      I just can't get over the irony of being a woman of colour who has benefited from past campaigns for inclusivity saying she thinks inclusivity has gone too far. Should we go back to the days when wealthy white men held all the power and everyone else had no say? Ableism is just as prevalent as racism and people get away with it because it goes unchallenged. Oppression is oppression.

    I’m a paraplegic mom of preschooler twins. When the twins were about 2 ish, we were watching a Disney Parks holiday special and in one part, there was a band playing and one of the band members was a wheelchair user. One of my littles excitedly grabbed the other one and started shouting, “look look! He’s in a wheelchair just like momma!!” Listen, *I* felt like a rockstar that day. My kids lit up brighter than any holiday display. It was pure joy. Representation matters!

  • @EmilySuydam

    The fact that she believes disabled people aren't the best people to model adaptive clothing FOR disabled people shows representation matters. She honestly believes disabled people can't be models, proving representation truly matters, so people don't hold such ableist views!

    Here whole “educate me” thing was just a cop out in case someone called her on her bullshit. So she can go “oh I said you can educate me, I didn’t know” as proven by her response video where she doubled down.
    I don’t think she even bothered to realize the underwear is made specifically for disabled people. It’s not just regular underwear being modeled on a disabled model (which is an entirely different argument) it’s underwear FOR disabled people and she either wants it not to exist at all, not to be advertised in public (keep our gross bodies in secret), or she wants able bodied models to show our adaptive products.
    Her whole rant about not everything being for you is so hypocritical. THE UNDERWEAR FOR DISABLED PEOPLE IS NOT FOR YOU CANDACE

    I have to say the first time I took my mobility scooter on an airplane for work. I came to TH-cam and the videos here helped me understand the process. It's scary doing these things for the first time and not knowing how things are going to go. So it was super helpful to see that. Also like you said disability is different for everyone and it's nice to see a popular company like Skims making under garments for people in wheelchairs. This woman is one that can't accept when she is wrong and her own ableism. This is sad because her behavior will not change until she accepts how she is acting instead of doubling down on her ableism.

    If she wants to prove she's not abelist she should do a week in the life of a handicapped person ( with pain simulators, wheelchair use 24/7, laxatives given to her without warning at random times etc...) and then, and maybe not even then (some of my issues are more a long term "wears you down" type of thing), could she even think of having an opinion on such matters !
    Thank you Gem for being you and doing what you do, your videos have helped me so much!

    I think Candice is toxic and needs to take accountability for her terrible actions! The fact that she has been on the receiving end of discrimination due to her race but then feels it is absolutely fine to make discriminatory and derogatory comments about disabled people makes me feel physically sick. I would not wish my disability on anyone as it has made my life unbearable at times, but if that woman could experience it for one day, and the discomfort of non-adaptive clothing, maybe she should begin to realise just how wrong she is. I am not a fan of the whole cancel culture, but if anyone deserves to be cancelled, she does. I don’t even think an apology could sway me as I’d find it impossible to believe her after the way she has behaved and spoken about people who, because they’re different to her, apparently aren’t worthy of being treated with dignity, equality and respect… I could go on but the anger this causes me has given me palpitations again 🥺😩

    Positive representation is absolutely important! I have schizophrenia and can only think of 2 instances where Hollywood portrayed people like me in a positive light: John Nash the mathematician and more recently the mother of Jean Luc Picard in Picard s2. All other times we are portrayed as the villains. Its bad, when "coming out" to friends and family I was asked by a few if I wanted to kill them as the only time theyve seen depictions of schizophrenia was by characters that are violent and homicidal. Ive never commited any crimes or tried to hurt anyone( except myself). In reality, Im a sunday school teacher who loves gardening and the outdoors

