Super Mario Kart -- 150cc Star Cup, 2-Player Mode

Now we arrive at the heavyweight class of characters and boy do I feel remarkably silly for having left them in "order" across the selection screen as we made our way through the cups. Why? Because 150cc is brutal and will seek to destroy you and won't hesitate to overtake you in the event you make an error in your driving...and errors are never more costly than they are for these two.

150cc Star Cup
Bowser / Donkey Kong Jr.
They have the lowest acceleration, the highest speed, and... strangely good steering, actually. Well, they're not as unstable as Peach and Yoshi are, and they're the equals of The Marios in this game, Mario and Luigi when it comes to how they handle. Not that their actual handling rating will make them easier to handle from the driver's seat.
In fact, it's their huge range of speeds attainable coupled with their slow rate of moving along this continuum that makes them so hard to handle by comparison, changing the turning radius quite drastically along the different scenarios under which you'll find yourself turning. Of course, you'll hope to be moving as fast as possible at all times, and indeed going faster will make for a wider turn than you'd find yourself performing at Mario or Luigi's top speeds.
I did once hear the claim that driving on ice without sliding is about doing only one thing at a time: accelerate, steer, or decelerate...doing more than one at a time will cause you to slide. Well, it seems to apply somewhat to these two...if you're going really fast and you want to turn without losing traction, let go of the accelerator for a moment.
One thing that makes this recording slightly subpar for what I wanted to do with it: Bowser doesn't actually win any races, so we don't get to hear his victory theme in the course of the Star Cup. Fear not, for I have something up my sleeve to rectify this terrible blind spot.

Koopa Beach 1
Koopa Beach basically takes the notion of the puddle hazards on Choco Island to the natural extreme, making the majority of the offroad into this sort of terrain and deep water hazards beyond that. The sparsely-concentrated grass otherwise seems to work like on Donut Plains.
Anyway, the complete lack of walls and rather forgiving offroad makes for an ideal starting place for unchecked speed at the expense of acceleration and handling.

Choco Island 2
We return to the land that either is or only looks like chocolate...I'm not certain that I'd have quite the required boldness to taste it in order to find out.
This variant on the stage theme has a couple of fairly treacherous features: a really narrow and slightly wandering path coming out of a double hairpin and a huge region covered in a massive puddle.

Vanilla Lake 1
This is a pretty neat theme for courses, too, where the "track" is made of ice and snow serves as the offroad. Beware the ice blocks in the middle of the track, otherwise working like the barriers along the edges of Ghost Valley tracks, only they're on the inside of the course and block advancement instead of keeping you from slipping off the surface. The AI players have an unusually difficult time navigating these segments, incidentally.

Bowser Castle 3
Oh boy, Bowser is one of the drivers more challenged by his own home course than any others...I wonder where the logic was in that design choice, King? This course is one of the biggest barriers to advancement in the whole game...well, at least it was for us, only further exacerbated by the choice of character and lack of recent experience playing Super Mario Kart in particular. (Fun stuff!)

Mario Circuit 4
Oh my, these courses just get crazier about trying to fill every square inch of the potential play field...and in a strange way, I can kinda respect that kind of dedication. It's a real bear to race on sometimes, particularly for those racers who have a hard time with any hairpin turn, let alone a track composed almost exclusively of them. (Also fun stuff!)

***** There is one Bowsers Castle track which does have an early turn which ends in lava yes. But if you have the feather and are going fast enough, you can use it to skip a portion of a track.
