- In the second installment of Rhythm Roulette, Mass Appeal linked up with Grammy award-winning producer 88-Keys. From a Steve Martin standup record with no music to a hardcore noise metal record, 88 wasn't given much to work with but stuck with the challenge. Watch out for more episodes to come.

This is probably the realest episode I've seen.
I think this guy really deserves a redo those records were pretty terrible...
I know 88 Keys is super good too, but these records
Galen Aguilar Yeah dude got snubbed. You can tell he wasn't felling it either...
man got a comedy sketch as a track lmao. sometimes the odds just against you
Yo give 88 Keys a redo we all know what this man is capable of.
if he wouldve slowed that shit down wouldve been groovy as hell
+GODBODYJONES - Was thinking the same thing! Kept waiting for the guy to slow it down, to see if got funkier, but nope.
Every producer has their go to equipment there are no rules on equipment you use its about the man behind the machine!
I heard a couple of things he could have sampled and created a beat for. Plus he should have used that loop of Steve Martin saying "I was born a poor black child"; that would have been dope!
Exactly
To be honest...I think producers are too restrictive and to hard on the rules they put on themselves for samples and making hip hop beats. I low key hate that shit. All these phantom rules? Fuck them. Just make music. Like there is a part that played from the martin record, where dude was like "was born poor black child". Bam. Right there.
And that beat could be magic 88 keys. Fuck that modesty...knowing your track record you could make the shit work. It could bang.
Lastly, I'm gonna download both the ones he didn't use and I'mma make some hot shit. No rules, fuck the rules.
Jdilla would kill rhythm roulette if he was still here!
hell yeah! He picked from a lotta dollar bins anyway
Ramzi Badwi ye man, its not what you sample, its how you sample it - Lord Finesse -
He'd probably make like 7 beats and tell the cameramen to come back the next day for the other 7.
?uestlove said in an interview that him and Dilla used to play this game all the time. Dilla could make a beat out of damn near anything.
i know Jeremy! i know! dont remind us...
he kept it extra real, i appreciate that
Everyone hating on him, Go peep Thieves in the night- Blackstar and understand he produced it. Do your homework, this cat is a raw producer he merely didn't have much to work with.
No one's denying that he's had some classics in his resume...it's just that he didn't come through HERE.
he said fuck it hahaha @ 3:22
End product sounds very mailed-in considering who made it. He visibly wasn't feeling the process from the start. Everyone has those moods, sucks his happened right in time for rhythm roulette day. There was potential for greatness here and dude had a defeatist attitude before leaving the store with his slim pickins. Sounds like enough material count have been harvested from sampling at 2:36 alone, by both time stretch and pitch shifting through filters to make a complete beat before even messing with the envelope itself.
I love that the comments are supportive of the guy, instead of just complaining about the poor picking and the beat.
dope. I did a track with 88 keys years ago. Love to see this here.
They gave the man lemons and he could not make lemonade to save his life...
I sensed that 88 Keys didn't even try, he seemed very not into the experience... from the footage i heard many sample ideas and on the drum pad that baseline could of gone soo many ways.
88 problem and records weren't one.
You know you're talking about 88 Keys right?
Anton Gllie yea doesn't
He got the toughest hand out of anyone, eat shit
He wasn't gonna be able to show show case his skills with those shits lol,he dope but i wouldn't of even finished the challenge maybe if i had some decent tracks to sample so he got my respect
I plead the 5th? Lol
that steve martin record is amazing
Cool he made a loop
MORE RHYTHM ROULETTE PLEASE. dopest producer series ive seen
It’s pretty cool how 88 Keys is so loyal to the Polo Ralph Lauren brand. I think he’s got major style.
He is not a beat maker that can make something out of Midair.... The moment he said "I Bombed" I knew his heart wasn't into it..
its rare when you like a beat more than the guy who produced it. its not rare when you like a beat more than the youtube commenters, but, it is actually a good sign.
so he made a loop
MIKE WING 😂😂😂😂
I think that this beat is some abstract hot fire, I like it.
big ups to you for making it work w that basura lol fire!