    Representation matters more than most things in most people's lives. It can mean the difference between life and death, no exaggeration.
    As another disabled parent it's wonderful to watch your videos, your generous sharing of your family time and activities. My daughter is 8 and has only ever known me be disabled. She has actively chosen dolls with wheelchairs in shops. Representation MATTERS. Her friends will have seen dolls with wheelchairs, prosthetic limbs, hearing aids, skin conditions, cochlear implants etc. These all exist and are available through mainstream retailers. The conversation will be different when she is a teen, SO different than when I was a teen. I didn't become a wheelchair user until I was about 30. Candice's assumptions that we have no talent or do not work!! Not everyone can work, disabled or not that's true. But many of us do! I own my own Art and Design business after being retired from a clinical job in the NHS 15 years ago. I still work my ass off! Thank you for all you do! It means a great deal!!

      I had a teacher colleague who asked me how I could control or discipline students from a wheelchair. I replied that one strategy was to tell my students that they had to remain seated because I have to remain seated. He looked dubious but students always laughed and felt that it was a reasonable requirement. Others were angry that I couldn't take more than 40 students in each class because then I couldn't move around the classroom in my chair. (Though national guidelines for science classes said classes should be 18-20 with absolutely no more than 25. How does anyone safely do labs with 44-48 students?!)

      Omg, I've experienced this. I use crutches on a "good day", and a rollator or wheelchair on a bad day. This is a result of breaking my back and suffering spinal damage. I also have autoimmune conditions- psoriatic arthritis(which attacks the joints and spine), crohn's disease, plus fibromyalgia and a host of other health issues. The spine injury left me with no sensation in the saddle/genital area, no control of my bladder and bowel, so I new have to wear incontinence pads, and I can't tell when anything is passing, which has led to a lot of embarrassing situations. 😢
      I've had several job interviews, but as soon as I meet with the interviewers, their first impression is no longer what's on my CV/résumé, nor how professionally I'm dressed. The first thing they see is my crutches. There's so many interviews that I can tell turn into simple "box ticking" exercises because the potential employers lose interest when asking questions etc.
      As it stands (or not so much physical standing), I can't work now. I fell down all the stairs in my house, in November, which caused more spinal damage, and I can't even sit on my bed without pain.
      Sorry for the long post.

    Candace really never cared about being rude or cruel. She wants views and money, and she is used to getting both from a certain audience. She never apologized because she never really cared about hurting disabled people. She is wrong, she has been proven wrong, but she just doesn't have an open mind. I think she actually needs to approach this with an open mind, learn how she was wrong and how it hurt people, and then make a genuine apology if she really wants to grow as a better person. If not, then she should at least stop making more videos on disability all together.
    And you have absolutely inspired people Gem. I decided to do a Disney trip with my kids and husband because of your disney videos. It meant so much to me to be able to take my kids on a core memory trip that I could fully participate in at a time I could only be in bed or a powerchair because of my chronic illness. It helped me and my family so much to be able to do a big family trip that was accessible for me. It helped me feel like a capable, loving mom. If your disabled and able, and you have dreams to go into acting/modelling good luck to you!! Cbeebies has a host with downs syndrome, a few years ago a presenter with only one arm. WHAT. I’m not even physically disabled and I’m gobsmacked 😮. I’m with you Gem. This is the first I’m hearing about this Candice and I’m appalled. It also dives me nuts that not only clothing isn’t completely inclusive for wheelchairs but also many clothing for petite isn’t actually petite as it doesn’t fit those 5foot and under. E.g. I was looking at a clothing brand catalogue and I came across some dresses & they said comes in petite. So I took a look and they were only 8cm shorter than the regular dress. Also when I checked against myself the measurements it was way too long. The dresses should have been 20 cm shorter. For petite wheelchair users it must be even harder. I DEFINITELY think we need a LOT more inclusivity for different people.

