    Watching someone draw is almost as much fun as doing it yourself. And very motivating.

    What a truly great tutorial this was Al, it ticked all the boxes. I have learned so much from your demonstrations of your techniques. So thank you so very much for sharing. To anyone looking for tutorials in pen and ink you really can't beat Alphonso Dunn's second to none demonstrations. They stay with you for a long time after you watch.

    The way you break the drawing down to its essence is great, and unlike other drawing tutorials you reference back to older videos to show how everything connects. The hardest part about drawing is learning how to see, and I think you do a great job in explaining that process of seeing.

    I love the texture on this. The white and black ink marks are so elegant, the gray background worked so well. I would have worried that the charcoal powder would gum up the pen points but this is great to see that it didn't! I haven't had much success with white gelly roll pens, they dry out fast.

    "If it looks like a scribble, you make that scribble"
    Excellent, subtle point (15:00). I haven't fully internalized that aspect of drawing yet, but I find that that is a common mistake made by beginner artists - the desire to replicate it exactly as it appears, versus the uses of various shapes and suggestive marks to create a more pleasant and agreeable whole. Great video!

    awesome video.,. i did not know that you could purchase whole jugs of charcoal powder like that.. i just use the graphite shavings from my Staedtler Graphite pointer.. when its got plenty of graphite powder , i pour it into another container.. and i got some powder.. though it has a blueish tinge to it cos i also use it to point my blue leads .. it still works wonders.. almost like a night sky kinda deal... but your use of the white pen, was brilliant..

    ***** Personality, what I don't like about the jelly-roll pen's is that you can't render too much ink on top of the previous white. I'm not sure if I'm using them wrong, but maybe it's the ink or the same pen peeling off the fresh white ink if you render too much in the same area. Besides that flaw, it's a pretty good pen.

    Great video! I have a question for you about the role of photographs when teaching (high school) drawing. I am trying to form my approach or policy regarding this. On the one hand I understand the danger of making drawings that are flat when copying from photographs. My thought would be to balance out use of photographic references with drawing from life and from the masters and teaching students about how to analyze what they are seeing in terms of form ect. My thought is that photographs can play a part but I would discourage students from "mindlessly" reproducing an image but rather analyzing and seeking to understand what they are drawing...as you are doing here. Do you have any suggestions for a policy regarding photos in the art room that would be broad enough so as not outright ban something that can have its uses and that students may be attracted to for inspiration but at the same time establish appropriate limits and a sense of balance so as to protect students from forming bad habits that could hurt their progress in developing drawing skills? I would appreciate your opinions as I admire your style of teaching art. Thank you!

    • @alphonsodunn
      @alphonsodunn  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shana Smith I definitely understand that dilemna. Photographs can be good and bad for students. I would do a demo and require that whenever they use a photograph they produce sketches in which they break down the subject to simple forms so that way you can ensure they took the time to study the subject and apply concepts to simplify its structure
      hope that helped a lil :-)

    Most museums do allow photographs but discourage tripods or ban them completely. Mono-pods are generally OK.
