It's because he literally plays to get foul calls, not to make shots. He's the anti-thesis of being a good basketball player and sportsman. Literally tries to draw fouls instead of playing the game.

This was the biggest choke job I have ever seen. As a knicks fan born in the 21st century I never felt the pain when John starks choked away game 7 of the ‘94 finals but this seems worse to me as a complete team effort. I can’t imagine what rockets fans were feeling after this game.
The '94 Finals should have been over in 6. With the Rockets up 86-84 in game 6 and about a second to go in regulation, John Starks took a 3 and got clobbered so hard by a Houston player that if it had happened on a public street instead of on a basketball court the Rockets guy would have gotten jail time for assault. If the referee had been anyone except for I. C. Nothing, Starks would have had a chance to make 3 free throws and win the Finals 4-2.

rockets are disciplined in their switch defense. they are disciplined in their offensive system as well. look at their shot charts. 2 pt shots in their system is considered a lack of discipline. should they work a mid range in? maybe. but until the system architects demand it, they won't. their shot selection second half of games 6 and 7 were primarily due to good defense and fatigue.

A more reasonable estimate: after missing the first 10 3-point attempts, they should have gone for 2’s and should expect to make 2/3 of those attempts…so maybe they “gave up” 20 points
If they had cut down on the threes even a little bit, would've won the game easily. Kept a double digit lead from the second to early third quarter. It's embarrassing the lack of adjustments in a game they had in the palm of their hands.
