I noticed when you removed fuse b1, your cluster stayed on. When I removed fuse b1 my cluster stayed off when starting the car. I cant seem to get my car properly bled
Hi R&R. Great video thank you… I am going to attempt this myself and was wondering where you bought your coolant from please? I am based in UK. Thanks.
Hello! Great video! Can you tell me if this is the same procedure when you change the transmission oil cooler in a 987 ? I already changed the transmission oil cooler but I thing the system was not properly cleaned. Thank you!
I think I have air in the system, I replaced water pump and thermostat as well. But now my car is getting hot. Got it up to 96 degrees celsius and fans wouldn’t come on. I’m so frustrated with it. Any help would be great.
Thanks for this - was great to meet you yesterday at the Abingdon track event. After putting my boxster round that track a few times, temperature was getting up towards the 100 mark, so thinking it might be worth giving this one a go over the weekend, especially since mine appears to have been doing less than 1000 miles per year from 2003-2017 (crazy right ? total mileage was 35K when I bought it, on a 2001 model) When you've tracked your boxster, what were the sort of temperatures you'd see when things were within expected ranges ? I've really got no frame of reference for this stuff, yesterday was my first track day. Thanks again for so many great videos.
Was great to meet you too! Thanks for your thoughts on the channel and thanks for watching! The temp gauge didn't move when i tracked mine - stayed in the middle. If yours is rising it could be leaves behind the bumper blocking the radiators. This is a common problems and wet leaves can cause the radiators to rot. Ben at Burner's Cars has a good video on this. The coolant should be changed every 5 years as the rust inhibitors stop working and the radiator will rust from the inside. So if it's been 5 years its worth doing. Be warned it's a big of a pig getting the lower radiator hoses off. I did it in winter so maybe a bit easier when it's hotter in the summer? Also I'd advise getting ramps for the back of the car as it's safer than trusting jack stands. The pink ready mixed coolant from Euro Car Parts is the one to get. Let me know how it goes! How was the car on the track?
Thank you for the video. I got 2001 boxster And is overheating. I replace the water pump. Thermostat. And bleeding process but still overheating. Fans. Works. At low and hi. Speed What else do you think can be thank you
Road and Race not yet But I check the temperature with the temperature gun. And show fine both hoses The hose from the thermostat outlet. And the the water pump. The shows around 165. The inner and outer heater hoses too. When i start the car the temperature gauge start going up the right way And i got the scanner connected to it waching the temperature too . But gauge and scanner show the right temperature But the temperature keep going up. But not with the gun . When the gauge and scanner show 220 the gun. Shows. 145. No hoses show more the 150.
I dis the bleeding process but this car is 6 speed. Manual. I dont know if makes difference. On the bleeding process. Fans working at slow. And high speed. But 1 thing that I notice is. After the coolant star boiling up. From the bleeding valve All the temperature in the hoses chance to 190 210
Hi, Don't you need a special coolant vacuum filler? I've been told by the dealership, otherwise that the radiator hoses will collapse???? Thanks in advance
Thank you for the video! I was wondering if removing those hoses is really necessary if we do a flush with distill water? IMO the coolant will be diluted anyways. BTW sad to see you're selling your Boxster :(
+Allen Hsu The hoses hold about half the total coolant so the first flush with water will only get about half of what's left out. You'd have to do two or three flushes to get most of it out. I guess that's less hassle just takes more time. Yes, I'll be sad to see her go but don't worry what I have next will be good. Trust me! 😁
great video! I will change the coolant on my boxster soon. Do you know where I can buy the drain plug and the tool to remove it? I could not find it neither in eBay not in Amazon. Cheers!
Thanks Fernando. I got the drain plug tools from Halfords here in the UK. Do you live in the UK? I think I reused the drain plug itself just used a new washer. Porsche can sell you the washers.
Road and Race thanks for your reply! I live in the UK, I'll check in Halfords for the tools and POC Nottingham for the washers! Thanks for the advice. I got a quote from a POC for doing couple of things on the car but after seen your videos (and their prices) I decided to dyi ... will be a challenge but good fun ... thanks for the inspiration 😂
Hi R&R, can you remember what mix you used with that coolant, was it 1/1, 2/1 etc ? I'm looking at the same stuff and wondering what ratio mix to use for 18 litres ! Cheers.
Clarification on Porsche coolant; it is sold by the gallon and needs to be mixed with deionized water usually in 1:1 ratio unless you live in hot climate like desert. So Porsche coolant isn't really that expensive as you only need to buy 1/2 required but you will also have to buy water and mix it.
Different manufacturers use different colours. It’s best to go to their website and check, most coolant makers have a checker tool. Comma in the UK is the one I use.
At 3:05 you say that removing fuse B1 disables the instrument cluster (which is actually the case) but then in your video at 3:09 the instruments are all on. Have I missed something? In TH-cam videos everything looks so simple. Real life is different. No editing possible :-)
I just bought a little 986 and i want to undertake this task. I am looking to buy the washer needed for the drain plug to ensure i have new one however I cant seem to find the correct washer specifications. Can you help on this?
Good to hear you;re tackling this yourself. Sorry, I would look it up in the Bentley manual but I've given mine away. If you've not gone one I highly recommend it.
@Pierre Viljoen It's a 10x14x1mm copper or ally washer. I'm just in the process of replacing the front nearside rad after leak. So thanks R&R for the video been a great help. simplybearings.co.uk/shop/advanced_search_result.php?search_in_description=1&keywords=1+x+High+Quality+Annealed+Copper+Sealing+Washer+10x14x1mm+%28CU10x14x1%29+
Bleeding these is such a pain in the ass. Stupidly engineered cooling system. I can bleed my Audi in no time at all. The Porsche is more like a whole day of running, cooling, bleeding, filling, repeat.
Very well edited, great voice, and very great video to help out fellow Porsche owners or curious mechanics! Thanks for the great video!
Thanks mate. Glad it was of some help
Cracking job Neil, i'm a few years behind this Porsche game, but have a 987 now....
Thanks mate. Jealous of your 987!
Great videos and well explained. Can’t believe you’ve sold your Boxster. Love your videos and I watched them several times. Cheers
Thanks Andy. Yeah, sad to see her go. Have always wanted a 911 so maybe one for the future.
Yes, same here, 997 Gen 2 is my next target. All the best!

