      Paul Barden A comment that just states «No» or «Wrong» is of absolutely no value. You can, of course, go into the Why of my comment being wrong (which it both is and isn’t - it is a humerous take on the situation. Of course they want to grab the cash: They’re a business! But of course that’s not the sole reason the up the prices: Expanding production costs them lots of money. They want to expand without loosing their profits, hence price increase

      @@helgebrekke People are getting bent out of shape over speculation that it’s going to be a 30% increase on all products, and that simply isn’t true. I spoke to a retailer here in the Pacific Northwest a couple of days ago, and I asked specifically about one example: a roll of Tmax 400 in 35 mm (36 exposures), and I was told that the roll of this film will increase by exactly 1 dollar, so it goes from $6.50 to $7.50. That is not a 30% increase.
      Secondly, does nobody remember Ilford‘s price increase in 2018??! The last time I bought a box of 8 x 10“ HP5, it cost $109. After the price increase in 2018, it cost $129. I don’t remember people getting all bent out of shape about ilford’s price increase in the same way that everybody’s getting all upset about this Kodak increase. Remember, all of this is just speculation and hearsay until you actually see prices on the shelves. You’re getting all upset about information you don’t actually have.
      Finally, I would like to remind everybody that photography has never been a cheap hobby, and it never will be. Prices of photography materials today are very much in line with what they were 20 years ago considering inflation.

    Not a smart business move for Kodak. Most intelligent businesses assume the extra charges for production. A 5-10% increase would be fine, but that means they should offer some sort of loyalty program like Polaroid original. Smh Kodak

  • @noxXxnocti
    @noxXxnocti 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    The fact that Kodak is hitting their consumer film stock the hardest, especially ColorPlus, seems like a short sighted move. An average increase of 10-15% would have been a good balance of the impending sales drop and increase in production that comes from hiking the prices.
    I'm definitely going to shoot film a lot less and ration my Kodak film stock.

    I saw a price sheet/breakdown of each film stock last night and most films won't experience that big of a hike. A few do hit that 30 percent mark but most are well below that. I personally shoot t-max and p3200 a lot and I'm not at all worried about it (and I'm relatively poor). Don't let it dissuade you! If anything, use it as an opportunity to select your compositions even more carefully. If a photo you absolutely love costs 6 cents more than it did before, I can assure you it'll be worth it.

    I had been shooting about two years digitally before my wife’s uncle who is an architect with a passion for photography handed me his Minolta XG-M that he had owned since the mid-80s. He had a 35-70 lens on it but I immediately purchased a 50mm 1.4 as well. This is still the only film camera that I own to this day and every film photograph I have ever taken was on this camera. I’ve done a lot of research on it and it is an incredibly rare camera for anyone to come across and most people have not mentioned it. I love your work bro and the photos that Elliot took of you and your wife are absolutely wonderful! I’m always a big fan of yours and enjoy every video that you post but when you posted a picture of the XG-M, I couldn’t help but walk 10 feet away to where mine was sitting and pick it up and give it a big hug.🤘 Bottom line is keep doing what you’re doing and I hope that one day due to the price increase we will have more options for generations ahead of us like hopefully our children to take such a passion in film and have more options. 🙏

    This seems incredibly short sighted. If the 30% price hikes are true this will put people off, leading to less demand and all this new machinery will therefore be redundant. If more film is being produced they will make their money back in the long-term?

      Funny how everyone is suddenly an expert in how to run such a big company. Last spring I had to wait almost 2 months to find some Portra 400, which means Kodak was leaving money on the table. When you can't meet demand, it only makes sense to raise prices and invest in production.

    • @tomdivasion7724

      I think the issue (well at least my issue) is that the cost of the new machinery is being passed on to the consumer rather than being absorbed by Kodak. Ultimately I will pay the new prices because I want their film haha. My worry is that it scares off people and accelerates the end of production #paranoia

      @Fabian personally I can't stand the colors of Gold and I mostly use Cinestill 800t, Portra 400, Fuji 400H, C200 so that definitely increases my price for film. I seriously wish I had your cost for developing though. Developing only where I live is $10.
      Scanning: I do have a flatbed scanner that I use for some restoration work and scanning contracts but the images look seriously harsh to me, not to mention low-ish res. I do have access to a friend's Hasselblad flextite x5 scanner but that thing is ridiculously slow and requires frequent intervention so it's rarely worth my hassle (about an hour per roll of film). I could also "scan" with my digital camera on a light table but again- that's a pretty laborious process- not in taking the pictures but in converting to a positive image.

