- You Have to Rethink What GOOD Training is as a Higher Belt in BJJ
Good Training Doesn’t Just Mean Getting Smashed
This Purple Belt Associates Good Training with Being smase
In today’s video I answer a question from a guys who is a purple belt and 1 of the higher belts in his Brazilian Jiu-jitsu gym.
His question concerns improvement and hard training. Since he’s 1 of the higher belts during the rolling, he doesn’t get smashed like he used to. But when he looks back on his training, he was getting very good, very fast, when he was a newer guy and was getting smashed.
So his question is whether to move to a gym or change his training habits.
So in this video I talk about some ideas that could be useful for anyone in BJJ, but especially for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practitioners with a fair amount of experience under their belt.
Hope the video helps you.

If you’d ever like to train with the team and I. Check out my gym Derby City MMA in Louisville,KY.
Thank you for posting, Coach.
It’s a struggle, fending off the law of diminishing returns as we inch along toward the right side of the Bell curve.
Professor I just wanted to say thank you for your years of content. I'm a 40 year old purple belt and have benefited from your advises.
How long have you been training?
@@brewhaha515 since around 2016
Every single brown and black belt in my academy and most of the purples have something specific they are working on be it a submission, position or sweep or a particular combination of all three. My professor encourages everyone to always put a focus on developing your unique game.
This is all true. Learning and progress in any skill is not linear. The learning curve is usually pretty steep at the beginning, then it tapers off and further improvements are harder to come by.
When you think about it mathematically, assuming we start from the absolute zero and progress constantly your first training will make you infinitely better, your second 50% better, your 101st session just 1% better. To feel the progress more we can target something we have spent less time on, or a new technique altogether. I think that's also why it's tempting to learn a lot of techniques rather than get the 1% for more fundamental things, the feeling of progress is stronger. Luckily for us white belts we get this infinite progress from 0 every week or 2 by just doing the technique of the day 👍.
GREAT advice! I went to another gym for a year, and saw little improvement. Went back to my old gym and realized exactly what you're talking about.
I dont do BJJ but the shirt says:
Head And Arms
Americana
Ezekiel
Lapel Choke
Bow And Arrow (I dont have all the letters the first R)
Armbar
Loop Choke (Dont see all the letter after H)
Toe Hold
Monoplata
Guillotine
Calf Slice (Dont see letter after i)
Gogoplata (Dont see letters after A)
Brabo Choke
Clock Choke
I cant see anymore, i can only see 14 rows 😮
365?! Awesome bench, brother! Most guys never hit three plates. That strength must be such an added punch to your already impressive Jiu Jitsu. Impressive!
My strength was a long time ago in my days when I was powerlifting (20s)
Can you stand still for a sec? I'm trying to find submissions in that crossword puzzle, lol
😂
its unfair to tiger why cant he play with his equals
Great 👍🏼 stuff - old purple belt - going to research Deliberate Training - sounds consistent with the 70/30 Rule.
That would be a real revolutionary gym; the one where you could roll with yourself from 6 months prior.
I don't believe it! Who can smash you Chewy?
was wondering what your thought about gym and individuals posting training footage?
Is that a new intro? 👍
I needed this exact video right now. Thanks dude.
I love the new into 💯
Chewy's videos are making small incrimental improvement now that he's a blackbelt in TH-cam-jitsu
Good stuff, thanks Chewy!
Great video thanks
