Tissue Culture is also known as micropropagation. It is the artificial repriduction of plants in vitro (in glass). The glass has a nutrient medium that supports development. It is important that the plant material must be in aseptic condition.

Viral disease is a major issue. Farmers normally control the vector carrying the virus or use other preventive measures. Some scientists found out that when a plant is infected by a virus, it is not evenly distributed in all parts of the plant. The viral load is lighter towards the growing tip of a plant. So, they excised the tips of plants and propagated them, they discovered that plants generated via this method were clean (free from viruses) this was how meristem culture as a method of obtaining clean plants was developed.
