  • In part 3, the Fender Player Series Telecaster gets new Fender Twisted Tele Pickups & an Obsidian Wire Custom 4-Way Telecaster Wiring Harness. The process wasn't all as straight forward as I'd have liked, but now the Tele has been kitted out, it sounds incredible!

    Cool. I have a butterscotch Player Tele with these “Plus-Deluxe” upgrades by me - Vintage Fender bridge and tuners, Wilkinson's compensated saddles, Mojotone ’52 Quiet Coil pickups, Lucky Dog gnarly knobs, angled-switch cover-plate, and a three string tree to stop the g-string ring behind the nut. It's a great guitar. I love the satin back/glossy top maple neck. For me it just blows away anything else under a grand. And I prefer it to the American series which I can afford to buy if I wanted to.

    Cool vidéo my friend - that's exactly what I was looking for: Twisted Tele with 4 way switch mod. :)

    Thanks so much. I really enjoyed watching. I just watch all three videos. I was also inspired by DBG to upgrade my Tele. I have a 1989 Honer Professional TE Custom Tele. I have the same Obsidian Wire 4 way kit, Hipshot Locking Tuners, and Fender Tele Noiseless Gen 4 pickup set. Just finished the upgrades but have ran into a similar problem with switch positions 1 & 2 sounding the same. I will try to see if I have a similar problem on the slot on the control plate to what you experienced. Thanks for the great video!

    • @MattsGAP
      @MattsGAP  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Christopher, Glad you enjoyed the vids. The gen 4's are the only fender noiseless pickups I haven't tried. Yeah the travel of a 4 way switch is further than a 3 way switch. Thanks for watching.

    Thanks for the video! I saw the whole series. I also own a player tele and been wanting to do the obsidian wire and twisted tele pups so this really hit the spot, especially cuz I had read in an Amazon review that the twisted tele pickups are not compatible with the 4 way switch! I had lost hope, but you proved that comment wrong ;)
    One thing that would be great to see is a video in which you go into detail about how to dress the neck and fingerboard. In your second video you put the fast sped up video in the background, it would be good to see more details.

      Hi, thanks for your comment, it's cool to get constructive feedback on my vids. I have the raw footage from all the vids still, when I get time I will edit it together and put it up. I'm also re-fretting a Squire atm and putting together a short video on the process which will be out when it's finished. I have wondered whether anyone is interested in a Crimson guitars esque maintenance and setup style video series, i'll happily make them if folks want them. Thanks for watching!!

      Guitars Amps & Pedals thanks for your response! The crimson guitar esque video would be fantastic! Looking forward to them.
      Thanks again for this series of videos, very useful. I’ll come back to them when I start with the mods on my guitar.

    I had the same issue with the same harness in a 2015 mim fsr tele (With texas specials). The length of throw on the 4 way wasn't hitting the last switch (control plate too short). I filed the metal switch itself down on the side that wasn't contacting just a few mm and solved it. Also the reverse control plate had to stay reversed as the control cavity didn't allow room for me to drop the harness in normally. I do love that 4th position in series though...

    • @MattsGAP
      @MattsGAP  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I later found that this is a common issue, it took me a while to figure it out, I think Obsidian Wire should have published a notification warning of this potential problem. It is easy to fix though, Thanks for watching!

    hello! I bought these same pickups and I would like to know at what height did you leave the neck and bridge? thank you!!

    • @MattsGAP
      @MattsGAP  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I set the heights at factory specs, then played and listened for Balance and any unwanted overtones or wolfnotes from the pickups being too close to the strings. I usually end up backing them off a little. I don't measure the heights after that, Factory specs are usually pretty close, but i recommend you use your ears for the final heights. Thanks for watching!

    I already installed these same pickups in my telecaster, I heard that the sound of the neck pickup sounds slower than the bridge pickup and they are at the same height... do you also hear it like that on your guitar?

    • @MattsGAP
      @MattsGAP  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The neck pickup in a tele is typically quieter than the bridge pickup. The Twisted set has a better balance than most though I think. If yours have very extreme volume levels then something may be wrong, but the bridge pickup should have a big beefy tone compared to the neck.

    • @Rodguille1
      @Rodguille1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MattsGAP I feel the biggest difference in volume in the note E of the sixth string. I saw on the fender page the appropriate height for these pickups and the twisted ones don't appear… I don't know whether to go by the height of the vintage pickups or the standard one… which one should I take as a reference?

    • @MattsGAP
      @MattsGAP  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Rodguille1 standard measurement should be fine, listen for unwanted noises, and lack of sustain, these happen when the pickups are too close. To balance the two pickups I set the bridge to where I like it and adjust the neck to suit. If you want to get more volume out of the neck pickup, lower the bridge pickup and turn up your amp. It can take a bit of tweaking to get it to where you want it, I always take a screwdriver to a gig and do it there.... loud volumes help to highlight the differences.

    Your mods have pretty much given you a Baja 50s spec without the S1 for out of phase in 2 and 4.
    Not criticising, just an observation.

    • @MattsGAP
      @MattsGAP  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah pretty close to the Baja Tele. It does make me wonder whether it's worth the time and effort upgrading the Player, especially when it cost about the same overall as the Baja. I'd do it again though cause I enjoy doing the upgrades almost as much as playing the guitar afterwards!

    Amazing video!
    Will you recommend me an ash or an alder body for a partscaster tele build with those pickups?

    • @MattsGAP
      @MattsGAP  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd go with ash, purely because I prefer the look of ash on a tele. I don't think it's going to make a massive difference either way tbh. A friend of mine has a custom shop tele with (ash body/twisted tele neck pickup) and theres very little difference (if any) between mine and his.

    Hey bro, is the bridge pickup of twisted tele can handle hardrock and high gain metal?

    • @MattsGAP
      @MattsGAP  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      100% hard rock. I don't play metal though, I'd imagine it will!

    • @TheSuperSatana
      @TheSuperSatana 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just went for the very same set up, obsidian + twisted tele. The bridge is hot hot hot. I load it with a Strymon Sunset hi gain settings (A+B channel) and it delivers a great metal tone. It's hard to explain, but it's heavy yet undoubtedly single coilish. Zero muddiness. Absolutely love it. Gotta figure out the right settings for the fourth position (humbucker sort of response) but I absolutely love it now. I just can't put the damn thing down