    • @TheMazinoz
      @TheMazinoz ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, this woman Candice is so fu
      .g narcissistic and discriminatory. People should be fired! For what!? Black, fat, disabled people don't need clothes? I also get the petite problem. At 5' even petite clothes are hard to find. If you are slightly overweight it's worse. Hence now own a sewing machine with features I need and an overlocker just to alter clothes. Not a WC user so was unaware of underwear issues. But can see the point of adaptive clothing for them. Also good for musculoskeletal issues of various sorts, not just HEDS.

    • @ellerj641
      @ellerj641 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      The petite clothing yes! Listen designers, we're like T-Rexes but with short legs instead. The amount of times I walk into a store and I'm out in like 5 minutes because all the pants they had were too long. When I do find something, I hang on to that thing until it literally falls apart. Finding pants is like trying to find a needle in a haystack.
      Also, women's clothing sizes needs to be the same across the board. You can go to 5 different stores and look at all their pants in one size. Even though they're supposed to be all the same size, they vary wildly. I wear anywhere from a 10 to a 14 because companies make their clothing so differently. Whereas men wear like one size through all clothing brands.

    • @EmilyCheetham
      @EmilyCheetham ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ellerj641 I have to get all my trousers from M&S. so far they are the only clothing brand Iv sound that make short trousers that actually fir me. I’m 4 foot 11. Iv bought the off trousers a couple of times from other places but never gone back to them. They weren’t consistent. But M&S seem to make short trousers that actually are short. Definitely recommend them to anyone petite looking for trousers. I too tear my trousers till they are worn out. As for other clothes I have only ever found 1 long skirt I like that actually fit me (& didn’t drag on the ground). As for long dresses I cannot find ANY. Even the petite ones are about 10cm too long. Clothing brands only seem to take 8-10cm off and call it petite. But when it comes to long dresses & skirts we need 20cm shorter if you are anyone 5 foot or shorter. Why do manufacturers not get this. Stop calling something petite if it cannot fit someone 5foot or shorter. They seem to think well 5foot 2 is petite so we’ll make it for them but that’s not good enough.

I'm wheelchair bound and go through the nightmare of clothes that fit perfect in standing position but tight as hell when seated. ( yes i can stand. Still have one leg, no prophetic. So have to go with baggy clothes that look great when sitting. I hate it. My undies arnt the lovely lacy type I used before. Comfort has to come first. And a bra that has straps to stay in place when pushing chair.. Sewn elastic across back. Works but depressing.

      @@punky19761 I have been a paraplegic since the 90s. I have been bullied in school - kicked so hard I nearly tipped sideways.
      I have been harassed by cops for parking in accessible parking spots, and I absolutely mean harassed. In one instances, she ran at me, in uniform, shouting at me as I was pulling into the spot. She gave me no time to explain or even reach to get my chair or my placard. Whats more is it was pretty damn obvious that I am a wheelchair user. I had a toll permit visibly displayed on the windshield. My brightly colored wheelchair was sitting next to me in the passenger seat, and my placard was on my dash ready to be hung. I have also been accused by theme park workers, including one really upsetting experience at Disney World, of faking my disability. And the. There was the time that I was lectured by a toll permit worker for using my toll permit. She accused me of using someone else’s permit as I could clearly not be disabled. I explained that I was a paraplegic and pointed out that I was driving with bloody hand controls. She scoffed and told me she was reporting me.
      Then there’s the abled who don’t believe we’re capable of anything because we’re disabled. I can’t even count how many people feel the need to comment on my decision to have children as a disabled person. Not surprisingly many of these unwanted opinions have come from medical personnel.

