Thanks for this. First excursion into fly fishing after many years of course angling. Have the gear now need to get out on the local resevoirs to start, (Somerset, down the road from your visits to the Tone). Been searching YT for beginner stuff don't know why this video did not pop up sooner. Not a lot out there from basics, showing flys and retrieves so this was really informative.
Very worthfull information‘s. If I‘m around at Rutland once, I would take a guiding day with Rob’s organisation for sure. Steve from Petri-Heil Fishing Magazin Switzerland
the shoelace minnows are brilliant .,... back in the day I used to tie really active flies from the material on a green "Static Wand" my mom used for cleaning 😊 .... she didnt like that ... 😆... omg but the action is amazing and the color mimics shrimp/prawns ... a little set of barbel eyes and some sinking line .. great for beach [salt - tropic and flats ]
great show but here is a tip for everybody ! when casting walk just a few inches into the water and your retrieved line will fall into the water not on the rocks :)
Great video. Any suggestions on August fishing? Too late for buzzers? Too early for fry? Would those tadpoles be any good now? Off to Draycote this weekend and going to try my luck on big water for the first time from a boat.
Best to contact Rob Waddington of Rutland adventures. He is up to date on all those waters with his various contacts, look at the comments below and you will see his name there
Black flies.Montana,Tadpole, anything with a bit of longer marabou in the tail.Quite fast tweaks back, with a pause in between should get some interest.Don't forget to try the occasional really fast strip back, but only once or twice, and don't hammer away at the same spot. Make a couple of fly changes, and if no interest, move.Only about twenty yards, then spend 15 minutes and move on again.Good luck.
Hishaam Adam Hi Adam. The season is unusually mild and buzzers and nymphs are working now, slowly retrieved on a floater. Rob www.rutlandwaterflyfishing.co.uk
Great video. I've had 3 failed boat trips at Rutland. Very frustrating when it costs £40 a pop and everyone else is bagging up. Time to get a lesson I think.
+James Turnell Check out the guide Rob Waddington. He has done fly tying for our shows and we have films up fishing with him. Check our trout playlist. He's in there and is sure to point you in the right direction.
On buzzers, with a strike indicator, can you let them float with the wind and waves, and no retrieve until you get bored? The state has just socked our 2acre, no boats allowed, Lake with 2000 trout, which we're required to keep if we catch 'em (so sad). So I want to be able to compete with the worm and power bait guys.
This method which we call 'the bung' is deadly for all Stillwater trout when they are cruising looking for buzzers (chironomid midges). Fish buzzers underneath and leave it. Now and again, retrieve the line a foot or so to lift the buzzers and let them fall. Purist fly fishers don't like this as it's similar to floatfishing but a similar method is used on the hallowed waters of the river Test in England, a purist fly water, but there, they use a Klinkhammer dry fly with a coloured post as a sight indicator and a small nymph underneath it...deadly! see www.rutlandwaterflyfishing.co.uk for more info.
