  • In the past, technical innovation has brought us game-changing trends such as progressive geometry, 29in wheels, mullet bikes, stealth dropper posts, single-ring drivetrains and internal frame storage. All things we now take for granted.
    But, for better or for worse, what are the trends we’re seeing influencing bike design right now? And what are the future developments coming over the horizon?
    Those are the questions we’re going to try and answer in this video.

    I just finished riding my e-bike with my VR headset, automated breaks and self turning cranks. It’s 10 bar linkage meant I could not feel anything. It made it so easy I could focus on buying my next bike instead of thinking about riding.

      such low tech. i tried the neural link fr prototype, i thought i broke my limbs when i tried a triple back-flip on the redbull rampage site. but thankfully i was just on my couch, when i remove the link. my heart beat maxed at 192 bpm though.

    I rode a gas gas ecc6, with the sram brose auto gears yesterday, it was brilliant, especially the coast change

    I would add the rise of e-bike specific components. Mostly marketing in my opinion ...and again SKU bloat at each brand.

    The headset routing doesnt affect removing the fork in any way, neither does it affect adjusting stem height etc. in most cases, rhe only situation that it adds complexity is replacing the geadset, but how often do you do that, honestly? I service mine once when assembling, replace the facotey grease with marine grease, that lasts me abount 2 years with a low quality headset or a lifetime of the bike with a quality one.

    So some mopeds will sport gearboxes now? And you'll need to change the gearbox oil yearly? Think they will come with SatNav, heated seats and cruise control soon? ;D And its not Analogue Bike, its Mountain Bike.... ;0

    On certain road bikes routing cables through headsets results in pulling the gear cable when turning the bars! Sleek looks are nice but not at the expense of practicality.

    If the industry doesn’t reduce the number of offerings then prices will never be what they should/could be. Additionally, some brands will be going away…..

    Been waiting for MGU or similar to get an ebike. Let’s see if more brands adopt it but I’m ready to invest.
    Till now, when riding ebikes my main issue was the load on the chain.
    With MGU you can put a BMX chain and just forget about it. Also suspension design can shift to a higher pivot.
    Just take my money.

    The evolution of design produces optimum configurations. That's why most new bikes often look alike. The lightweight ebikes appeal to dedicated riders with all of their advantages. It's the recreational uncommitted riders that can enjoy the peddle-less power fully.

    Press fit BB needs to go away, along with head set routing.

    As a mountain biker and motorcyclist I would draw certain comparisons. Ten years ago, super sports bikes started to have rider modes, abs, traction control. Now even mid priced mid range commuter / starter bikes have it all too as do off road bikes. The rate of development and release of motorbike engines has reduced whilst the number of sensors - 3 axis IMU anyone? - and electronics, screens etc increases each year. Most motor bikers will never use or benefit from these facilities whilst road riding but “it’s nice to know it’s there” justifies the expense. Or does it…? Ride safe alll!

      Good point. One key differentiator is that most high end mountain bikes are basically toys for enthusiasts, while motorbikes are (we’re guessing) mostly still a practical mode of transport for many.

    i think another trend you skipped is that more and more local bike shop will be going out of business due to the unnecessary complexity of bikes. ebikes especially. no one will be able to fix these things and the only options will be to return them to the manufacturer to get a replacement.

      We get where you’re coming from but not sure this will be case. Certainly hope not. Very few dealers service suspension on-site - they send them to specialists. In that respect motors are pretty similar. Plenty of other bits on an ebike that can be done in a bike shop.

    6 bar rear linkage was suggested and I'm days away from patent filing a 6 bar front linkage and have no idea how to introduce it cuz everything prior has been a joke... tell me how to invite criticism!

    Putting the possibly least reliable component in the same sealed box as one of the most reliable is hardly progress. I only say possibly as the cable routed headset may well be more unreliable.

      @@MBRmagazine in a weird way perhaps .. I’d rather have neither routed headsets or a motor locked up in a box with a gearbox. Not that I’m a huge gearbox fan but they do seem reliable if the oil gets changed..

    the obsession with lighter this and that is more "addictive" than power . The weight difference between a carbon frame and an aluminum one is negligible on a full power bike .the motor easily overcome the extra weight with an aluminum frame .
    the only riders that are concerned with weight are the super fit younger crowd that like to do Kamakazi downhills , massive drops and aerial acrobatics . most people that have e MTBs ride cross country ,commuting and shopping . aside from that ,why pay more for less

      I don't know. After reading the comment sections on bike sites I am starting to think it might just be easier to go out and ride the #%& thing.

    As things go, a bike with automated shifting would be a turn-off for me. Without alternative configuration, I'd probably go for another bike.

      The auto-shifting is only an option on both Shimano and SRAM. You can use the gears normally.

      There are people who also only drive manual transmissions in cars, but take a look at the modern options. Not many even offer a MT anymore and those that doe you pay extra for. Won't be surprised to see the trend in mountain bikes. Eventually those who grew up on cable gears and no index shifting (which had haters too saying it wouldn't be accurate enough or adjustable and need extra maintenance etc) will phase out of the market and the new generation who knows no different will be asking why would I pay more to shift worse than a computer.

      yeah , when bikes were bikes . with all of the unnecessary tech today , it's hard to find the bike under it all .

    “Environmental concerns in bikes,” is the dumbest thing I’ve heard of especially when you consider cars, trucks, & SUVS have had a renaissance in huge gas engine popularity even in the craze to go to electric. The bike industry should focus more on affordability and less on sustainability given all the benefits of cycling to the environment.
