I remember the Megadrive was being sold in Woolies (which I seem to also remember being £199) and was in awe at the graphics, John Maddens footy being one I thought was epic. I asked my folks for it and got the Master System instead.

I would say in the Uk the Beeb was the actual rich kid computer, whereas the C64 would be more of the upper middle-class computer., kind of like here in North America, the Apple II was the rich kid computer around this time, whereas the early IBM DOS computers would have been the upper middle-class computers.
Whereas the C64 was actually one of the cheaper options here in NA (believe it or not)

Thing is about the advert for the Mega PC is it perfectly illustrates why you would be better off buying a separate Megadrive and PC, so dad wouldn't have to kick the kid off every time he wanted to work.

The MegaPC worked as a marketing strategy though, rather than buying a good pc without a Megadrive for similar money you instead bought an outmoded 386 (in 1993? Seriously Alan Sugar?) Fitted with what was essentially a Megadrive on a card! I know not 1 but 2 people that had one as a child, needless to say neither survived!

Brilliant video, the Argos catalogue and circling what you wanted then hoping it came was a ritual for us all back then. That Vic-20 pack was the first computer I had, though my mum bought it at Goldbergs. She was attracted to all the extras it came with over a 16k Spectrum at much the same price. I still loved it and continue to have a soft spot for the old Vic.

My first computer was the Vic-20 which my folks got me from Beatties in Wolverhampton. I remember the games behind a glass cabinet guarded like they were the crown jewels. My eyes used to glase over always wondering what the game was like, lets be honest most were crap but it was from there i had Matrix. The best game on the system and the first video i did for my channel.
Amazing the price difference from then, just shows how expensive they were back then.

My folks weren't rich (especially in 1983) but that year they did buy a Commodore 64. Dad always bought the best he could afford (usually by working a lot of over-time) so consequently we also had a Sony Beta-Max VCR. That thing cost a FORTUNE. Even the tapes were super expensive. Dad often tells a story when he bought a 30min tape for it that cost around £100 and came home from work one evening to find me as a toddler chewing on the tape like it was a teething ring. He managed to splice it back together though it ended up being an 23min tape instead of a 30min 😂😂

Ah, the 112 variations is referring to the Atari 2600 version of space invaders. It has a silly number of combinations of visible/ invisible invaders, different missile settings and static/moving shields - plus 1 or 2 player co-op / vs modes for each of those.

One afterthought on the Commodore 64 which due to its special chips like SID was a technically impressive machine for its time.
I faced the choice between a ZX Spectrum and the Commodore 64 in the early 1980s.
The ZX Spectrum could be operated with a reasonable cassette player and a regular TV. Both of which was present in your household normally. And that joystick interface also was a necessity.
The Commodore 64 could use its Datasette which had to be purchased separately but that did cost a pretty penny and it was slow beyond belief (300 Baud IIRC).
The 1541 floppy disk drive did set you back as much as the C64 already did. But IMHO it was the only viable option and pretty slow, too (2400 Baud IIRC vs. 1500 Baud of ZX Spectrum tape loading speed).
So, considering the excellent BASIC which got me into computer science, there was little reason to fork out my hard earned tutor money for the C64.
The Commodore 64 plus the 1541 disk drive are borderline homecomputing realms anymore when it comes to the costs of that system. 💰💸

I remember I'd just started work the summer before the N64 came out and had just moved to my 2nd job when it hit shelves and some of the guys at work were having heart attacks to try and get one. I remember them being sold out almost everywhere apparently, to the point that one guy bought one (off somebody who had managed to get hold of 2 of them) for £250!! I had gone off consoles after my Megadrive and was a dedicated PC gamer by then, so I had no interest in an N64. But for those guys at work, an N64 with Mario and Starfox was like the Holy Grail 🤣🤣

That said, the Megadrive Sonic did eventually get its own arcade version; ever so slightly modded with harsher time and no bonus levels (I think some other levels are missing too). It runs on MAME.