    Camera manufacturers are however not manufacturing new film cameras. Film cameras are being recirculated from old. This could mean they don't see the market returning large scale or could just mean they want us to buy their digital cameras.

    It's been a while since I purchased Kodak film. I recently picked up a bulk roll of TMY. Paid ~$100 through Adorama. I then did some searching for the last time I purchased the same film, which turned out to be like 7 years ago. Same thing, through Adorama, cost $60. That's a bit of an increase of that time period.

    I’m a high school student. A roll of 35mm Kodak CP200 is already $6.20 here. I’m not sure what Kodak is thinking, but jacking the prices up will make it unaffordable for both professionals and casual users of film cameras. It’ll just reverse the increasing interest of film photography and result in a guaranteed loss of business. I’m kinda unsure as to whether I should continue pursuing this because it’s getting really unaffordable.

    I couldn’t agree more when you said to stick with one focal when beginning photography. I started learning with a digital camera and an adjustable lens; as a result I just fired off photos without engaging whatsoever. Not too long ago I picked up a 35mm camera with a 50 mm lens and due to the slower process and fixed focal length I feel like I’ve progressed twice as much in half the time. I’m far more intentional with my photos now and I’d recommend everyone to do the same.

    @johnparker2853 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have shot film, processed, and printed in my darkroom since 1979. I also shoot digitally. It is about a 50/50 split for me.
    Film price when compared to my wages. Seem to have gone up equally. At least in my experience. And in my local area. Good film, and photography has always been an expensive hobby. I have weathered all the increases over the years. And I will accept this one. Film price increases are not exclusive to Kodak either. Ilford has raised prices just as much. Bulk film prices from both companies has more than doubled since the 80’s. Not to mention chemical, and paper prices.
    The digital side of my shooting. Has made photography very affordable. I shoot with a Nikon D700 purchased in 2008. And develop with Lightroom. Yes there was an investment in my camera and lenses. But now my digital photography costs me just over $100 per year for my Adobe subscription. In 40 years of shooting. I can honestly say that digital photography is as cheap as it gets. Keep in mind that I still shoot many rolls of film, and print in my darkroom.
    For the younger photographers out there. The argument that digital is more expensive. I have shot the same camera for 11 years. While technology has evolved and gotten better. It did not make my camera worse. It is still just as relevant as the day I bought it. The images it produces have not changed. So the “I have to buy a new camera every 2 years” argument is ridiculous.
    That is a self imposed cost.
    As far as the other costs with digital photography. I would have a computer in my home. Regardless of my photography. So I do not factor that cost.
    One last thought from an old timer. There is no right or wrong way to enjoy photography. It is a way of documentation, and personal expression. But I will say that if you shoot film. Then scan your negatives. You are wasting an incredible amount of money. To ultimately, in the end create a digital image.
    Film prices, and chemical costs will always increase. I will always have to absorb that increase. Because some of my images benefit from shot on film. And developed in the darkroom.

      I shoot on film because that was how I got interested. In college I had a darkroom at my disposal, but no longer do. I shoot film now so in the future I can hopefully print some of those, and in the mean time I enjoy developing at home and having my stack of negs. Also wanna start developing e6, so I can project my slides.

      I don't think it'll kill their business. As Matt mentioned, they can't keep up so the price hike will improve profits without impacting overall sales. What it will do however, is make film a non-democratic hobby (it kinda already is) and most lower to mid-income consumers will have to drop out leaving it to the wealthy. If the price hike is indeed 30% I will likely go back to digital and hold onto my favorite film gear in hopes that Kodak will drop their prices again once their business expands (fingers crossed) again.

    • @coldworld5
      @coldworld5 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Z Z I mean. I’m not trying to argue but what you’ve said is a bit of an oxymoron( assuming you know I don’t think the price hike will kill the whole Kodak business completely. However, film is already an expensive hobby, it’s novelty not in the slightest necessary for a photographer in this day and age. Most *hipsters people probably shoot Kodak gold, it’s cheap and gives that classic look ( I think it’s terrible personally ) when that goes too high to buy average film shooters will just go to digital. Kodak is ultimately going to slowly kill film photography because they’re not just going to drop the price by 30% when this doesn’t work out. Kodak nearly went under once due to being short sighted, looks like they will put the nail in the coffin.

