    Hi,
Appreciate your videos. I have 2 gates that have Liftmaster CSW200 1hp They are both uphill swing and have been working intermittently in good weather but seem to get worse when it rains. The motors respond to the remote but only begin to open then close in about 5 seconds. Does this sound like a capacitor issue to you?

i have a gate that the capacitor fell off.. once i pull the cover it fell off.. seems the last guy just tired the wires on it... it was arcing and burnt the wires just on the leads for the cap but everthing seems good.. can i just connect it back? also slso since psu for pc im scared of touching the capacitor leads with screw driver.. however u said i can connect it any way and it wont matter?

@hafeez387 Yes, the capacitor is designed to store a charge for a sudden burst of instant discharge to help the motor kick off to spin. So it shorting out shouldn't have hurt the capacitor. Using a wrench or a screwdriver won't hurt you. But most likely it doesn't have a charge anyway because you said the connections shorted out ;-) So I would fix the connectors and try it; doesn't hurt to try.

@@JacobGilliamMasterTech ive already done it... :) ty.. the arcing of the power cables to the cap cause it to stop working it fried the tip of the wires.. as i said the last guy didnt use connectors at the end so it was probs loose so it arc everythime it was used.. i reconnected it the same way but ill fix it soon. its all working fine.. ty awesome video

what happen if the there is no hum sound? is that mean the motor is burned or dead?

    • @JacobGilliamMasterTech

Could be motor, motor harness, or control board. Must check to see if the voltage is being sent out of the control board, and if the voltage is making it to the motor connections behind the little access panel on the motor.

@@JacobGilliamMasterTech I commented above. No motor hum or movement. When I opened the motor access door and with the power ON there was no current on the black wire connected to the motor. If I remove the black wire from the motor, then there is power/current detected in the black wire. Any insights greatly appreciated. Capacitor is dated 2010, so not original, but looks brand new, no char or odor.

How do you know if the capacitor fails? My slave functions, but not my master operator; there's a brief humming sound coming from the motor area and intermittent weak movement when I try to operate the master from the control board. And I did try the thermal reset. I suspect it's the problem but not sure how to test it. Any input would be appreciated!!

That humming is USUALLY a good indicator of a capacitor issue. It's not 100% solid on diagnosing, but probably a good 70-80% chance in your favor ;-) The rest of the time it's brushes, bearings, or shorts in motor winding (all of these mean the need for an entire new motor). BUT if the motor is 15-20 years old, I'd replace the motor or entire machine (based on odds of callbacks).

@@JacobGilliamMasterTech Thanks for your reply! Can I use a multimeter on the capacitor to tell if it's working? The unit I have is around 20 years old but was in a residential setting. I'm thinking a $50 capacitor is worth the gamble vs a $400 motor...

    • @JacobGilliamMasterTech

It depends on your multi-meter. Perhaps the easier way of doing it is swapping the capacitors and seeing if the issue remains with the primary machine or moves to the secondary;-)

@@JacobGilliamMasterTech Thanks for the tip! I'm fairly confident the capacitor is the issue so I ordered a replacement. I'll let you know if it does the trick. I really appreciate your help!

@@JacobGilliamMasterTech Just want to let you know that it was, in fact, the capacitor. Can't beat a $55 fix!! Don't forget to reset the thermal switch after replacing the part. Thanks for all the help!

    Lube the chain!

Lots of things were done to this old bucket of bolts lol. It was eventually completely replaced recently.

Actually, there's a sticker that says specifically NOT to lube the chain!
