- Newfoundland Traditional Pea Soup Recipe
For those wanting to try it out, here's the recipe I used today:
Ingredients:
¾ cup dried yellow split peas, soaked overnight and drained
1 small ham bone or 1 cup diced cooked ham
4 cups water
1 small onion, diced
1 carrot, diced
1 small potato, diced
½ small turnip, diced
1 bay leaf
½ tsp salt (adjust to taste)
¼ tsp black pepper
Optional: 1 tsp dried savory for a classic Newfoundland flavor
Instructions:
1. Soak the split peas overnight, drain, and rinse them well.
2. Heat your 10-inch Dutch oven over some hot coals. Add 4 cups of fresh water, split peas, and ham bone (or diced ham).
3. Bring to a boil, then add the diced onion, carrot, potato, turnip, and bay leaf. Stir it all together.
4. Cover and simmer for about 1.5 to 2 hours, adding more water if needed, until the peas are soft and the soup thickens.
5. Remove the bay leaf, season with salt, pepper, and savory if you like, and enjoy!
You get everyone to cut up your onions...smart chef 😊

Fantastic humour and cooking.good job willy❤
Thanks, Scott! Glad you're enjoying the humour, I always say the secret ingredient to good cooking is a bit of laughter. Appreciate you watching, and have a great evening.
That was a great video & Rose was such a sweet lady 🤗
Thanks for your support my friend.
I always enjoy your down home cooking! Cooked outdoors in a cast iron Dutch oven no less! I give my pea soup a couple of pulses with immersion blender to thicken.
Thank you, I’m glad you enjoy the cooking. There’s just something special about that cast-iron Dutch oven outdoors. Giving the soup a couple of pulses with an immersion blender is a great idea. I’ll have to get myself one to plug into my new Bluetti. That’s definitely going on my list, appreciate the tip. Have a great day my friend.
Willy my buddy we look forward every evening like watching the news always, and now always look to see what special guest you might have show up lol. Keep up the great work my buddy, looked some good my buddy, just have to boil longer to thicken up I'm thinking. Now dough boys will help it thicken. Now we don't soak our peas anymore either. It looked great to me , except now I'm hungry lol. Have a great evening guys
Gary, my buddy, you’ve got it all figured out. Some dough boys, a bit more simmering, and we’ll have it thick enough to stand a spoon in. Thanks for watching Gary and Have a great evening, my friend.
Love your background. Just beautiful. I can almost smell the soup ha
Hello my friend. Thanks for watching and have a great day. Cheers.
Rose was simply delightful! She had an opinion on Newfies not using Betty Crocker Bwa hahaha. Comedy Gold!
Sammy, Rose definitely didn’t hold back. She’s got that classic Newfie spirit, if it ain’t made from scratch, it ain’t worth the stir. But hey, sometimes even us Newfies gotta take a shortcut, and Betty Crocker’s there for when I need to fake it til I bake it. Comedy gold indeed. Have a great day Sammy.
Willie we are our own worst critic! I understand what you’re saying, but it still looks amazing!!! I definitely love me some pea soup! And my background is French, Canadian and Irish on my dad side….. but when mom used to make pea soup intended to be the green split peas with ham and carrots and potatoes…… and nicely thick and comforting! Sometimes she would make it with the yellow ones as well….. but mostly Green.
Do Canadians mostly make it with the yellow? I definitely like the flavor of yellow split peas! And don’t beat yourself up. I know it’s not what you would like but I got it is wonderful and it looks amazing.! Ty for sharing! And I’ve never had it with turnips in there. I bet that gives it a nice flavor. :)
Not for nothing but I have discovered that instant potatoes throw a small handful of that into a soup or a stew and it is a wonderful thickener !
Kelly, you’re absolutely right, we really can be our own worst critics. I appreciate your kind words. Your mom's pea soup sounds like a comforting classic, and it’s interesting how everyone adds their own twist. Up here in Newfoundland, we mostly use the yellow split peas, but I think it just depends on where you are in Canada. And you’re onto something with those instant potatoes, I’ll have to give that trick a try next time. The turnip adds a nice little touch of flavor, and it’s great for those chilly days on the Rock. Thanks for sharing your memories and tips, Kelly.
Great video Willy👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks Sten for watching. Have a great evening.
Yessssss another great video from Willys Cove !!!!

Thanks, Wanda. I was lucky to meet Rose yesterday, such a humble and kind lady, and she sure knew how to add some fun to the onion chopping. Moments like that are what make this cooking hobby so special for me. It’s all about meeting great folks and getting out of the truck to share a laugh. Have a wonderful day Wanda.