    1) PC/Mac In the late 80s and early 90s, name brand PCs were thousands of Dollars. The MAC II was like 6 grand brand new in 1987! PCs weren't much better, often breaking the 4000 Dollar price range.

Working people had more money to spend on things like Spectrums under Thatcher. VAT alone increases the prices 2.5-5% today. The overall tax burden fell to 28% in 1993. It was risen steeply since 1997 mainly in the form of indirect stealth taxes to 35% and rising today. Housing and energy costs are also much higher today. The China effect has made electronics cheaper

It wasn't the Atari 2600 JT, it was the 2600 Jr. "Junior". The 112 variations is Space Invaders, there really were that many variations, but that's really just lots of combinations, how many ways you can permute the options it had. There were some weird ones though like "invisible invaders", where you couldn't see the invaders til you hit them, cos... they were invisible!
The 7800 was in no way outclassed by the NES. The 7800 was better in quite a few ways, though it's resolution in full-colour mode was lower. It had a very nice graphics chip in it though, otherwise. It's a toss-up which is better, if the 7800 had sold as well as the NES, companies would have been able to spend similar amounts on creating their games, which they obviously didn't, you can tell by playing them that they were pretty cheap.

    • @SebsPlaceYT
      @SebsPlaceYT  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yeah I assumed it must have been a typo. Great comment mate thanks. I know a little about the 7800, so it's always interesting to hear other people's take on things, appreciate that.

    • @greenaum
      @greenaum 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@SebsPlaceYT Particularly, the 7800 wasn't limited by tile-mapping. It had a video processor similar to ANTIC, the one in the Atari 8-bit computer line, that could apply different parameters to each scanline, including changing resolution. The chip actually ran it's own machine code, in it's own language, albeit simple, but very versatile. In some ways quicker than tilemap, since you could change whole regions of the screen with just a few bytes.
The lines were bitmapped. That can be slower to move graphics around on, but it's much more versatile, and there were still sprites. You can very much tell that the NES uses a tilemapped screen, every game looks the same in that way. Much less variety than real computer games of the time.
Would've been nice if Atari hadn't considered 160 horizontal pixels to be a usable resolution, cos it really isn't, it's ugly. Good enough for the 2600 in the 1970s! It can do 320 though with colour.
Actually that's probably because the machine was back-compatible with the 2600, a foolish decision in retrospect, though if they'd launched it in 1984. It was officially launched in 1986 but didn't get any sort of push til a couple of years later when it wasn't good enough.
The sound is exactly the same as the 2600s, again '70s technology and awful. Also for compatibility, they should have just dropped that. Compatibility is also the reason the SNES has a crippled, slow, 8-bit CPU instead of a proper decent one like the Megadrive. In the end Nintendo abandoned NES compatiblity for the SNES, but the hardware is all in there, necessarily compromised, so third parties made NES adaptors easily.
It's interesting to read the technical manuals for these things online. STELLA.DOC is a classis for the 2600, and the 7800's docs are out there too. They were written by the engineers, for games programmers to understand the system, and it really gives you the thinking behind the machines. Even if you don't understand everything you'll likely still be impressed and illuminated by what's there. Gives you an understanding of the scene at the time in general.

This is what makes me laugh about the whiners and moaners of today's gaming.
Gaming today, has produced the biggest bunch of complaining idiots on the planet..... One thing they complain about is the cost.
In terms of hobbies, gaming is among the cheapest and that hasn't really risen in price very much at all.
    I am 44....
I remember games being between £34.99 to £44.99 on the NES
Mega Drive games i got with my parents for my birthday, we went in too Southampton city centre, Virgin Megastore and i got Madden and Road Rash on the Mega Drive, both were around the £45 each.
When you look at games on the Series X, PS5 today...... Unless you buy the big deluxe editions, games are between £39.99 and £59.99.
Iv'e been gaming since the 80's and the price of games has hardly risen from 1985 too 2024.