      Wow I have just this video and to me it really shows how ignorant this woman is. Why is she so offended about people modelling in wheelchairs. I don't use a wheelchair, but I do have mobility issues which greatly affects my ability to walk properly and hence I use a walking stick and have a disability parking permit. Even when I was fully able bodied, I never understood why people were so unsympathetic towards disabled people, but since having my waking difficulties I have become much more aware of the disadvantages that disabled people face. When I go out I often notice the lack of accessible parking and/or lack of accessible toilets in cafes and restaurants. I can manage without an accessible toilet, but anyone in a wheelchair could not. To me this is so wrong and businesses should be making a lot more effort to have accessible toilets as a lot of them do not. And quite often even those businesses that do have accessible toilets, often use them to store things in which defeats the purpose of what they are supposed to be used for. I think as a society there is a lot more that needs to be done to make things more inclusive for disabled people. Even for someone like me I have to ask for some help sometimes. For example anytime I book accommodation I have to ask for a walk in shower as I cannot use a shower over the bath as it is too dangerous for me. Whilst most people understand the issue, I have had some people say they can't guarantee my request as it is up to the hotel to decide. Like this is a safety issue, not a request for a bottle of champagne. I also check that if the hotel has a swimming pool that it has a pool ladder or safety rail that I can use to get into the pool. A lot of hotels do not even have these basic safety features. As for people in wheelchairs there does not seem to many hotels that have ramps or hoists that people can use to get into pools which is not good. When on holidays recently I noticed that a lot of tours specifically said they were not wheelchair accessible. And even in my case some of the bus companies did not have the ability to lower the step so I could easily get on and off the bus and I had to ask a couple of people to help me down. In short we definitely live in a society which very much caters to fully able bodied people only.

Ramps are made to steep, or people just move her wheelchair out of the way while she's in it. My story on how representation helped me. As a kid, I was absolutely petrified by the thought of getting into some sort of accident that took away my ability to walk or draw. Losing a limb or being paralyzed with something TV always like to show as such a negative thing, and my anxiety took that and ran with it. That is until one day an individual with a prosthetic leg came in to my children's youth group and showed off her different limbs and talked about what it was like being a prosthetic leg user. That moment I realized that being disabled and needing to use ambulatory devices like a wheelchair, prosthetic, limb, or anything like that didn't mean, my life and art would end. Just that I would have new ways of getting around.
    As a teenager, my hyper mobile limbs experienced one of their first of many bad injuries. From that point onwards, I became a part-time to full-time Cane wielder and Knee brace wearer. I would do what I can to protect my knees well also trying not to miss you. The ambulatory devices that I had available to me. Some days this was harder than others due to discrimination and people thinking that I couldn't possibly be meeting assistive devices like store, wheelchairs, or even seeds to sit down in because "I was young, too young to be disabled." This would make me super nervous and using any form of assistance that I absolutely needed to be using. But seeing others online telling their stories of being disabled, whether it be blind, cane, wheelchair user, or prosthetic limb helps me feel better about myself and my needs.
    Now I am wheelchair user finally getting the treatment. I've been so desperately needing and I don't feel scared or upset about this fact. I feel excited that I now can go about my day without calculating how much pain something was going to leave me in afterwards. The pain is still there, but with the combination of the chair and my cane I can keep it at a level that allows me to get the closest I have in a while to comfortable sleep at night while still allowing me to be free to do all the things I haven't been able to.

    I have tourettes, so I have had good and bad experiences with representation. The ONLY bad thing I have had with representation is people like Candace who are ignorant and those who fake/people who accuse of faking. I have a situation with my tics (and I know on other channels or sites people will say this is fake because they saw a tourettes video and now apparently know everything) but my tics cause my knees to buckles, my muscles in my hands and feet to clam up or my back to tilt backwards so much i fall. For a year I was putting myself in a dangerous situation because I had no mobility aid. I searched up online tics causing falls (and other ways of saying that) there was NOTHING online for quite a while for that. Now i can find 3 different blogs about it. But the internet did not mention that so my imposter syndrome got in the way. After getting told to get a wheelchair from my doctor (which i didn't straight away) i fell in the middle of the road and after then got a wheelchair.
    Funny thing is the first day I left the house in my wheelchair, a lady came up to me and asked where i got mine because her son got a wheelchair and the caster wheels were bad. She told me the reason her son was in a wheelchair was because he has tourettes. I felt so validated from the conversation because someone else had the same problem. Through a support group found out many people with tourettes (in that group chat) have used wheelchairs. THIS is why representation matters. (there is so much I could rant about how the lack of representation on tourettes specifically is reducing the support i can get but yes) hopefully those people can educate themselves because it matters.

