- Preparation of any surface prior to decorating is the most important part of the job but so easily overlooked by the home DIYer. It’s so important to either use a sealer or primer on bare drywall/plasterboard. I’ll be using a sealer from Zinsser called Gardz on my walls as I will be specifically applying lining and wallpaper. In this video I’ll be giving you the info you need as to why to use a drywall sealer
Lou 👍🏼🛠
Finally, someone who gets it. I am 100% a "seal your drywall" guy, and it's refreshing to hear someone who understands the materials we are working with.
For all of you DIY folks out there lost in a sea of amateur/bad advice, _listen to this woman_ , she is spot on.
Love watching a fellow Brit as suppose to an American DIYer
Agreed 😃 I wish more Brits were on TH-cam
100% agree!
I'm a first time homeowner, with 0 idea how to do DIY correctly, Thank you Lou for saving me from a dodgy pain job!
Glad I could help 🙌🏼😃
Great video. She explains things so simply and gives reasons for the actions
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for demo & useful info, had to trawl through 6 other creators before I came across this video to see what it looks like, how to use, pros & cons and not watch the back of the tin being read out loud 😂
thanks - for taking the time and effort to make this great video - this is exactly what i needed to know - stripped a room where they'd used unskimmed plasterboard on 3 walls !! what a nightmare! So I bought the zinser Gardz and hopefullly this will makes my life a lot easier
You’re welcome, I’m glad I could help out🙌🏼
So pleased I found your channel. I am a total DIY newbie and find some other DIY channels intimidating. You are so personable and informative. New follower!
That’s so kind of you to say, thank you.
I’ve got lots of new content coming soon. If there is anything specific you need help with just let me know 😃
Top Tip, Always Seal your backgrounds, Cracking Video 😉
Might i suggest the old school alternative that seems to be more bulletproof. Unwaxed shellac to seal the wall, then prime the unwaxed shellac with oil based primer. The oil primer gives off
a lot of odor while it dries but let me tell you nothing will get through that shellac layer.
Shellac is a great product to use. In the UK we use a product called Zinnser BIN but yes it really does smell bad🤪
Sealing is very important but a cheap PVA ($15/gallon) is adequate for most applications.
Haha cool video good info
Thanks 🙌🏼😃👍🏼
Does a paint primer also work as a sealer?
I am now at the "too late" fase, where i took down the wallpaper and have now raw drywall, not skimmed, from the previous renters.
What should i do?
I've been told new builds are no longer getting skimmed with plaster over the plasterboard. I've just stripped back an old edwardian terrace and will be in the process of plaster-boarding shortly, given the labour required to plaster/skim the whole house i was wondering what your thoughts were on whether its worth the money to get it skimmed or whether sealing and painting straight onto plasterboard just does the job and saves a bunch of cash?
If you have the budget I’d have it skimmed every time. For me it’s a better finish, easier to redecorate and easier to repair.
Are you also a quilter -do you have a channel? My wife loves the dresden plate! Thank you.
It took me a while to work out what you were talking about! I had to look it up 🤣. No not a quilter
Hey there. I've just "skimmed" using knauff proroll light. Sanded it down. Looks. Perfect. Should I use guardz. Drywall primer. Or just paint direct?
Hi
I did a jointing compound skim followed by a mist coat. I have then done 3 coats of a dark coloured clay paint. This is how I have handled gypsum skim coats before and its worked.... However, I have found quite a big difference in the colour of the cutting in paint to the roller paint (not every wall evertime) so much so that I bought more of the top coat (£££) and went again. If anything it is now worse.
I am wondering if its not priming? Can I now prime with gardz over the top of the paint, and then simply paint again?
Great video. What happens if you pull back the wall paper lining and you see plaster and mis coat. Ie patches of both. Can you apply this all over to prime ahead a repainting?
Yes you can 👍🏼 . Scrap off any loose flaky paint , sand the walls with 120grit sandpaper, remove the dust and then apply Gardz 🙌🏼
I’ve recently started decorating a place I moved into and the walls were coming out in many many bubbles. So thats because who ever painted the place when it was built didn’t seal the plasterboards?
Probably but not necessarily! Not all plasterboard is made equally.
@@lousworkshop I’ve now stripped back to the plasterboard and sealed it with a mist coat. I was having a nightmare with it so hopefully this will fix it now.
@@walesu.k.2108 I’ve got my fingers crossed for you 🤞🏻
oil alkali resisting primer is best make it has hard as plaster
I love that there is always options and more than one way to do things 🙌🏼
Im about to paint my walls soon( New Build) pretty sure it's just magnolia paint straight onto plasterboarding. Will sand down walls. But still afraid oll pant with peal off when rolling new paint. Will this product help stop that? Thanks.
Hey 👋🏻 Yes, definitely. If it’s a new build then it’s probably been painted with a cheap contract Matt and this stuff will seal that in a give you a great surface for paper or paint 🙌🏼
No painter in the world uses a bought sealer, you water down a very cheap white emulsion to a 70/30 mix to seal the paint
That’s fine for a plaster skimmed surface but we’re talking about drywall and the redecoration of it!
10 minutes to explain that wallpaper paste will rip off the paper of the drywall😂
Don’t waste money on this. Just seal it with cheap white emulsion watered down, 50/50.