One look at the price of the films and chemicals in the UK made me fall backwards. I used to pay about £3.10 for a roll of Acros or T-Max. Now they want over £10.00 for expired Acros and over £8.00 for T max. The less I say about the price of chemicals the better. This is just being greedy on a grand scale.

    I heard that Kodak have invested a lot of money into completely refurbishing a production line to meet the rising demand for film. This is the reasoning beind the price hike and, to be fair to Kodak, if this is true then I don't mind paying extra. It's been a long time since Kodak were in a position to invest in their production facilities and it can only be a good thing for the Film Photography community. Kodak is still producing cheap film, look at the price of ColorPlus 200. A 30% rise on that is not going to be much pain on my wallet.

    Make no mistake, have no illusion. It's pure breed on Kodak's part why they are increasing their prices especially by so much. If theirs sales are so good then they should plough the profits back into the business, like every other business does.

    My 2 cents: I think it's incredibly foolish to raise prices out of the blue, and even more is to clearly state that the customer has to pay the price so that a company (which is already making a lot of money thanks to US, the people who brought film back from the dead) can make MORE money. It's a win win situation FOR THEM. We will pay more from 2020 on, and we'll keep on paying a higher price even when film will go out of fashion again (either cos it has become too expensive, or because people moved on).
    I'm very sad about this whole thing. I feel betrayed as a customer.

    If they need to raise the price to a level that is sustainable, so be it. Accounting for inflation, right now (December 2019) film is about the same price or cheaper than it was thirty years ago when Kodak was selling hundreds of millions of rolls. I'm honestly surprised it hasn't happened earlier, Fuji did it long ago and Kodak was holding off with small incremental increases until they literally could not afford to keep up with demand. It sucks but I'll be buying less Starbucks

    Matt I’ve noticed over the last couple of months it is getting harder and harder to find film. Go to B&H, most of there film is on back order and has been for awhile. I use to buy a lot of Kodak ColorPlus on EBay for $3 a roll, now its closer to $5. There are many film stocks I’ve wanted to try but can’t get my hands on unless I go to EBay and pay a premium as of late. It seems like some people are buying up all the available film and selling it for high margin on EBay like it’s a newly released Play Station or something. I don’t want to pay more either, however I might not get the chance to pay more if inventory doesn’t improve for all manufacturers. Not a Kodak issue only in my mind. People might shift from Kodak to something else, like Lomography for example. Oh wait it’s out of stock everywhere. We are going to see price increases across all manufacturers. Kodak is dictating their prices increase. Supply and demand will dictate everyone else that is not investing in increased production. Bottom line, in the short run prices for all film is going to go up. Time to get a bigger film fridge and start hoarding I guess :) Thank for the Video.

    I stopped shooting film due to the price of gear being inflated to ridiculous levels. I sold my RZ67 kit and bought a Nikon Z7. I would love to continue with film, especially I would love to get into 4x5 but its hard to invest that much money into a medium that has an uncertain future and on gear that may last a lifetime or may fail the day after you buy it. If say a Mamiya bought out a brand new Mamiya 7 or similar camera and say Nikon bought out a new Nikon Coolscan, I would be all over it.

    I think the Kodak price increase will only be temporary. Yeah it could be killing their own market share but their interests are for continuing the market so I think it'll be a necessary expense for now. Obviously I and almost everyone don't want to pay more for the film but it will be something that will have to be for now. I don't want Kodak to go away so if I have to pay a little bit more to keep them alive then so be it.

  • @piotr.czechowski

    2:40 it doesn't work that way. If they produce more they sell more and therefore they earn more. Increasing production doesn't mean increasing costs. It's the opiste way. The more you produce the less it costs you per unit.

  • @KidxVicious
    @KidxVicious 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    That justification from Kodak is complete BS. They are increasing the price because demand is going up and they see an opportunity to make more money. Companies have to improve infrastructure and expand all the time. It's part of the cost of doing business. Jacking up your prices across the board is not required just for basic expansion, unless you're operating on razor-thin margins (meaning your business is on the brink of failing).
    I wish people would stop acting like companies are doing things "for us" out of the goodness of their hearts. They're doing it to make money. They're not your friend. You only matter to them inasmuch as you can give them money, or advertise their products. So stop doing their damage control for them.

      The closest I can think to justify the price would be a clearly specified temporary increase but even then, those costs are typically played out over the lifespan of production and should ultimately make the film marginally cheaper. What a terrible argument for Kodak- shooting themselves in the foot a little bit, especially considering how expensive development has gotten in recent years.

