    That is a MASSIVE solar setup. I guess what you had there was a step down DC to DC converter to get 12 volt from the 48 volts system. Wouldn't have said no to a system like that in my offgrid cabin. But I have so many trees here. I am in the woods. I am charging 10 105 Ah batteries at a time with a generator, so they last for a while with lights and the computer. For airfryers and such I use the generator. The system is looking great. How many banks did you have to rob to buy it :-)

  • @millomweb
    @millomweb 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    4:45 I get the feeling that it's an Australian system.......;) Or you mounted it as an Aussie system. I'd have gone for a much steeper angle for the panels. I'd have them 'tuned' for winter - so they make the most of the low sun. I'd look at output as a function of angle of incidence - clearly 90° is going to give max output. So, do you want max output at the winter solstice ? Probably not - so I'd suggest (completely guessing) that you pont the panels directly at the winter solstice sun and then tilt them up another 20° more. This should give useful power at midday on the solstice and much better results at other times of the year. Better still would be able to vary the angle for the time of year but it's more important you make the most of the light in winter than get far more power than you need in the summer.

    • @haydenroberts7061
      @haydenroberts7061 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s a NZ company we got the system from, but I’m not sure where they import from. Set up for the best winter sun at the moment. I’m yet to see how they go in summer and the angle I need. But because I spend lots of time away from home in summer, even with the panels in the winter position, I’m expecting to get more than enough power that I need.
      The cabin gets it own smaller system and I’ve built that panel on a tilting frame so I can adjust at the summer peak. Currently it’s a lot more vertical. But that all in another video. 😄

    • @millomweb
      @millomweb 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@haydenroberts7061 Of course, if you wanted to go max posh, you'd have a suntracker system - not only follows the sun round through the day but at an optimised angle :)
      What fun I could have if a builder said we needed a new roof ! We currently have a more or less pyramid roof with a chisel point (akin to a twist drill tip). The new one would be optimised for solar ! Rotation and tilt.
      But I'm having enough problem getting power back on in the garage. I've an E-N connection somewhere I shouldn't have !
      Quite amused by your 240V out from inverter in red/black/green-yellow - our 'old' wiring colour scheme before we went brown/blue. The wires I'm working on are red/black.

  • @demus8757

    @2:04 This whole setup was not complete with the famous Ikea tool? It sure looks like you can use a new one. LOL. Seriously, I love what you're doing and how you're doing it. Carefully engineering it first and then build it. Great job.

  • @andrewdebbiebridge7205
    @andrewdebbiebridge7205 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Will you be able to alter the angle of the solar panels so you can get the best angle for both summer and winter?

    • @haydenroberts7061
      @haydenroberts7061 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The ones on the container are currently fixed. We are away a lot in summer, so I’m expecting to still get enough power for my usage even in the winter position. But time will tell. The cabin gets its own solar system and it’s panel I have built on a tilting frame, but that all in another video. 😄

      For a given amount of power the current is proportionally lower, which makes the batteries more efficient.

    • @haydenroberts7061
      @haydenroberts7061 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The more amps you require, the higher your base voltage should be.
      12v runs up to about 1500w 240v,
      24v runs up to about 2400w 240v and
      48v for 3000w 240v.

    • @johnkey1682
      @johnkey1682 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      to clarify my statement. Battery capacity is usually rated at a current equal to 1/10 or 1/20 of its capacity (C) ie 100Ah battery is 100Ah provided you don't discharge at a rate greater than 10A (0.1C) there is a derating curve for currents higher than this value. So by increasing the voltage and reducing the current you are making the battery more efficient.

    KAREN &HAYDEN, HELLO, So now I see this LARGER solar system , on the CONTAINER, but there is a smaller solar on a pole, what does that one do ?
    So how is REESE, ? Everybody seems well , stay well , enjoy the day, 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇺🇸🇺🇸

    Is Hayden a electrician? FYI viewers, Hybrid inverter from Gridfree legally requires a sparky.

    0:15 Familiar territory - RCD plus overload power switch. I have similar but for 3 phase. You'll see it all when you start watching my vids ;)
    Except yours isn't an RCD !
    You ought to have an RCD on your 240V supplies.

      @@haydenroberts7061 Just watched your solar/inverter installation vid - why not use your own channel for these and promote it via Karen's channel ? If I had your e-address, I'd have sent you a pic of the panel I'm putting together for my generator.
      Been working on the garage power again today - pulled to bits another of my father's wiring bodges. At least I'm seeing a way forward with it now.

    • @haydenroberts7061
      @haydenroberts7061 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s only circuit breakers on the solar system, yes the 240v has RCD and circuit breakers. A set for both the incoming power from solar and the generator.

    • @millomweb
      @millomweb 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@haydenroberts7061 IMO, RCDs ought to be installed as far upstream as possible. Is the solar 48V-60V ? I presume the solar's just for charging the battery that feeds the inverter. So RCD should be the first thing after the inverter on 240V and on the 240V supply of the gen.
      Out of interest, what's the chemistry of the battery - lead acid or something modern & fancy ?
      (Extra points if you spot my cleverness in this posting !)

    Daft you can put the panels on the container roof but not the cabin roof. 🤷

    • @johnkey1682
      @johnkey1682 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think Id rather have them on the container anyway. It's like a utility room.

    • @haydenroberts7061
      @haydenroberts7061 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think we could have put them on the roof of the cabin as it’s only a temporary structure like a shipping container. It’s just when you want to put them on the house roof, you need to tell the council to insure the job is done right, waterproofing, structural integrity etc.
      But like John Key said. It becomes a great utility room as it currently has all our white ware in it. The cabin gets its own smaller solar system.

      Yes, so annoying!! unfortunately my channel has been hit by fake AI comments with bad channel names and links. They are tricky because they keep generating new user names, so it’s been impossible to block them all. And because they reply to comments, it’s sending people notifications, as you’ve experienced. I’ve tried to Google what to do and the answer so far is to ‘wait for TH-cam to fix this bug or loop hole’. A few other channels are also experiencing this.
