Well here we are! Track #1 of my year long project to recreate Metallica's Black Album on the drums; and what a way to kick it off with a drumless backing track! Just like many people in the world, the Black Album just resonated with me. It features great songs, killer riffs, solid drumming, and of course an AMAZING sound! In 1991, I was a freshman in high school and this was the first Metallica song I actually learned to play. I played it all the time; both in practicing and in garage bands. Oddly enough, you'd think this would be the first song I recorded in this project but in reality, it was the 2nd. 🤣 Don't mind the outro section...I kind of forgot what to play and got lost for a few bars. 🙄

When I decided to do this project back in August 2021, I knew I had to get the drum kit to sound as close to the original as possible. I spent over a month working in Superior Drummer 3 and eventually I found the right combination to get it closely matched to what Bob Rock created. You let me know how I did!

Yea Rich, it certainly was a passion project of mine. I have been playing a lot of these songs for 30 years and I felt I should try to play all of them with almost 100% accuracy. It definately was a daunting task and I almost gave up at times, but now I have this huge sense of accomplishment. I appreciate you checking them out! Thanks!

I'm glad you noticed because it took 5 different snares from my libraries, layered together, to get that sound. Just like the actual recordings, I used the Tama Bell Brass as the base layer. When I started designing this kit, I knew the snare, hi-hat, and toms were going to be the parts I needed to focus on the most. Wait till next weeks track... all the snare you could want with Sad But True! Appreciate the comments!

Thanks Jason. I said to my wife yesterday that I feel a real sense of pride that I was able to fully complete this project without to much fuss. It's not often I can play every song on an album with great accuracy as I don't have the skill to play everything on the kit. Luckily as James & Lars has said in many interviews, the songs were more simplistic and they focus on the sound. I came in with the same approach. Appreciate the years of support man! The Black Album is one of my (and probably a lot of peoples) favorite album. I can't count how many times I have listened to this record and just marveled at how well it was tracked, produced, and mixed. I wanted to challenge myself with the production on this project and since the release of these covers, I have been setting the bar just as high on all my newer content. Thanks for all the comments, it means a lot that you took the time to leave them.

Yes! That is going to be my only gripe about doing great sounding drum covers on TH-cam...90% of people listen to them on their phones. 😖 Everytime I watch my favorite drummers on TH-cam, they are heard on my good computer setup.