Thanks Willy for another interesting video! We enjoyed it to the max! Looking forward to the next!
Thank you so much, Lorne. I'm really glad you enjoyed it to the max. It means a lot knowing you’re having a good time watching. I’ll keep the fun coming.
Hi again Willy, moving back to Newfoundland was a very good decision. You are in your element now and flourishing. It’s so nice to see your channel grow, I remember when you were excited to have 250 with hopes to reach 500. Keep up the hard work buds you are going to make it. I’m hoping next year you will be on your way to getting a garage put on the land where your grandparents lived.
Hey, Alex! Thank you so much for the kind words and for sticking with me from the start. It’s incredible to see how far things have come, and moving back to Newfoundland really has been the best decision. I still remember hitting that 250-subscriber milestone and dreaming of reaching 500, and now we're at 1,800! It means a lot knowing that folks like you are cheering me on. One of my biggest hopes is to get a house put up on the land my grandfather left me, and while it might take some time, I’m going to keep pushing forward. Thanks for the support and being part of this journey. I appreciate you, Alex.
Darn it, I jumped in right at the very end.
Me, too
Thanks for showing up Lynette.
Hello my friend. Have a great evening.
Best video!!! What a job Willy
Any timeframe when you’ll be back in Calgary
Hi Leanne, seems like I’ll be here for the winter. No time frame as of now. Maybe next summer I’ll head into Fort Mac.
Have a great evening my friend. Thanks for your support.
@Willy - Wow! A Premiere❤ When I cook split pea soup, I soak over night or boil for a hour before simmering for 3-4 hours at least to get that thickness you want.😊
Yes, that’s what I should have done. I did soak them overnight, but I didn’t boil for an hour. Maybe that’s what I should have done, next time. I’ll do that.
Hey Willy, you’ll probably have to add water to that tomorrow, pea soup always thickens up when it gets cold, looks delish 😀
Thanks Holly for the tips. Yes the soup did thicken up from last night, so I did add water. Have a great evening. The weather wasn’t the best today for cooking.
@@WillysTruckLife did you do a video today? I know it’s miserable out there today
@@hollymcgrath6891 Hi Holly, I usually try to film two videos in a row and then take one day off. If it's the weekend, I aim to do videos on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. For the rest of the week, I stick to a pattern of two days on and one day off. So I don’t burn myself out. Have a great evening Holly.
@@WillysTruckLife awesome idea Willy!
FYI I have a few things to help you out when you’re using your Sparky! Lol
Nice
Thanks for watching my friend. Have a great day.
Thanks Willy for acknowledging Truth and Reconciliation Day 😊
Thank you, Tanya. It’s important to recognize and honor the Truth and Reconciliation Day. I'm glad I could share that moment, and I appreciate you being here and supporting the message. Have a great evening my friend.
You could add a little rice or macaroni for a thickner ❤😊
Thanks Scott for the tip. I appreciate that. Next time I’ll try that. Have a great evening.
Are you going to use your Bluetti? It is a great power station. I always smile so much during your videos, thanks 😅
Hi Tanya, I will be using the Bluetti AKA Sparky. Lol. As soon as I receive other things that are on the way.
Have a great evening.
Willy cooking at the rock on The Rock.
Your soup looked good to me. I only remember pea soup as a kid as being green and looking disgusting. Maybe that was a different pea soup. 🥣
Karen, you nailed it, cooking on the Rock, keeping it real. And trust me, I’ve seen that green pea soup from the past, looked more like a science experiment than dinner. But don’t worry, this one’s the real deal. No mysterious green goo here, just good old Newfoundland flavour. Thanks for watching Karen and have a great day.
Musifying would have helped... Also you could have thickened it with some corn starch. More of a stew really.. However it looks divine. Congrats Willy !
Thanks Melissa. Yes I was thinking of the same thing when I was making the stew. I had corn starch but I never used it. Have a great day my friend.
Allow your peas to start breaking down before adding the other veggies…I think this might help😊
Thanks for the tip Sally. I’ll definitely try that out. Have a great weekend my friend.
Dammit, I missed it
I’ll watch though
Brent! I was wondering where you disappeared to, thought maybe you got lost in the woods or something. Glad you found your way back. Enjoy the replay.
I’m a bad b’y @@WillysTruckLife
And true pea stoop… lol soup
Hi Karen, thanks for watching and have a beautiful morning.
