Pontian Dance "Sera" Argonauts Komnini in Australia 1991

  • This is my home video of the Pontian Dance group Argonauts Komnini at "Pontiaki Estia" in Melbourne Australia 1991.
They dance the ancient "Pyrrhic" dance called "Sera". Made up of 2 sections. The slow start called "Atsiapat" (a name of a village in Pontos / Karadeniz - todays Turkey) and the "Tromakton" (meaning lively / scary) part. The name "Sera" comes from a village next to Trapezounta - Trabzon in Pontos (modern Northern Turkey) were it was said the best dancers came from (and still do !!)
Then 2 of the dancers break away to dance the knife dance "Pitchiak-oin" (Turkish for knife dance). It is mentioned also by Xenophon in his book "Anabasis" that 2 Thracian soldiers danced around the fire to entertain others, one pretends to be hit and is dragged off .....
This group has danced internationally all around the world, even seen at the Athens Olympics in 2004.
The first dancer is the dance teacher Christos Theodoridis (who also was the teacher at Dora Stratu dance academy).
Their names are christos theodoridis, leonidas, dimitris gourzoulidis, panagiotis apostolidis, nikos konstantinidis, giouras savinidis, kostas savinidis
On the Ndaouly(drum) is Theodoro Kotidis who is now a well know lyra / kemence player.

max … your stupidity amazes me. We are Greek, we were settled by Greeks and were and extension of what we consider “Ancient Greek” Our people look Greek and cook food like Greek food, we speak Pontian Greek and believe in the Greek Orthodox faith. Also Greeks aren’t Slavic or Albanian, we are Greek and always have been. And shut the fuck up about the insults on Greek culture, the way we write and our own Alphabet has Greek origin. Alpha is the first letter and beta is the second. Also the fuck is wrong with homosexuals? It’s a new world and homophobia doesn’t belong here so get the fuck out of this comment section you 9 year old who thinks he knows everything.

The different movements and the "sameness" of all dancers' movements, the Pants, the women s head dress prove the Thracian origin described by Xenophon in the Anabasis. These Pontiakoi are Thracians who tamed the horse, invented the pants and the wheel with spokes and who came from the steppes where they composed parts of the Rig Veda believe it or not. Documented by Frits Staal and BG Tilak in The Arctic Home of the Vedas. Thracians ARE related to Minoans and Hittites.

While there is a mix of Greek and Turkish cultures and it is difficult to always determine the origins of many things, one must remember that the Ottomans were a nomadic people that did not enter Anatolia until the 13th Century. Therefore any dance, food, art, etc., that can be traced to a time prior to the the Turkish invasions clearly can not be Turkish in origin.

Therefore, you can still believe that this dance is Turkish. This is probably what Turkish educational system does. Successful propaganda.

Even today it has tiny % of Turkic DNA. You have to know the DNA of all those tribes who eventually formed into the Greek nation and then spread this rubbish. The Ancient Greeks were not only people from Peloponnese. So relax and enjoy the fact that they were a mixture of Aegean and Anatolian tribes, including the local populations of Black Sea who also joined the Hellenic world sometime 2500-2000 years ago. turkish people always say that they came from middle asia. is this dance looking any middle asian? no. it has nothing to do with middle asia. so when they came to anatolia pontian greeks were already there and doing their dances. as turks were influenced by them they created their own version. after hundreds of years it's a bit turkish dance now, but definetely originates from pontian greeks. same thing happened in the caucasian region.
