  • This is one beautiful restoration! The owner had one of these as a young adult, and later began a search for one...this is the first show it has appeared in. We thank him for his efforts, it's a fond keepsake of an earlier time!

    Awesome looking car! That's a lot of detail and design in the wheels compared to what today's looks like :D

    Ford styling was so very good for 1960. What a beautiful example this car is - so new looking! I agree, the fins look inspired by those of '59 Chevys, but better looking.

      As I've mentioned, this car could have been confused for a Chevy if it didn't have all the insignia! Very nice looking indeed! Thanks! :) Jack

    I remember a coworker who owned one of the basic Ford models for 1960. He was not into spending lots of money on cars..and it seemed to give him very reliable transportation. The real treat is these top of the line cars..they offered so much more for the money with lots of luxury and style. I really think they were a bargain, particularly if you could buy a lightly used model one or two years old. Thanks! :) Jack

      Hey, Jon! Yes, it is a beauty...a coworker had one of these. It looked more like a GM car than a Ford, in my opinion, especially the horizontal fins and tailights. Thanks! :) Jack

    Very nice looking car, one of the last years of the fancy styles before the more conservative styling going forward. Those rear fins remind me of the 1960s Batmobile back end! Congrats to the owner for restoring a car back to it's glory and getting the same kind he had when he was young. Must be a cool experience.

      '60-'61 only years for the Ford Starliner model. Wheel covers are '56-'57 Didge Lancer, not factory Ford. This car is not correctly restored at all.

    Very, very nice! If it were black and a convertible, it would look like the "famous" one my uncle owned! This Sunliner is strikingly beautiful! I love the off-white exterior with the shades of blue interior! The owner has done a fantastic job of restoration.. And those wheel covers will look like the 4th of July, when the car is in motion, and the sun hits them just right! Thanks Jack!!

    Hey, Barry! Competition certainly was keen, and it seemed a given that a car would have to have noticeable change from year to year to guarantee sales results. They certainly watched the competition to see what was a hit, and what was not! Thanks! :) Jack

    Hey, John! I think there was a definite similarity here to the cabin cruisers of the time. And the space age reference can't be denied either! I guess the idea was to make the car resemble very desirable things..and perhaps be symbolic of the upward mobility that these high end cars represented. The owner was absolutely delighted to have found this car. Thanks! :) Jack

    Hey, Karyn! I'm glad this one brings back such great memories! They had two tone interiors down very well at this point. That's an apt description of those wheel covers...as close to spinners as you can get, and definitely meant to set off fireworks. Elaborate wheel covers were the custom rims of the day! Thanks! :) Jack

    Beautiful car! A friend has a black Starliner with red interior. I think he said these '60 Fords were the widest cars ever produced! It's interesting to look at this and compare with the '60 Edsel from a few days ago. The Edsel's rear end looks strange to me until you realize it started out life as a Ford on the design table.

    Hey, Doug! That's what I thought, too...I made it a point to check with the owner about the origin of the A/C. It definitely has an advantage over later models that have the evaporator built in behind the dash in that repairs don't require disassembling the dash! A view under the hood could have given a clue, too. A remarkable restoration! Thanks! :) Jack

    Beautiful car in what I believe is Ford's "Wimbledon" white... a very popular color up to and including the 1980s.
    Starliners and their "semi-fastback" roofline epitomized 1960s styling. My favorite was the 1961. These cars, for years underrated in the collector car hobby/industry, are finally starting to take off -- as a modified example brought almost 50K earlier this year at auction.

    Yes Jack, you could be right about the nautical look of the pillar emblems (or whatever they are called). they remind me of a Nautical compass look. Of course one would use the Stars to Navigate the Ocean. Then we have the name Starliner that sounds like and airship from the new Space Age.. I love the 2 tone blue, the wheel covers, and that extremely complex and stunning rear window. Beautiful car. what a joy it must be to have and to drive one.

    Hey Jack, that "aftermarket" a/c looks like it came in the car (or one from that era) since Ford's factory air in '60 was under-dash unit anyway. There's had canted outlets that blew air to either side; otherwise, I doubt anyone could tell the difference. You're right, what a restoration!!

  • @coolrides
    @coolrides  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey, Steve! Black with red interior would be very cool! I'm not sure about the width dimension, but it is undoubtedly wide! They prided themselves in being able to seat a typical family and their belongings! Yes indeed...when you realize the Edsel was derived from the Ford, you can see the basic underlying similarities. Thanks! :) Jack

    That is a very nicely done Ford. For Fords, I have always had a thing for the 1960 models, because they were so neatly styled. The fins were much better looking than those on the 1960 "Suddenly it's 1957" Plymouths. The Starliners were the neatest looking of all the 1960 Fords, but all other versions were nice in their own way.

