Thrombosis
A blood clot (thrombus) forms in a vein or artery, which can restrict blood flow. The clot can grow in place or break free and travel to another location.
Embolism
A blood clot or other material travels from one location to another and gets stuck, blocking blood flow. A pulmonary embolism (PE) occurs when a blood clot breaks off from a vein and travels to the lungs.
