It's interesting how the last song "In The Whale" has that 80's sound that loops nicely back into "DICE" so that if you play the album on a loop it makes a continuous circle.
OMG you're right. I never tried looping the whole album before. Imma try next time

Watching this and reading comments over a year later…so now…Why does seeing you say Circle bring me to his ⭕️ album. Onew. Genius. Sounds like he’s been setting this up.

During the promotions, Onew was constantly saying his intent is to bring comfort and happiness to his audience, so keep saying comforting Umu!!!
Thank you for doing an album first listen and react, I was hoping you would! Onew is my ult, and I absolutely love love love the whole mini, my favourite track is On The Way (so happy he chose this as the coupling song for music show promos and we got to enjoy multiple live stages of it) followed by In The Whale (definitely due to the insane comfort that comes with the soft vocals and it’s meaningful as a fan song where he participated in the lyric writing).
As a Jjinggu/Shawol I’m horribly biased and I could listen to him reading the phone book tbh. Looking forward to his Japanese debut album which is coming out 6th July!!!
Among Korean fans I think Sunshine and Love Phobia are the most loved songs. I personally love Love Phobia for the kind of vocals I haven't heard from him. According to Onew, On the Way was the first song he ever recorded and was like the song that lead him to choose the other B-sides. It's like they're all connected somehow.
I notice that you don't talk about lyrics that much, but part of the reason I like "Yeowoobi" so much (beside the intriguing off-beat accents) is the intentional oddness of Onew's tone quality that matches the slightly-off-but-we-get-it aspect of "Your love takes me higher than I've NEVER been (2x), your love takes me high [higher in pitch!], BUT, your love takes me higher than I've never been." It's so cool. He really tried hard to widen his timbral and expressive range on this album.
the yeowoobi bridge is one of my absolute favorites of the year! it has such a dreamy and fantastical feel that i really enjoyed~
The shoegaze influence must be why I like Yeowoobi so much. Really enjoyed this mini-album!
Love how you reacted not only to Onew's voice and how he *attacked* the songs vocally, but also the technical aspects of the songs themselves (chord progressions, reverbs, and stuff) and how it all mixes together. I didn't know how to describe it before but that "reverb equals intimacy" was totally spot on.
Fun fact: "Yeowoobi" is literally translated as fox rain, or a sunshower. So it was really apt when Umu said "heavy rain" and "being underwater and gargling".
I like "DICE" but I LOVE "Sunshine", "On the Way" & "Love Phobia". The last two are OK, and when hearing them all together, I get a sense of what ONEW was going for with this album, but man, I've got "SUNSHINE" on REPEAT!!!

I’ve been listening to Sunshine nonstop since the album’s release but maybe Yeowoobi is my favorite, I’m still hesitating.

He wish was to do 6 differently songs. And In The Whale ends the album with another tone and vibe. He said he wanna to give comfort to people with this album.

'In the Whale' reminded me of a song by a band called We Are The Night called 'Snorkeling'; they both do a great job at capturing this underwater, murky yet refreshing, aquatic vibe. The songs are very different but I like how well the themes were executed
When UMU said that "In The Whale" sounded like a SHINee song, I immediately went, "Oh, right, Atlantis!" It has a similar vibe!!
I never would have expected We Are The Night to be mentioned here, but I totally agree!!!
OK I've seen both parts! you guys are great! I am not professional perfect pitch musician analysts so it's always interesting to hear those parts. To this normal person's ear and feels, it's just such a vibey album and I love it. Goes from bright to dark or day to night I guess, from the bright MV colours, beats etc and then to In the Whale, which is so chill and end of the night kind of song. He mentioned writing it for the fans, something about feeling safe in the whale, in your space. He's also mentioned about how he hopes his songs bring a comforting (takes a shot) presence.
For the track Dice, I think he prepared it with performance stages in mind, I think that's why you feel like he's holding back his vocals? He knew he would be dancing 'intensely' and still had to sing live. As for Sunshine, he performed it with Suhyun from AKMU (video on SHINee's YT page) and they both commented how hard it is to sing that song alone, so they did it as a duet.
Anyway, love the album, love you guys.
Thanks for reacting to Onew's Mini Album. It was a breath of fresh air and allows me to breath and be calm. The world s trying so hard to be relevant and pumped up - producing more chaos. But this for me is the medication my soul needed.....Thanks again for giving your inputs and appreciation where needed.