    Everyone deserves to be represented. I am not a wheelchair user, but I can understand them wanting to see clothing model on people that uses a wheelchair or walking aid. As a plus size person it drive me nuts that clothing company sale larger size, but rarely use plus size models to advertise the clothing, how are we supposed to know what the dress, shirt, pants, bra or underwear look like on a plus size person when only show on models that are size zero through nine. The some goes for wheelchair users they need to see the clothing on model that use wheelchairs everyday to give them an idea on what the clothing will look like on them.

    My husband is disabled, not in a wheelchair, but he is legally blind, and this infuriates me how inconsiderate and really vile Candace was being to the fact she was seeing a disabled model. If she's really spitting out about what God would think about disabled people, maybe she should go back to the part of the bible where it says to love. Cause clearly she missed that part! How absolutely volatile of her to be so clearly upset because an underrepresented group of people are getting the representation they need. Shame on her!

    I can’t stand Candace for many reasons but hearing this as a disabled person was really the last straw. I don’t wish her any harm but only if she were to become disabled do I think she might finally understand. I used to be somewhat like her, hard right-wing and didn’t understand the point of representation. I hope she can find the path I did and come to the realization that it’s so needed.

    I’d like to say that the comments about fashion are a pointless drain on society and that the people who comment on it… but being new to the wheelie world, I now realize how different clothing (and accessories) need to be to be useful for someone like me. And sadly sitting an able-bodied man in a wheelchair is t going to show it since they can get dressed with a different gravity interacting with them for instance. For example when I dress I can’t get a shirt to stay tucked in to save my life which is really frustrating. And I hate after a while feeling the fabric bunched behind me especially after cathing!

Umm, I’m going to have to think about that but first when I get a moment I’m going to seek out that particular recording, read the comments and act according to my reaction to those things. Atm I’m less than impressed and that’s an understatement! 🤬

    OMG and she is representing a bully! I really think an apology wouldn't be enough since she doubled down on her ideas that inclusiveness is "stupid". I honestly feel that she shouldn't be in a position where other's are able to look up to her. Nothing she said was further from the truth. When I was injured I had no idea about adaptive clothing and I was only injured in 2016. I am from a rural area where I didn't even know anyone in a wheelchair and I am still trying to value my life. Seeing disabled asjust another person living life would have gone a long way to help so many. Mentally it would help. I think she needs to be stopped and educated that the disabled can do things

    I find it ironic how a woman of colour hasn’t made the connection about not being seen and represented as its only a generation or two ago that being a woman and a person of colour might have seen her have to fight for equality, to have a voice, to have the right to have her humanity regarded and respected. These are the very things that we as disabled people, I am paralysed from the waist down, have been fighting for just as long if not longer to achieve. I wish I could say that seeing this kind of thing in 2023 is shocking, but in my experience this is still going on. I am shocked that she used the internet to express her self in this matter. You would think that in the world that we live in now that she would have been a little more internet savvy. If there is any justice she will crawl back in to the cave from which she appeared soon enough. Let’s hope she never has to go through anything like the challenges that disabled people have to endure. On a positive note I have to say fair play to Ms Applegate. As ever thank you for your video. I look forward to the next one.

    I don’t look good in that underwear sitting down. I probably did to someone when I was walking. But she needs to be forced to disrobe and redress herself from a seated position in a wheelchair with the idea that she has the same function as a quad paw does, to truly see how hard it is. I remember when I destroyed my left shoulder and arm. I had the most difficult time putting a bra on all I had was 1 arm for 2 years. I wore backless shirts and tank tops basically they tied behind the back and I left them untied.
    Sadly, people like Mrs. Owens will never understand what it’s like to be disabled, or do not feel included in something as simple as clothing, heaven help her if she ever had to deal with life as a wheelchair user and had to learn how to drive with hand controls.
    When shoe is on the other foot she’ll be singing a different tune. What goes around comes around.