    Matt, I love you, really, I do, but repeating the Kodak line that more demand = higher prices Because it's Hard to make more film....Er, it's a manufactured commodity. More volume = increased economies of sale, INCLUDING bringing new production online. They won't increase capacity Without factoring that in.
    The reason Why pricing increases in some markets for some products eg Housing, is when there is increased demand for a finite supply, so demand drives up prices, pushing the most price sensitive out. It's the opposite of what's happening with electric cars, for example. By looking around you can see what is really happening, and put together a much better theory of why Kodak is raising prices:
    1) Fuji did it
    2) Kodak has a giant pension hole (I Think that was the reason why earlier in the year there was talk Kodak would have to sell off it's film business, right? Either that or a giant loan is maturing. Correct me if I'm wrong, it's NYE and I might have started on the sweet, sweet stuff already)
    3) They're price gouging because they think they can (and see above).
    Happy New Year - Looking forward to watching your vids in 2020 X.

    Yeah in most every single other business in existence buying new machines to pump out more volume of product either lowers or keeps prices the same. Clearly their able to do this because demand is really high right now and that means profits are as high as ever. This is a bunk excuse and it’s not going to sit well with many photographers.
    Now if their making more and more re-released of older film stocks then I can understand a price jump, bringing stuff back from the dead is expensive.

    Honestly i can understand their move from a business perspective. they probably know that a lot of people dont care about the price that much. the price elasticity is just low for their films. also compared to others like fuji their prices are low. they control a big share of the market with products that are loved and are not replaceable for many. Honestly just some economics for a quasi-monopoly. works for some of their products probably. i wouldn't exchange portra or ektar even with a 30% increase. i don't think you can look at this from a very mobile consumer base. it's a luxury now anyways with cheap digital and mobile phones. people are probably ready to shell out more money. i didn't think they would make the consumer films more expensive but i guess amateurs care even less about the price

    Film is for hobbyists. The general population uses their cell phones for 99% of their photos. Professional photographers will use high end digital cameras for their work. That leaves film for only a very small percentage of people. Shoot film and enjoy while we can. If prices go up a bit then so be it. I’d rather pay a bit more than to see film disappear.

    9:55 The Rules of Photography -- There are no rules, only self-imposed constraints.
    As for the rise in prices of Kodak film... I can't say that I particularly care. The types of film I use is fairly diversified among the different manufacturers, I'm fairly judicious with how and when I use film, and I'm already used to Fujifilm perennially raising the prices on their slide and color negative film. I wouldn't say I use any emulsion simply because it's cheap -- people should already know that, all in, film is not a cheap medium. If a film stock has a look I'm going for, I'll buy it, even if I know the price went up a few dollars per roll.

    So I actually have done quite a bit of research on this price increase and people are A.) over reacting & B.) misinformed.
    So here’s what we know :
    Kodak is doing UP TO a 30% increase on all stocks. The stocks that are going to see it the worst are the entry level or consumer grade stocks like ColorPlus, Gold, and Ultramax. The stocks that will likely be increased the least will be the Portra & Ektar line. They will still likely go up but not by as much. The supplier that they buy materials from has been operating near maximum capacity for almost two years now. Fuji doesn’t buy material from this supplier so their prices should be largely unimpacted. The reason Kodak is hiking prices (and I support this btw) is so they can slow demand down a bit for their supplier. Their supplier needs both time and resources to expand their operation to accommodate demand.
    Think about it this way, if they don’t increase price, it will lead so more stocks being out of stock more often and for longer periods of time, ultimately leaving for it the market in the hands of Fuji. Time has shown the Fuji doesn’t exactly act with the consumers as a priority.
    While paying more for film isn’t fun, I think I’m this case it’s a necessary evil. Your $3.29 roll of ColorPlus will now be $4.49, you $3.69 roll of Gold or Ultramax will be $4.99....not the end of the world. TriX & TMax might go to $6.29 or maybe even $7 a roll...again not the end of the world. I stocked up (pun intended) a few days ago and I might make another order on BH today before the day is done but it’s only a few extra cents per shot.
    Honestly let’s just be happy film is still around and growing. Not just existing but GROWING. We have a lot to be thankful for. Instead of behind mad at Kodak for having to hike prices up to adjust for demand, let’s be mad at labs who literally charge $25/roll to develop. That’s Highway robbery. I’m so thankful my local lab is very reasonable and crazy quick.