thank u SOOOOO much for mentioning shoegaze and parannoul. im personally a shinee fan but when i dont listen to kpop my go-to genre is shoegaze, typical indie japanese artists like yuragi. so u can imagine how excited and i was and how much my jaw dropped when onew dropped a song teaser for yeowoobi. a lot of other shinee fans were initially sort of weirded out by ghe sound but i immediately got it and it was so fun to see that u did too! and when u mentioned grain YESSS grain is exactly the word i would use to describe the shoegaze genre

i loooove the entire album and in a sea of chaotic, in-your-face, next-coolest-thing kinda comebacks, onew’s was definitely a breath of fresh air. it really WAS comforting, and chill, and was what a lot of us needed. i also feel it ties nicely with the sorta 80s vibe key’s album had… still an 80s vibe, just with a different style, if that makes sense. a lot of the songs, especially in the whale, almost felt lazy (in a good way), especially his vocals. it felt like we don’t need all this extra pizzazz, im just here to vibe and exist. it wasn’t what i was expecting from jinki but it’s DEFINITELY what i loved

I think the album is very cohesive, Onew described it as "a refreshing spring album" and he was able to express it very well. My favs are Sunshine, Yeowoobi and Love phobia.
I appreciate the reaction to Yeo... I didn't even know that sound had a name! It reminds me a lot of "Abandoned pools" or alternative bands I used to listen to before. Thanks to this video now I can say I like Shoegaze lol

My favorites are still Love Phobia and Yeowoobi. But Sunshine and On The Way are really close behind. I think what I like about this album is that I could listen to it in a loop, just chilling and vibing to it without being distracted from work. Like Umu said, it’s comforting and I love that.

Love every single song of this album 😍 So glad this time he chose to experiment with different genres of music 👍 My favourite track is On the way if I must but really, all 6 songs are incredible. Different but cohesive.
in the whale brings me a lot of comfort with just the minimal sound and jinki’s voice so that’s my favorite track. tracks that are rnb and on the slower side are usually my favorites from an album tbh so in the whale was just obvious for me

Love the reference to Parannoul. Onew's take on shoegaze was a kpop highlight for me this year for sure
interesting you mentioned shoegaze. now that i think about it, yeah it has a bit of shoegaze feel. and yes, sunshine is also my fave, followed by yeowoobi & in the whale

Did you know Hitchhiker played the guitar on Yeowoobi? Is it possible they recorded all the instruments first and then layered Hitchhiker's guitar by itself over them, which is why the guitar sounds so bold in the chorus? I just love the chorus so much, it's such an anthemic type of line, you can totally picture a crowd singing it (screaming at the top of their lungs?) at a concert 😄.

Concerning my favorite songs, I’m bumping to Sunshine at least once a day however I feel like Yeowoobi might be my true favorite for it touches me deeply. I’m quite curious about the name as it originally means ‘foxy’.

Yeowoobi (fox rain) means sunshower in english. I think it came from the folk legend in korea which tells about the marriage of fox to tiger, and the cloud who loves the fox, cry at the fox wedding day

Really enjoyed Dice when I first heard it and it's only gotten better each time I listen to it. Sunshine is also great. Love the tops Umu and Kevin are wearing in this reaction (especially Umu's).

I would like to know what you think on guitar version fo love phobia,... so the reverb is not there . I live Yeowoobi , brige, and loved to see how he recorded it , there a behind the redonging video and is so interesting. In the whale , is the one that hit me less on the whole album , even if ti has a emotional thing at lyrics level but I appreciate the quality of the whole album and the feelings that it brings , which is what at the end it seems the point of ONEW.
