- Minnesota's Luke Becker was a senior, a national champion and the #1 ranked wrestler at his weight when he was pinned - pinned! - by Iowa freshman Joe Johnston.
That's what makes wrestling a great sport!
Man, I remember that like it was yesterday. I will never forget that moment of Johnston jumping around for as long as I live. That's what makes the sport so special. To hear the announcers start off joking around that Johnston beating Becker would be a great showing for his season all the way to the pin and the place just being electrified. Awesome.
I wrestled DI in the 90's. The sport has advanced quite a bit since I was in school! The internet has helped to evolve wrestling a ton. I wouldn't be able to hang with these kids today. It's pretty impressive.
WOW!!! Goosebumps all over. That's what freshman dream of!!
Best conditioned athletes in College. Period.
Yea, only swimmers even get close.
Iowa wrestling. It isn't merely about winning: It's about dominating.
This is has got to be one of the best duals of all-time. With this pin and Fulsaas beating 2x champ Damion Hahn with about :05 seconds left. And Iowa was without the services of Mocco but after Fulsaas's win Iowa had a 7 point lead going into HWT and I believe Iowa threw out Freshman Paul Bradley, a little before he hit the starting lineup.
I remember when this happened. I was listening to this on the radio and the announcer went absolutely insane
There was a poster in my Gym that said "People like to make fun of guys who wrestle, but they're smart enuff to not tell these jokes in front of them" haha
Wrestling is so badass!
Great stuff!
Dude Wrestling is the shit. Onc you've done it, everything in life is easy
@omghaxzorzz I'm going into my Freshman year now. This is my second year. Good luck man.
this was an awsome video do the sport its really fun!!!
@omghaxzorzz
Good luck bro. It's an amazing sport. Great to pick as your passion or also as great conditioning and power development for other sports.
@bigbirdgrappler60 and ray louis was a 189 lb state champion in wrestling, thats another very notable example
That was awesome
@Italiangangst3r I know right?! I referee high school wrestling now to keep with the sport, but when i see the kids out there, makes me want to get my singlet and headgear on and go out and join them =D
espnu still shows this during winter championship coverage
@omghaxzorzz i play football and wrestle too, im a wide reciever, what position are you? what weight class?
@omghaxzorzz best feeling in the world, when you hit that takedown just right
Before joining wrestling, I was a walking stick. I was nothing but skin and bones. After joining wrestling, I am now growing a strong six pack, I can do up to 60 push ups (I know still weak, but better than doing only 15), and best of all, I can move my pecs without touching them! :) Wrestling's the best sport out there!
Awesome!
I agree!!
A Senior, A National Champion, A #1 ranked wrestler gets pinned by a Freshman. This video goes to show that anyone can be beat on any given day.
BEST VIDEO EVA!!!! GO HAWKS!!!!
Wrestling is so fun but it's also the hardest sport... The practices.. The longest 6 minutes of ur life on that Matt
Does anyone find the timing of the ref's whistle for the pin a bit late? Becker was pinned but the ref blew the whistle at a point when the guy's one shoulder was up. Is that normal for college?
The official doesn't need to blow the whistle at the moment the pin occurs. Not written to the rulebook. When I officiated, I would see the pin and turn my head away; then blow my whistle and slap the mat. That way the coaches and fans didn't argue the pin.
@@rhigel2269 Cool thanks man.
Do not be intimidated or scared they can sense it trust me.
@omghaxzorzz Way to go and dont ever quit! Conditioning and doing moves correctly makes all the difference. increase your opponents pain and that will decrease his will to win! Make him want to get off the matt! FYI:! Im a VHSL 3X State Champion. Andy Bello
I know your proud and it was a good accomplishment, but it was Virginia. Grow up in the Midwest and you might not have won any…..
what are you talking about they're both solid muscle
@omghaxzorzz Im a freshamn in highschool, my first year of wrestling, and im doing it all for football.. wow.. small world.. i lost my first match but i went 2-2 at my first tournament, i hope you better luck
@omghaxzorzz How'd your season go?
johnson was advancing trying to set up his shot and all becker did was back up all the way to the edge of the mat.
they dont look as cut as i expected
@omghaxzorzz
Good luck!
anything can happen!
@omghaxzorzz thats what I like to hear.
Iowa is an awesome school.
I wrestled for AUU AND High School.
I just got accepted to Iowa.
I go to talk to the Coach next thurday about wrestling next season. Gonna be an awesome time
Bill Smith, the last alive Olympic Gold medalist in wrestling has a bio blog! Check it out!

I miss wrestling, but i don't miss starvation to cut weight...
skip to 4:18 that's where the shitty shot happens then he sticks him
If Becker had shot deeper would this still have happened?
Who cares what matters is it happened
Man if it wasnt for wrestling I would of been a highschool dropout on crack with a kid
Yeah baby
This is the match that lost Matt Anderson the starting spot at 157 lbs for Iowa. Which I still think to this day was a mistake. All of the eggs were put into this one match. Can elaborate more if need to.
Johnson was ranked 8 at this time, so obviously he lost the spot before this ever happened…..
@@wrestlermike22 - Anderson and Johnston had gone back and forth in the starting position. That season Anderson had wins over both Gray Maynard of Michigan State and Shane Roller of Oklahoma State. Iowa was unsure whether they were going to put Anderson or Johnston at 157 lb, come the Big ten Tournament.
This was the match where they decided to go with Johnston.
@@TheNotbadphonedaddy seeing as how he was ranked 8 and just pinned the returning national champion, it sure makes sense to me. Obviously Johnson also had some notable wins before this match, or he wouldn’t have been ranked that high.
@@wrestlermike22 - Ok, I'm wrong. Being told this exact information from an assistant at Iowa & then later on a bus ride by Johnston himself, obviously not reliable sources.
@@TheNotbadphonedaddy what did I say you or the 'Iowa assisstant,' was wrong about?
Other then me saying going with Johnson was the right moce?
that was beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!AAAAAAA!!!
that was fucking hot!
arent they fat for ncaa wrestlers? i thought college wrestlers at that weight were normally 9% bf
hype
i can see the pin call but those stalling calls were TERRIBLE
@MRfatpersonhater football breeds wrestlers wrestling breeds football players they compliment each other brent metcalf was an all district line backer in high school
@McFarlainDarin Try joining a club.
So many of my freinds say wrestling is guys grabbing each other on the ground
I'm so tired of hearing that shit
No collegiate athlete works harder than wrestlers
Pretty tough?? You must not be training correctly. It should make football feel like yoga.
the announcers try to coach to much lol
craddles are embarassing
Yawn. Try that pitch at a UFC event and listen to the laughs fly..
Wrestling IS the hardest sport. But there is no need to defend wresting to ignorant guys. They NEED to put down wrestling because it's their defense mechanism against their own internal conflict. They feel threatened by the feelings wrestling evokes in them. If anything, they deserve our compassion because they are in hell. Wrestling is the oldest sport and I see no evidence of it ever going away. Learn to suffer fools gladly. You'll enjoy much more inner peace.
That was great