    I hid my disability for years and such. I hope people do get to be in society. That is not my experience but a naive dream, I think. Truly, I prefer to be invisible than to have to explain everything over and over again. No, I do not have magical powers, and I'm not Einstein either. The dumber I am doesn't make people smart either. Another problem is it deals with heavy abuse and dehumanization, which will, although it happens more than you would think, lead to some champion of agony that sucks them back into more suffering. Then I get hit with the middle class/spoiled girl attack. We had a lot of problems at one point. We have my inspiring anteaters, never forget them. Being told these things is annoying. I'm trying to leave some things to karma. They simply will not understand. I used to lie a lot about my past, but naughty, naughty. Never tell a lie, even though "Lying Is the Best part." Panic at the Disco. Purity of thought is even more fun. You've got to love all of us falling onto disability and making it so that we can't comprehend as well while wandering in the ghetto and other places. No more using us to bypass laws either.

    I did know of Candice, and often agreed with many of her viewpoints. However, she most certainly made me angry with this. I am in a wheelchair, and have been for the last 5 years, from a progressive, neurological illness. I’m a bit older than you are at age 60. Like you, I agree we need representation. We need to be seen.
    The part that really fried me was when she said “we don’t need that in our face”. What is “that” that she doesn’t need in her face? Disabled people? So, what if she bumps into me shopping, running errands, going out to eat, going to the theater? What will she do seeing me at work? Or at the beach, or on vacation? Will seeing “that” just ruin her day?
    There was nothing wrong with that woman’s modeling abilities. She did a fine job. Why then, was this mocked as a “participation trophy”? Is Candice truly unable to grasp that people in wheelchairs have plenty of talent, intelligence, and gifts? Does she figure that once disabled we lose all talent, all gifts, and all ability to think? We should just all sit at home and wait to die. Don’t let “that” be in anyone’s face

    Hey, im fairly new to your channel, hopefully its not wierd that im enjoying your videos but im not a wheelchair user myself, although i suffer badly with my back with pain and weakness due to sciatica im waiting for a physio appointment and im struggling alot with standing for a long time or walking alot, im considering crutches as a support as im off on a holiday in 2 weeks and know il struggle with the amount of walking/standing il be doing, but it really upset me when i bought my crutches and they arrived, i was unboxing them to get a comment from my husband saying oh are you serious !! Thats really upset me and knocked my confidence to the point i now do not want to use them 😢😢
    Im considered able bodied and always been ok until the last 6 months so im guessing i would get alot of judgment if i used the crutches but still !!
    But anyway regardless of your disability i just love your personality and you guys as a family, your positivity is lovely :) xx

    Now what can i say about this. That has a disabled person we have to be grateful for what we get. We are not to be included in society. Now watching that so called apologise (loosely meant) it means that she still does not understand what the whole idea of being included means. Yes Skims have done underwear for a disabled person in a wheelchair and for other disabled people so why cant a disabled person model them. It is no good an able bodied person who stands up models them, it might not work on a disabled person. She would be shouting from the rooftops if the boot was on the other foot. Does she not understand that disabled people work. I am an amputee and work full time for the NHS. Does she not see disabled actors contributing to society as well. For example R J Mitte who is american and suffers from Cereberal Palsy who was in Breaking Bad and that is one example. Stephen Hawking who was a brilliant physicist (sadly passed away) did he not contribute to society. I could carry on but i will leave it at that. Even a company like Snag who i buy my tights from and other items always included models who are disabled both in wheelchairs, prosthetic leg, walking sticks. I even sent them a picture of me wearing my capri tights with my prosthetic leg on and they used it.
