@97thrbanAirsoft first one is light and flies further (500m effective range), it is the PG-7VM, 70mm diameter, 360mm penetration. Totally effective against small fortifications, brick houses, light armor and old tanks like T55, M48, M60... And sensible areas of modern tanks (roof, flank). Other is the most used, PG-7VL, 93mm diameter, 550mm penetration, less range (300m eff range), works fine for all mentioned above, with more power and and ability against tanks.
It depends on rocket used. Some orckets are cheap. But there are really sophisticated ones, which can penetrate most MBTs. The launchers itself is a simple tube with an electric trigger

I've fired it, and it is a hell of a lot of fun. and it doesn't matter if the RPG-7 deals more damage if you cant hit a target at as close of range as in 3:55 in this video, I'm guessing that's at about 200 meters.

Its primary purpose was anti armor, not anti personel as many people think, although they do have special anti-personel rockets.

And yes, the RPG-7 has to be close to the tank (less than 100 meters according to wikipedia) to be sure to hit the target, but it can easily happen in streets. But more modern RPGs can have far better results too...