Neil, good job on another successful video! Helps perform my own maintenance with confidence.
Thanks Alec, glad I could help. Let me know what you get done!
Very informative....thanks!
Hello from ever warm Florida!
Just wondering what height are you ramps?

Great stuff Neil! Wish you weren't selling her, but hopefully it'll be something with a Porsche crest on it again.
+Stephen Overstreet thanks Stephen. Don't worry the new car will be epic!

Hi. Leaves can block the radiators - have you checked that?
Road and Race not yet

i put some blue liqiud to the rim.. is that bad and why? and what should i do?

+Justin Choi I did it the way it was described in the Bentley manual. Worked fine for me.
why do you have to remove fuse B1?
Pretty good video. Fast and easy. Good job! Love watching your vids
Thanks mate, glad you like them!

Hi R&R, can you remember what mix you used with that coolant, was it 1/1, 2/1 etc ? I'm looking at the same stuff and wondering what ratio mix to use for 18 litres ! Cheers.
I bought the ready mixed stuff so it was 50/50.
Ok, great. Thanks

just one question, at the dealership they told me to use only purple cap coolant, is that correct?

@@RoadandRacetv THANKS, GREAT VIDEO
Just wanted to say thanks. Really useful video 👍

Has the car been sold?
I've someone coming to get it on Sunday.
Ah, you make it look so easy! ;)
It's all in the editing....!
Another well done video. Thanks!
+Engleburt Thanks mate. Glad you liked it

Last time I changed mine, Volkswagen coolant was to the same specs. as Porsche, same company.
.......lovely nuclear pink.......HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.....classic....noce video, as always, thanks for your time.
Thanks mate. I try.
Bleeding these is such a pain in the ass. Stupidly engineered cooling system. I can bleed my Audi in no time at all. The Porsche is more like a whole day of running, cooling, bleeding, filling, repeat.
Yeah, it is a pain. There should be a drain plug in the middle of the car to avoid having to remove the hoses.
The background music is mind numbing
I swear my Porsche Boxster same model same everything but it does not have that drain plug
