This is the film adaptation of the *very* successful stage musical that was adapted from a novel by the same name. It's one of the most successful Broadway shows of all time. It has a very broadly appealing story with great music, and it maintains an affectionately revisionist attitude toward the 1930's film.
Stereotypical?? Wait - that’s the whole point of the story - it takes the stereotypes set out in The Wizard of Oz and turns them completely on their head.
Remember, the so-called Bad witch in the 1930's Classic wasn't bad. Remember, she was after the ruby shoes that belonged to her sister who was killed by a house landing on her. Those shoes were special and Galinda gave them away to an innocent girl named Dorothy when they should have stayed in the family of Elphaba. It wasn't fair but I liked your reaction to the burning effigy. A few viewers expressed disgust. I did too. I hear you on the stereotype.
So Wicked is based on a completely different version of the Oz story than what the old Wizard of Oz movie used. Kind of like how Ever After or Ella Enchanted are both based on the Cinderella fairytale, but like, completely different interpretations of it. The "Wicked" play/book/movie uses a different interpretation of the original oz books than the MGM Wizard of Oz used. So like, even though this IS technically a prequel story to the Wizard of Oz and an origin story of the Wicked Witch of the West, its not the same version of the character. This version of Oz is also a LOT more political and one of the major themes is how corrupt political powers use disenfranchised/minority groups to drive fake, fear-mongered narratives to stay in power.