Wish it was longer, 88-Keys so fucking smart with the beats!
88 got dumb discouraged. That's his fault. I'm pretty sure there is some banjo joints on that Steve Martin rekkid. Anyway, the bass line was dope.
Blogspierre I thought I was the only one to think that. This is a challenge, so you're supposed to find the diamond in the rough and I don't even think he took the time to fully listen to all three albums.
Its funny, i think 88 is a dope producer but honestly i thought those records were dope as far as something to sample from. I heard many ideas with just the little bit you let us hear on the video. Seemed like he just wasnt that into it.
The beat was aheight... but even with time lapse footage... 88 didn't really take the sounds too serious... I use to battle back n forth with dilla, back around 'Fantastic 1'... (man I'm old)... dilla was totally innovative with his and I was with mine... the things we both had in common were, neither one of us used breaks (in the traditional sense) and neither one of us SAMPLED ANYTHING KNOWN... to the average music listener, let alone Hip Hop Heads...
If you are truly a 'sample artist'... you can use ANYTHING (virgin ears eliminates any preconceived notions, as to how, a sample should be used)... I could kill 2:18 and 2:35 and even use the SM sample waaaay better... DILLA WOULD HAVE totally DESTROYED those.
Chuck Turnher lol you used to do beat battles with j dilla I'm callin bs man
blerch jodd a. 2nd d.j. to break 1stDown on Mixtapes in College (Got my copies from Phatkat... cuz I know dude).
b. Met jaydee thru Phatkat... We'd spin some breaks when he was around campus (I play'd 3 beats, he was feelin' um, went back and forth b4 he did shows heavy, I have 6 of his unreleased tracks I am tryin' 2 get permission 2 release, with my 11...)
c. w.t.f.a.y. (you soun' like a jag-off fan that can't believe somebody actually knows... YOUR IDOL... XD) (honestly dick, I ran wit and had 2 dodge killers in highschool and college... I've met/know/and still know more so-called celeb's than you would dream 2 meet if, they had a reason, 2 even meet you.)
d. don't be a b.a.t.-boy (bitch-azz-troll)... Build or be content bein' "Customer" bcuz, to tell you the truth, I'm an Investment Banker now, I can, could, and would, NOT mind, droppin' a few racks, comin' where YOU are and beat' the Shiite OUTTA'yuzzzzz XD... Did it in the streetz and in the office... DISRESPECT IS NOT TOLERATED, ya punk-azz-beyatch and I'll put money on it.
In closin', the only bs roun' here, is that retarded bitch-baby, they breached outta ya mutha's azz, they day you were born.
Have a gud one XD...
Bruhhhh, Idk if your just or telling the truth but you gotta understand, when I hear somebody talking some shit about how they used to be peers with somebody like j dilla, my first reaction is bullshit. No disrespect if your telling the truth, but i wanna hear some of these beats you claim are so fucking great before I believe some random assholes internet ramblings
Chuck Turnher
my head's noddin. dont be ridiculous, shits funky
bassline and drums hella on point. not as bad as everyone is saying
The struggle is real bruh 😂
Thanx, I will check it out. I think my studio has a Mackie endorsement
at 2:22 had some potential.
That beat sucks
To be fair he had fuck all to work with
man he picked up some shit samples, but the end result really wasn't that bad considering what he had to work with.
+Gab S No excuses. Look at what Oh No did with 10 minutes of terrible N64 games.
I think it has potential
Rad Cowley dude that’s madlib’s brother that’s like +40 in beatmaking ability off the rip 😂😂😂
lovin this shit. keep em coming, MassAppeal.
Yooo anyone know what sampler/drum machine 88's using?
where is 9th Wonder?
That is a great question....they need to get him
Come on that Steve Martin record that's not fair they should have give him another record
Good start
I like this beat. It ended up with a very original/non-traditional vibe.
There is music on Steve Martins Let Get Small. Banjo. It's my favorite comedy record. The shit is funny.