      Hey, William! Back in the day, a coworker owned one of these beauties! I thought it was wonderful then, and I still do! The '60 Ford was modern in appearance but didn't go overboard like some of the competition! Thanks! :) Jack

    Wheel covers are from a '57-'58 Dodge Lancer. Dual rear radio antennas weren't stock either. A/C units didn't come from the factory already installed. They were dealer installed.

    Hey, Mick! I think the interior details on this car were more substantial than they had to be...I think that was a trend with the higher end of the Ford line. The drawback of those wheel covers is that they were subject to theft...nothing is more disheartening than to discover that someone has taken them...replacements were expensive! Thanks! :) Jack

  • @monarch1957
    @monarch1957 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Cars were sure distinctive in those days; they changed every year so you knew right off it was a 60 and the aftermarket wheel covers were very popular back then.

  • @coolrides

    That's certainly an interesting consideration....I've always had the nightmare thought of having to replace the windshield of a Mercury Turnpike Cruiser! Glass definitely is vulnerable...the side glass on my '72 Mustang was scratched badly on both sides..fortunately I was able to find good used door glass..and when I checked, they didn't make replacement side windows....windshield and back glass they make! Thanks! :) Jack

  • @coolrides
    @coolrides  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes indeed...it was a bit daring of Ford stylists at the time...but their back end still was less controversial than the '59 Chevy's cats' eyes. I could just sense the owner's enthusiasm for the car...it was the end of a long journey to find one like his original car. Thanks! :) Jack

    One of my "Obscure" Favorites, there was a guy in my High School in the Mid 70's that had one of these in Black with Red interior. I love the early 60's cars they were so unique from year to year...can you imagine if you parked this at City Park and somebody hit a home run right into that back window? I can't imagine trying to find one of those and if you did, what would it cost? I know strange thought,but I had my 1972 BMW 2002Tii, my buddies '56 VW, a MGBGT and a Fiat x1/9 knock out from us

    • @coolrides
      @coolrides  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, Robert! Good eye! I think wheel covers are often exchanged between cars, the owner opting for a look that appeals to them. It sure is cheaper than mag wheels. Thanks! :) Jack

      I'm an oldtimer who was a young kid in 1957 when these came out and there were no mags then so the four bar spinners were the hot tip thing then.

    Nautical? Yes indeed, looks like it would be fitting transportation for the commander of the star-ship Enterprise. :) .That bright work looks flawless and those wheel covers must have been a deluxe option. Ford did come up with a dramatic new style in 1960 with that slopping hood, straight A pillar and semi-fast back design. Sure is a nice example. Love to go cruising in this, but of course on dry land. :D

    I learned to drive a stick shift and parallel park in a '60 Ford tudor, but it wasn't a Starliner, just a regular plain Jane model. Love the Starliners. Only available for 2 years. Had a '60 Ford wagon with a 352 V8 and the horrible green dot automatic, one of the worst transmissions ever. Car would run on top end though. It could do an honest 120 mph and still have lots of oil pressure.

    It's my thinking that lap belts at least keep the individuals in the car in case of a crash, usually much more hospitable than concrete outside the car. It probably won't help with collisions with the windshield or sharp objects on the dash..but not wearing them won't protect either. Thanks! :) Jack

    Are you sure that's an after market air conditioner. Some of the factory ac's were hung under the dash in the early 60's. My 64 Mustang had an under dash ac and it was from the factory.

    • @coolrides
      @coolrides  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The owner told me it was an aftermarket unit, but of course, he may have been misled. A check under the hood would reveal a Ford compressor if it was factory. I agree that many of the early A/C units on new cars were under the dash. Some were integral with the dash if factory installed, and under the dash if dealer installed. Thanks! :) Jack

    I've noticed you have an eye for detail especially with design, and I want to ask your opinion about the design of the Ford Starliner/Sunliner body styles in comparison to the Edsel Ranger. Aside from the obvious lighting differences, do you think the body styles were similar in the 1960 model year? They look so to me.

    • @coolrides
      @coolrides  10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey, Christopher! Yes indeed..they definitely started with essentially the same parts, just styled differently in the very abbreviated year for Edsel in 1960. The 1958 models were of 4 series, the bottom two based on Ford, the top two based on Mercury. But it was clear that Edsel was not going to make it, so FoMoCo clearly cut back on Edsel. I like the styling of the 1960 Ford..the 1960 Edsel doesn't please me as much because it looks to me like its styling was influenced by the desire to just look different from Ford even though essentially the elements were the same. Edsel had moved from cutting edge in styling to a "look-alike" cousin to Ford in 1960. It was a pity...if they had had acceptance of their original design boosted by favorable sales, they might have had a quite different trajectory, and looked quite different from Ford. Thanks! :) Jack
