Cheap 4x4 SUV comparison! GWM Tank 300 v Mahindra Scorpio - VFM, off-road test! (Scorpio-N)

  • The Mahindra Scorpio is excellent value - but the GWM Tank 300 might be even better.
These two are close when it comes to price, with just $5000 AUD separating them in the spec levels tested here -- we have the Mahindra Scorpio-N Z8L (known as Scorpio in Australia) and the GWM Tank 300 Ultra.
These are both 4x4 off-road capable SUVs with lots of serious hardware to help you get down and dirty on the trails. But they go about things in very different ways, with the Mahindra offering a simpler offroad capability, and the GWM hosting heaps of technology and gear to make you get the most out of it.
In this review I've compared the value for money (VFM), the warranty and interior finishes, but mainly focused on how each of these two vehicles drive -- both on-road, and off-road with some serious four-wheel driving (4WD) in the Australian Outback.
If you want to see more detail on each of these models, please check out my detailed video reviews on them here:

Had the chance to test drive both few weeks back, in my humble opinion apart from the similar price range the Scorpio is not in the same league as the Tank 300. The Tank is really a much more refined product both in terms of tech and driving capability (on & Off road). As a matter of fact, I do think it is a strong contester to the likes of Prado, Wrangler and the likes. (Speaking from an owner of Prodo for the last 6+ years)

I'd honestly choose the Scorpio cause I'm a old school guy. Not a fan of gimmicks in a car prefer when a car remains basic and does the job. I'm a Off-road freak and I've driven both cars. For me it's about the Feel when off-roading and I get that in the Mahindra it feels like I'm in control of the machine like trying to tame a wild bull I love that feeling. Unfortunately in the tank it felt like just another generic 4×4 with plush toys inside trying to overcome obstacles on the road. I love when my 4×4 has grunt to it honestly it makes the ride more fun for me. When I sat in the Mahindra and took it for a test drive it took me back to the day i brought my land cruiser home. Again just my opinion but the Scorpio feels more of a 4x4. For some reason I prefer the interior of the Scorpio to the Tank I find it mature and it gives off a very rugged and manly look. I mean there's got to be a reason why the Scorpio is a outback favourite right. Seen a lot on the beach too. 3 months with my Sand muncher (Scorpio) and it hasn't missed a beat.

More computerised electrickery inside a Chinese-made car isn't a good thing, for me. My experiences to date with rentals has convinced me that budget car makers simply don't do a great job of the computerised stuff and, when that includes so-called 'autonomous safety systems', I just see problems waiting to happen.
In this sense, the Mahindra, despite having fewer bells and whistles, appears to suffer similar problems, i.e. complaints about the hill hold and something else I can't recall. These issues, especially infotainment connection problems, seem to occur with some of the major manufacturers too, though much less common.

Fewer gadgets to go wrong… Also, being from India, it is designed to withstand considerable abuse from the road conditions it’s likely to encounter everyday in that country. Anything from bumpy city streets to rutted bush tracks that turn into slippery mud during the monsoon rains…. Personally, i would much prefer mahindra to the chinese product anyday !! Part of the reason for my pick is also due ti longevity and we know how chinese products fair on that end !!
Engine noise - diesel will naturally be a little noisy than petrol and vibrate a little more. Having driven the mahindra i find the engine extremely sophisticated
Off road- with 95% people keeping 4x4 for urban driving, does it really matter . Mahindra has the required capabilities of a 4x4 which 99% people will ever need !!
Camera - ill give that to the GWM .
Too many modes for 4x4 - i donno , whilst its a interestung gimmik, its also a perfect disaster waiting to happen ( thats why we go with keep it simple stupid motto )
Lastly all the gimmicks ( lane keep etc etc ) , people i feel are loosing the ability to drive and natural instincts that every driver should have

Chinese is chinese you cant compare it with others. You will cry for parts after few years. I had a GAC GS3. The dealer took 2 months to just replace the bumper. Dont go for gismos, just opt for korean, japanese, american , europen or even indian manufacturer vehicles. Chinese would make you cry in few years. Warranty alone will not help. They have habbit of copying, now they copy business strategies of other countries manufacturers, but are not able to keepup with it.
