I doing this, what even justifies it?" It was also nice to have the game begin with the car running out of fuel rather than a car crash from a SPOOKY MONSTER. Sure, the being-stuck-for-lack-of-working-vehicle trope is used to heck and back, but this is a better way to do it than most. Really strong experience overall. It was great seeing it again!
Wow. I did like this game. I mean for such a bad engine game... Talent right here. It's not the graphics, it's the taste and the environment they gave it. Well done.

Babysitter Bloodbath was the first game I ever watched you play, and I go back to that video at least once a year. Those VHS style games are definitely my favorite.
John, your original playthrough of this game is still one of my favourite videos on TH-cam. That moment when you had to take a break because you where seeing flickers of light in the corners of your eyes is a moment I've never forgotten. Super glad you've gone back to play it again.
Thank you for playing this again! This was the exact game I was asking about in my comment on your replay of one late night so I this was a nice little coincidence that you happened to put up a vid of the game I was asking about :D Thank you very much!!
I think this game still holds up really well. I re-played it a year ago with my cousins watching and they were pretty freaked. That slow build up towards walking down those basement stairs and finding the door open still made me tense even though I knew what was gonna happen.
To this day, I still think the monster in Phobia 1.5 is one of the scariest monsters in any indie game I've come across. It continues to set me on edge every time I watch these chase sequences, so I can only imagine what it's like to actually play through them yourself.
Thanks for playing! Phobia was a fun watch and rewatching a replay wasn't bad. Thank you for playing and editing. Wished it went to like, 2.0 or had more to it.
What I do enjoy this old horror game is that the creator know how to keep some part explained and the player character is not obnoxious. 1) The dead rats in the basement room explain how the creature stay alive 2) The character know that he is the one let the creature out by start the power
I love this game, and every time I see game-play of it, it is one of the few games that is able to build up the atmosphere well enough to make me physically jump or give me chills. The effective placement of key items in dead-ends that you need to grab mid-chase-sequence really helps the tension and feeling of being trapped. I think it holds up very well, and I almost jumped out of my seat with excitement when I saw you were playing it again. Thanks for another amazing video.
Does anyone else think that the sound that we hear in game sound like nails across a hamster cage? In 8:24 I remember my hamster cage made the same sound when I was younger.
"It says paranoid but I don't think we're supposed to be able to solve it yet" This is so relatable! It kind of reminds me of how I used to be scared of every horror game, too (I used to jump out of my skin with games like Slenderman) and of how much I grew to be "brave" in the matter, like yourself.