Steve Martin, being the banjo-playing fool that he is, would love to see someone say what you did. LOL As you probably know, being a Steve Martin fan, banjo is his thing.
Funky! I fux wid it for sure. Can hear J Elec, Ghost & Talib on it.
He pretty much mailed it in. I don't think he really tried
"f*ck it." haha... props!
So I'm noticing the Fear Factory obsolete gold record did 88-keys have anything to do with that recording
Same!
That laugh at 3:26 tho haha
After a second watch.. He capped himself going into detail about what he could and couldn’t do. That’s why he bombed. Beat was aight tho but he could’ve did much better that what he did here.
He reminds me of Myke c town from dehh
Salute Fam! keep rockin
I love this show...I'd need a couple hours if I were on it though, and the director may end up intoxicated...
WHat kind of mixer is he using?
its built into the mpc renaissance
i loved that eerie synth. the beat not a head banger but definitely something worthy. the idea of randomly choosing 3 records is very creative though. i would love to see more vids like this!
lmao i own that steve martin record and he plays the banjo on it quite often, also a lot of one liners he could have sampled. w/e though
Yes, this is real boombap hip hop..this beat is 18 years old incredible....love Ye do the Diddy Dance...production by Kanye West and 88-Keys
I got that Steve Martin record at a fuckin good will yo. That's crazy
You guys need Jake One up here!!!
He did one already, made a dope ass beat off of a gospel sermon record...
And he did one as Tuxedo...
What the hell? He didn't even do anything with it? WTF was this
i thought 2:32 could've made for a nice & very unusual beat but it's very easy to say that lol
cool beat
Can anyone tell me what the hat that he is wearing is?
Was not a fan of this one. His lack of energy killed it for me.
Umm it was done fast and 88 was lazy.
Really wanted to watch this video but before you know I had freestyles a galore. Really though, freestyled the whole video.
What board is that?
can you get dj kaytranda?
you picked up garbage and turned it into gold dude. i wish i had creativity like you
If 88 was actually playing Russian Roulette he'd have his brains on the wall.
The beat was good for the material he had to work with though.
How can I enter?
His beat was not that bad. Espicially considering that one of his records was a COMEDIAN concert album, and a second (out of three by the way) was by a nondescript group/person
that joint grooves, what you talkin bout? given the challenge, not bad at all :)
88 keys is low key nice. take in a song called Trains by consequence. Kanye was heavily influenced by 88 keys and no ID vice versa.
I liked that beat
Great job!
Bruh he didn’t even try
Charlie Heat made a beat from a
broken needle
Who made the intro music beat, now THAT shit was hot! BTW-to the DJ 88 keys, a piece of advice-you probably shouldn't make a beat that you don't "fuck wit'" as a representative of your skill and style, because what's the point then homey?
Hey, Massappeal, what's the name of the background intro music beat puh-leaze ? Thanks.
he flipped it for what he chose
At least now i know Top producers use the Akai mpk to...lol
i would like to rsonist on RR. he's got such a distinctive sound and a unique way of sampling i think it would a pretty dope episode.
Diet coke brought me back here again 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
ayo 88 keys, GEEK DOWN
This Intro, bro.
That beat was dope as fuck, wouldve loved to hear it slowed down kinda chopped and screwed
lord finesse should play this
in another universe, "Rhythm Roulette: J Dilla".
Haha that look at 2:50
who remembers his early work with beanie sigel
No energy from this producer at all. You know what type of show this is from the beginning!!
Been my man since "Don't Play" by J Live
This guy is a genius..those records were wack but he made a dope ass track out of it..88 keys I take my fitted cap off too you..
Dj Quick and Kidd Capri
And dat nigga Daz
:D Good Vibes here!!! ONE
It's always sad when they don't fuck with it
He pulled Steve Martin, doa
in germany u mind be have problems when u call ur self 88 bro
Thank you 88 Keys for The Death Of Adam and May-December
Did 88 find those drums on the record?
I know he wasn't feeling his picks but i thought the purpose of this show is to make something out of nothing?
They shouldn't have put this out
