We did not have TH-cam back in the 70's..but this brings back great memories. I have to say...GREAT JOB!! Nice to have a buddies for life..doing these projects. Wish I just took more Kodak pictures of all our projects. Thanks for sharing.....
I have the same swivel seats and found out really fast to secure them with ratchet straps. Those clamps hold the seat in place but if you grap on as your standing they come flying off and you go for a swim. Just cut the hooks off the ratchet strap with a cutoff saw and leave the loop in the strap. Take apart you bottom clamp on the swivel seat and put the loop in the middle bar. I used a coat hanger and taped the strap to one end and pulled it under the seat. Now do the same with the back loop and ratchet it down. Wah-Lah! No holes drilled and secure as a rock. Oh, the swimming thing I aforementioned........from experience! Have fun and Tight Lines!!!
Wow, might have to give that a shot. I've noticed they do come a bit loose whenever we're cruising over some wake. Never thought I could go for a swim tho🤣 Thanks!

Front casting deck idea for the leg room is nice. I like it. I just got a 1040 Jon... Like today. So I need to see what I can dream up with a shorter boat - I'm making notes! Nice build guys!
Thanks for watching, hopefully you got some good ideas out of this! It all depends on your usage. For example, you could replace the storage hatch on the casting deck for a seat mount if you prefer to have an elevated seat at the front of the boat. Or you could even turn the hatch into a makeshift livewell. We love that the jon boat allows for so much flexibility and creativity when it comes to modifications. Good luck with your build!
@@TheReelStrike "We love that the jon boat allows for so much flexibility and creativity when it comes to modifications"... I could not agree more. Hey guys great job on the boat. I have a 14 foot panga that I'm upgrading. I like your idea for the rod holders. I will definitely use that idea. And also the floor mats are good idea. Keep it up. My boat has a 15hp but i want to upgrade to a 25hp.
Thanks! The great thing about these small boats is how easy it is to customize them. I'm glad you got some ideas for your boat. Good luck with your build!
I was wondering how you dug out the flotation foam from the back bench seat in order to install the rod holders? How were you able to get the foam out thru the small hole that you cut? Was there also foam in the front seat that you installed the hatch in? Thank You! Excellent job with your video!
nice. small casting deck kept the boat light. 6hp motor gets it on plane. whats not to like? and... nicely edited video. good job all around. congrats.
In general, the TI units are faster in response to inputs. This is seen when quickly switching between sonar, downscan, chart, and split screens th-cam.com/users/postUgkxeAxH15LxhjGlg5-CRYqjTGTEH0tbY4vk recommend The Hook units will show some lag on button pushes and screen switching. The big ticket item though is maps. If you install a mapping card such as Navionics or the free C-Map Genesis which has a lot of map detail, then moving around the map with the cursor or when running down the lake can lag significantly on the Hook units, but is seamless with the TI units.
Just got the same boat as you guys a few weeks ago. Stoked to put some work into it. Y'all gave me a lot of ideas, thanks! Just curious, are y'all close to being maxed out on the weight capacity? I think the max weight is 480lbs
With 2 people and gear on the boat, we approach that 480 lb limit but we haven't had any issues. Floats well despite some of the cutting, and is still incredibly stable. If you're curious about speed under load, we've run the boat at 13 mph at around the 400 lb mark, 5 mph slower than our tests with 1 person and no gear (About 175 lbs). The boat's definitely been a great investment for us, and we hope you enjoy yours too!
The mats are rubber kitchen mats that are custom cut to fit the boat. We bought them at Home Depot, but you can find some variations on Amazon. There's a link in the description for one with good reviews, but feel free to browse around. We haven't had an issue with traction after fish slime and water cover the mats, either
Attwood for the swivels and Wize for the seats. Overall, they've both been great. The seats are comfortable and the swivels clamp onto the jon boat benches snugly. Some people have told me they've had the clamps pop off of the benches of their boats before with enough wake, but we haven't had that problem before. As far as durability, we wash both after each outing on the water and store them afterwards, so they've held up nicely
After almost 2 years, the boat has held up great. We use it almost exclusively in saltwater and we haven't noticed any issues with the boat itself or the engine. After each use, we clean the boat with soap and water and flush the engine. We also store the boat in the shade with a tarp cover, and the engine indoors. We were initially skeptical, since we always thought jon boats were more of a freshwater thing, but we're really enjoying going to docks and saltwater canals for some inshore fishing
We got it from Home Depot and cut it to fit the boat. Conveniently the mat is 36 inches wide so it fits the width of your boat perfectly. Here's the link: thd.co/2PHIzUg
@@TheReelStrike Awesome! I just bought my 12ft Jon boat, 6hp Suzuki 4S, and Trailer yesterday. I'm excited to start my casting deck and Storage hatch. Thanks for posting this video up. Helped me decide on my fishing rig.
With this design, probably not. The hatch in the middle catches on a thin wooden lip, but it might not be strong enough to hold a mount, seat, and person sitting directly on top of the lip. But with some thicker wood for the lip it might be possible
The mounting equipment usually comes with the seat, not the swivel. If you already have a compatible seat then all you'd need to get is the swivel and you're good to go. You can refer to the links in the description to see exactly what gear we used if you want to do some more research
Other commenters have shared with us scary stories of that happening. Luckily we haven't had too many issues with the clamps, but we try to be careful with them when out on the water. Thanks for the concern!
Swivels: amzn.to/39q4oS9 Seats: amzn.to/30JSs9Z Just a disclaimer, we'll get a small commission if you purchase the swivel/seats from those links. Both haven't held up as much as we wanted to in saltwater, but they still get the job done. Thanks for watching!
This setup has worked great for us. We usually fish in saltwater canals and close to docks, so it's perfect for us to fish areas that would be tougher with a bigger bay boat. The casting deck has held nicely. I'm usually standing on it 2-3 hours at a time and no signs of cracks. The 6hp engine is fast enough to get us to and from spots quickly, but slow enough to keep the ride extremely smooth. Since this video, we've installed a fishfinder and transducer and we made a video about it if you'd like to check it out. Overall, we're extremely happy with this setup given our preferred fishing habits
It depends on the conditions on the water. Some days when it's choppy the seats come a bit loose but we've never had them completely lose their grip. Some other commenters have told us that they've ended up in the water from the loose clamps, though. My advice would be to secure them as tightly as possible and don't go too fast when it's a choppy day. We weigh around the same so you're in a similar position as us. But like I said, we personally haven't had many issues with the clamps
You didn't want to mess up the "structural integrity" of the boat by drilling 4 screw holes in the benches to mount the swivels for the seats. Then you drilled big holes into the aft bench, and removed flotation foam for rod holders. Hmmmmm...... I guess I'm missing something....
The point we were trying to make was that we wanted to keep drilling to a minimum so that the boat would be easier to sell in the future. But we still wanted to add the mods that we'd make use of (Front hatch and rod holders). We could've also drilled for the fishfinder (Added later), casting deck, and seats, but we found ways to add those without driling. More than a year later the boat still floats and we're catching fish
