    Pre-industrial societies were not rich enough to support a population of criminals in a jail, like is done today. Execution was the only way to deal with most criminals. However, the executioners' efforts over time resulted in a culling of the socially un-cooperative, and contributed greatly to the growth of civilization, and the settling of disputes through non-violent means. It also, however, left a society of soft men, susceptible to domination by men who don't share their appreciation for civilization.

    The belief among Christians of the time (and even among many today) was that you not only had to be buried intact, but buried in consecrated ground in order to have any chance of immortality. The punishment was therefore not just for this life, but for the next as well. Up until the abolition of capital punishment in the UK and some Commonwealth countries in the 1960s onwards, it was the usual practice to bury executed felons in a pit of lime, in unconsecrated ground within the prison walls and with no individual grave marker. Since the abolition of capital punishment, many have been exhumed and reburied in official cemeteries.

    • @LittleKitty22
      @LittleKitty22 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The poor still get buried like this. Three on top of each other in an unmarked grave, outside of the official cemetery - that, or cremation even if that's against the religious beliefs of the deceased. That's a pauper's grave, or public health funeral as they call it now. They also take the body apart first for organs and for science.

      Fortunately neither the governments nor false biblical teachers decide what happens to an individual’s long term future.
      They cannot prevent the forgiveness of sins bought through Jesus’ blood. All those who’ve died have paid for their sins with death. (Romans 6:7, 23)
      On this very day Nisan 14 (March 24, 2024), we celebrate the anniversary of his death for all mankind. Luke 22:19

    New York City carried out the death penalty in the 19th century. The city used hanging as the form of execution. It did little to discourage crime. This was the period of The Gangs of New York. Most of the gangs were immigrants, they had little fear of the police or any consequences.

    Human anatomy was a brand new disciple at this time. As mentioned there were religious beliefs, mainly Catholic, about the body needing to be whole so getting cadavers for dissection to understand internal anatomy were rare. Grave robbing and even murders to sell bodies took place. Look up Burke and Hare.

    When it comes to murders, The BMA was a necessary good…not a necessary evil. For offenses that did not result in death, it went too far. Funny how history repeats itself! We’re seeing a lot of violence in metro areas that are glorified in hip-hop/rap music. We need stricter laws (to include the death penalty) to stem the out of control violence in the big progressive cities, but the irrational fear of being called “racist” is making that difficult.

    • @PLuMUK54
      @PLuMUK54 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      However much that might be true today in developing countries, it was not the case during the Industrial Revolution.
      Many workers were forced off the land that they had farmed for generations by landowners who wanted to maximise profits through the expansion of the Wool Trade. They had no choice but to move to towns, or go to the colonies.
      There was an expansion in the population, which, together with the loss of farm land, made it impossible to find work in the countryside.
      The poverty of the industrial workers came about because wages were very low and unregulated. They had to often pay high rents to the factory owners or private landlords. They also had to start paying for food instead of growing it themselves. This food was often sold by factory owners, using the factories' own currency, which were called "tokens", and could only be used in the factories' shops called "Tommy Shops". The "Tommy Shops" usually charged high prices for adulterated food.

      @@tdesq.2463 I might have to try those Brown Sugar Pop-Tarts again (haven't had them for a while), the ones I had were Frosted Grape.
      I don't believe they sell Folger's Pioneer blend at my nearby store, but I will have to try that sometime if I am able to find it around here.

    I'd love to know if crime went down because of this law or because the lot to the 'common people' improved, removing their need to commit crimes. They no longer had, 'nothing to lose'.
    That's like claiming Giuliani's draconian policing laws in New York back in the 80s is what reduced the crime rate rather than the fact the economy with taking off with the crime rate decreasing even before he passed the laws (still took credit of course).

    The need for torture and public humiliation has nothing to do with deterring anything--it's sociopathic indulgence in the pleasures of hypocrisy, schadenfreude, and narcissistic scapegoating. It's entertainment for the repressed and disingenuous.
