I don't think being old is a factor. I'm in a tabletop group, and on Saturdays, we have a game set in an alternate universe of Power Rangers. Our DM is like 48 years old or something. We're all in our twenties, so we jokingly and in good humor call him 'Uncle Donnie' because he keeps mentioning things like "I remember when this first aired on TV back in 81," or "This was the bomb back in 79." Meanwhile, I was about 2 or 3 years old when Power Rangers came out, and some of the people in our group weren't even alive when that happened.
So yeah, I don't think being old is the issue.
